Those that do are called \u201cfirst responders,\u201d and must initiate defensive actions and the notification process. There are five main types of emergencies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Explosions and fires<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Medical emergencies, including splashes of hazardous agents<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spills: chemical spills, biological spills, and mercury spills<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leaking gas cylinders<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Electrical shocks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If an emergency takes place in your area of work that requires the evacuation of the building, leave the building through the nearest exit and use the closest emergency yellow box on campus to contact campus police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"169\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/offices\/environmental-health-and-safety\/www-content\/blogs.dir\/3\/files\/sites\/118\/2019\/08\/emergbox1.jpg\" alt=\"external emergency box view\" class=\"wp-image-39\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/offices\/environmental-health-and-safety\/www-content\/blogs.dir\/3\/files\/sites\/118\/2019\/08\/emergbox1.jpg 169w, https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/offices\/environmental-health-and-safety\/www-content\/blogs.dir\/3\/files\/sites\/118\/2019\/08\/emergbox1-113x150.jpg 113w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 169px) 100vw, 169px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Emergency box<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To use them, open the steel door by turning the handle. Pushing the emergency button located inside the box creates an automatic connection to University Police that cannot be disconnected. Clark\u2019s campus police will automatically know which box has been activated. tabindex=\"0\" aria-labelledby=\"Biological\">\n<p>Biological spills are those than involve potentially hazardous microorganisms or possibly contaminated bodily fluids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cleaning up a biological spill step by step:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Help anybody that might be contaminated by flushing the area splashed. The safety shower, eye wash unit, or the sink can be used for this purpose.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inform persons in the vicinity of the spill. Evacuate all nonessential personnel from the spill area, and post danger signs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Put on protective equipment. This includes a laboratory coat with long sleeves, tear-resistant gloves (wear two pairs), disposable shoe covers, and safety goggles.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cover spill with paper towels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Carefully pour a freshly prepared 1 to 10 dilution of household bleach. First bleach the edges and then the center areas. Avoid splashing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Let the spill soak for a minimum of 20 minutes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After 20 minutes clean the spill with fresh towels soaked in bleach or disinfectant.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bleached materials are disinfected and can go in the trash.&nbsp;<strong>Bleach cannot be autoclaved<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remove gloves one at the time by grasping the wrist end and pulling toward the fingers. To protect yourself, first turn the power off or use a non-conductive item such as a wooden stick to move the person away. Keep the victim lying down with feet elevated until help arrives. For help, call Campus Police at extension 7575, or 1-508-793-7575.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-clarku-child-tab clarku__tab-panel\" role=\"tabpanel\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-labelledby=\"Explosion and Fire Emergencies\">\n<p>Oxygen, heat, and fuel are necessary for the chemical reaction that produces a fire. These three things form what is called the fire triangle. Take one of these three things away and the fire can be extinguished. Explosions are followed by a fire. Use fire emergency procedures in the event of a fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-fuels\">Fuels<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Fuels are classified into the following four categories:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Class A<\/strong><br>Solid combustible materials that are not metals: wood, paper, cloth, trash, plastics.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Class B<\/strong><br>Flammable liquids: gasoline, oil, grease, acetone. Any non-metal in a liquid state, on fire.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Class C<\/strong><br>Electrical: energized electrical equipment. As long as it\u2019s \u201cplugged in,\u201d it would be considered a class C fire.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Class D<\/strong><br>Metals: potassium, sodium, aluminum, magnesium. It takes special extinguishing agents (Metal-X, foam) to fight such a fire.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-use-a-fire-extinguisher\">How to Use a Fire Extinguisher<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To use a fire extinguisher, remember the acronym&nbsp;<strong>PASS<\/strong>, which stands for&nbsp;<strong>P<\/strong>ull,&nbsp;<strong>A<\/strong>im,&nbsp;<strong>S<\/strong>queeze, and&nbsp;<strong>S<\/strong>weep. Always use an extinguisher that is appropriate for the fuel type.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/emilms.fema.gov\/is_0026\/groups\/159.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Here is an excellent resource<\/a>&nbsp;for understanding the proper technique.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-clarku-child-tab clarku__tab-panel\" role=\"tabpanel\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-labelledby=\"Medical Emergencies\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>If the medical emergency requires minor medical treatment, use the materials and instructions provided in your first aid kits.
