{"id":29526,"date":"2026-09-10T13:57:22","date_gmt":"2026-09-10T17:57:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/?post_type=story&#038;p=29526"},"modified":"2026-09-10T13:57:23","modified_gmt":"2026-09-10T17:57:23","slug":"clark-announces-new-faculty-administrators","status":"publish","type":"story","link":"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/2026\/09\/10\/clark-announces-new-faculty-administrators\/","title":{"rendered":"Clark announces new faculty, administrators"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n<p>Clark University welcomed several new faculty members and administrators this semester, and also announced that several current faculty are taking on administrative roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-undergraduate-scholarship\">Undergraduate scholarship<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/faculty\/profiles\/cyril-ghosh\/\">Cyril Ghosh<\/a>, professor of political science and the Lloyd B. Politsch \u201933 Chair of Law, has been named interim associate dean of undergraduate scholarship, a new part-time position.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this role, Ghosh will provide faculty leadership for prestigious fellowships and scholarships, ClarkFEST, undergraduate research visibility, and the relaunch of the Scholarly Undergraduate Research Journal. He will work across the University to expand students\u2019 access to national and internal competitive opportunities and strengthen how Clark showcases, preserves, and promotes undergraduate scholarly and creative work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ghosh, who received Clark\u2019s 2025 Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award, will continue to teach courses in Constitutional Law and American Government as well as serve as the pre-law advisor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-research-centers\">Research centers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Jennifer Hanselman, associate provost and dean of research, has announced that three faculty members have received interim appointments to lead Clark research centers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/faculty\/profiles\/ken-maclean\/\">Ken MacLean<\/a>, professor of sustainability and social justice, will serve as interim director of the Strassler Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/faculty\/profiles\/eric-demeulenaere\/\">Eric DeMeulenaere<\/a>, professor of education, will serve as the interim director of the Hiatt Center for Urban Education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/faculty\/profiles\/christopher-williams\/\">Christopher Williams<\/a>, professor of geography, will serve as the interim director of the George Perkins Marsh Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-faculty-fellows\">Faculty Fellows<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Dean of the College has appointed a team of faculty fellows supporting strategic initiatives connected to teaching, assessment, learning, and student achievement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Nancy Budwig, Senior Fellow for Teaching, Assessment, and Learning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rosalie Torres Stone, Community-Engaged Learning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mark Jacobs, AI Teaching and Learning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Erin Nerlino, Learning Partners\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jie Park, First-Year Intensives<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Beth Bone, Curriculum and Careers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Alena Esposito, Curriculum and Careers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Esteban Cardemil, Capstone Experiences<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cyril Ghosh, Interim Associate Dean of Undergraduate Scholarship<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mindy Marchand, Honors Director<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don Spratt, Shaich and Penn Scholars<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-school-of-professional-studies\">School of Professional Studies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The School of Professional Studies welcomed two new program directors this summer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jon Zlotnik, MPA-SL \u201923, has assumed the role of program director for the Master of Public Administration \u2013 Senior Leadership Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zlotnik is serving in his 14th year in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, representing North Central Massachusetts, including his hometown of Gardner. First elected in 2012, he focused on economic development, public safety, municipal fiscal health, and access to healthcare and community services, and played a key role in education funding through the Student Opportunity Act. He is not seeking reelection and will end his tenure in the House of Representatives on Jan. 7, 2027.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lilo Altali has assumed the role of program director for the Master of Science in Project Management Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Altali, an award-winning product innovator, author, and educator, has taught in the MSPM program since 2024; he received the Fiat Lux Teaching Excellence Award in 2025 and the Jonas G. Clark Innovation in Teaching Award in 2026. Angel Endowed Professorship in Holocaust Pedagogy and Antisemitism Studies<br>Assistant Professor of History<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ashley Valanzola is a historian of Holocaust Studies and modern France, whose research focuses on memory, women\u2019s and gender history, and museums. Her 2026 book, \u201cWhen She Remembered: Seven Women who Transformed French Holocaust Memory,\u201d showcases an intertwined group of seven influential women, from well-known figures such as Simone Veil to memory activist Sabine Zlatin, who shaped the production of Holocaust memory in France from 1945 to the present. Her upcoming book project, \u201cAfterlife of the Sacred: Holocaust Museums and American Jewish Identity,\u201d considers the transnational impact of Holocaust memory through a cutting-edge, interdisciplinary study of sacred objects in regional Holocaust museums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to coming to the Strassler Center, Valanzola earned fellowships for her research from the French Embassy in the United States and the Cosmos Club in Washington, D.C.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/Huang-wen_Lai_2026-6.avif\" alt=\"Huang-wen Lai\" class=\"wp-image-29533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/Huang-wen_Lai_2026-6.avif 250w, https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/Huang-wen_Lai_2026-6-150x150.avif 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Huang-wen Lai<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/faculty\/profiles\/huang-wen-lai\/\">Huang-wen Lai<\/a><br>Visiting Assistant Professor, Language, Literature &amp; Culture<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Huang-wen Lai is an author and investigator of modern Japanese literature and culture, with a particular focus on colonialism, empire, and cultural identity in early 20th-century Japan. His research examines Japanese colonial literature, cultural production, and representations of identity across imperial and postcolonial contexts. He is currently researching the role of \u201cin-betweenness\u201d in Japanese colonial literature and culture, using both literary and cinematic approaches to better reveal its impact on the lives of those affected.
