Klein Distinguished Professor of Biology at Clark, has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/faculty\/profiles\/david-hibbett\/\">Hibbett<\/a> joins an esteemed group of more than 14,500 leaders in the arts and sciences, business, philanthropy, and public affairs who have been recognized for exceptional contributions in their&nbsp;fields and professions since the Academy\u2019s founding in 1780 by John Adams, John Hancock, and 60 other scholar-patriots. Benjamin Franklin and George Washington were among the first 25 members elected in 1781.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe celebrate the achievement of each new member and the collective breadth and depth of their excellence \u2014 this is a fitting commemoration of the nation\u2019s 250<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;anniversary,\u201d said Laurie Patton, president of the Academy based in Cambridge, Massachusetts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe founding of the nation and the Academy are rooted in the inextricable links between a vibrant democracy, the free pursuit of knowledge, and the expansion of the public good,\u201d Patton added.<br><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<aside class=\"wp-block-group boxout has-gray-200-background-color has-background is-content-justification-left is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-12dd3699 wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-all-about-fungi\">All about fungi<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Biology Professor David Hibbett\u2019s latest book, \u201cThe Complete Fungi:&nbsp;Evolution, Diversity, and Ecology,\u201d an illustrated natural history of fungi, was published this week by Princeton University Press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/press.princeton.edu\/books\/hardcover\/9780691265261\/the-complete-fungi\">Read the book<\/a><\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI feel humbled to be elected to the AAAS. I am also keenly aware that this recognition is not just about me,\u201d Hibbett said. \u201cThroughout my career, I have been supported by inspirational mentors and generous collaborators. I especially want to acknowledge all the post-docs and PhD students who have conducted research and mentored undergraduates in my lab. Without them, my work at Clark&nbsp;would have been impossible.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides Hibbett, this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amacad.org\/new-members-2026\">new members<\/a> from across the U.S. and world \u2014 more than 250 \u2014 include Jack Dangermond, an environmental scientist, GIS technologist, and founder of Esri, a global leader in geographic science and geospatial analytics. Clark has had a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/2024\/10\/30\/geospatial-learning-and-innovation-take-center-stage\/\">longstanding relationship with Esri<\/a>, and Dangermond received an honorary degree from the University in 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Hibbett\u2019s scholarship focuses on evolutionary biology of fungi, particularly mushroom-forming fungi. His research encompasses molecular systematics and evolution, comparative genomics, developmental biology, and paleomycology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He is also interested in principles of biological classification, including rank-free taxonomy and DNA-based species description.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He has published over 150 research articles, has been highly cited, and has received funding from the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<aside class=\"wp-block-group boxout has-gray-200-background-color has-background is-content-justification-left is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-12dd3699 wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-mushroom-moment\">The mushroom moment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The public is fascinated with all things fungal \u2014 from mushroom-themed clothing to the postapocalyptic series <em>The Last of Us<\/em>. But to Biology Professor David Hibbett, fungi are not a fad \u2014 they are a lifelong scholarly pursuit. \u201cMushrooms are a window to a secret world because they are so fantastic,\u201d he says.<br><br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/2024\/02\/01\/the-mushroom-moment\/\">Why mushrooms rule<\/a><\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDavid\u2019s election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences is a well\u2011deserved recognition of his sustained and impactful contributions to the study of fungal evolution and his leadership within the scientific community,\u201d said Deborah Robertson, professor and chair of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/departments\/biology\/\">Biology Department<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt Clark, David has been a wonderful colleague and an inspiring mentor to numerous post-doctoral scholars, graduate students, and undergraduates,\u201d Robertson said. \u201cIn addition, through public lectures, media engagement, and educational outreach, he has also helped bring broader public attention to the remarkable diversity and importance of fungi and mushrooms.&nbsp;It is wonderful to see his career recognized with this honor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to his election to the Academy, Hibbett also has held fellowships with the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University. He also has been a fellow and past president with the Mycological Society of America, and executive vice president of the Society of Systematic Biologists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDavid Hibbett\u2019s election into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences recognizes a career of transformative scientific discovery,\u201d said Jennifer Hanselman, associate provost and dean of research<em>. \u201c<\/em>His work exemplifies the kind of rigorous, curiosity-driven research that advances knowledge while inspiring students and colleagues alike. This is a moment of pride for Clark University.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Induction ceremonies for Hibbett, Dangermond, and the other new members \u2014 who include eminent academic scholars as well as well-known creative artists like actor-director-producer Jodie Foster, actor-dancer-singer Rita Moreno, and best-selling authors Tayari Jones, Barbara Kingsolver, and Colson Whitehead \u2014 will take place in Cambridge this October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 1890, Clark has seen 22 scholars elected to the Academy. Two current faculty now have been honored as members: Hibbett and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/faculty\/profiles\/anthony-bebbington\/\">Anthony Bebbington<\/a>, the Milton P. and Alice C.
