Maurelle met Pacheco when he began teaching at Clark and the two immediately started talking about collaborating on a show.

“Materia” highlights the connection between language, materials, and cultures, and diasporic influences are apparent throughout the collection.

Maurelle sourced many of his materials from recycled or discarded items on Clark’s campus. One is called “Pou Sen Suzanne” for Suzanne Simone Baptiste Louverture, who was arrested and tortured by soldiers of Napoleon Bonaparte, who wanted to find her husband’s whereabouts, during the Haitian Revolution. The other is named “Saint Althea” in honor of Althea Gibson, an American tennis player (who Maurelle calls the original GOAT – Greatest of All Time) who in 1956 became the first Black player to win a Grand Slam event.

The thrones contain mirrors given to Maurelle by a Clark colleague, and in the exhibit space, the thrones are placed facing one another.

“When you’re in a hotel or someplace where they have mirrors in an elevator, it does this infinity thing.
