To the campus community,
I write to share the news that, after much reflection and discussion with my wife, Jocelyne, I have decided that I will be retiring as president of Clark University at the end of June 2020. It has been an extraordinary privilege to serve this University for more than 30 years, but I have concluded that this is the right time for us to seek out a new adventure and build another chapter in our lives.
I began at Clark as a professor, then served as an academic administrator, and for the past nine years as president. My time here has reinforced what a unique and wonderful place this is, and it has been my great joy to be a part of this community, which I am confident will continue to prosper in the years ahead.
The progress Clark University has made over the past decade has been because of all of you. It has been an amazing experience to work with talented and inspiring undergraduate and graduate students who, as one of our videos says, have seen the status quo and know that we can do better. Clark has advanced because of our extraordinary faculty, and I am impressed every day with the difference Clark faculty make in the world and in the lives of students. It has truly been an honor to be a professor at Clark and to be a member of the Clark academic community.
Our progress has also come from a great staff, and I thank every one of you for your commitment to our mission and to the goals we have pursued together. And I am grateful for the many alumni, families, and friends of Clark University who remain engaged and give generously to our University. Finally, I would like to express my appreciation to our thoughtful and committed Board of Trustees for their strong leadership over the years and their assistance in ensuring a seamless transition. Thank you all for working with me with such energy, creativity, and compassion.
I know that June 2020 is some eighteen months away, and it is my hope that announcing plans now will give the University and the Board the opportunity to pursue a thoughtful, comprehensive, and inclusive search for Clark’s next president. Clark’s Board of Trustees has already begun to work on the leadership transition, and you will be hearing from them later today.
For now, our leadership remains focused on positioning Clark for ever greater success and expanded impact. Our fundraising campaign, Campaign Clark, has tremendous momentum, and I look forward to continuing to lead this campaign to its successful conclusion in May 2020 and historic highs for the University. We continue to work on many important initiatives across campus, including strengthening college-to-career programming and other support for students, investing in our faculty and staff, and increasing awareness of Clark University across the country and around the world.
Clark has had just nine presidents in its history. Our next (tenth) president will have the opportunity to lead this amazing University and to work with students, faculty, and staff who are unmatched in terms of their passion and commitment to excellence. It will be an exciting time.
