Spencer Dean of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/climate-environment-society\/\">School of Climate, Environment, and Society<\/a>, unpacked some of humanity\u2019s most pressing challenges \u2014 from unfettered climate degradation to the disruptive power of artificial intelligence \u2014 but also shared a dose of optimism, with the appropriate guardrails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/CES_Forum_Friedman.avif\" alt=\"Thomas Friedman at CES Forum\" class=\"wp-image-28191\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/CES_Forum_Friedman.avif 1000w, https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/CES_Forum_Friedman-300x200.avif 300w, https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/CES_Forum_Friedman-768x512.avif 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman at the School of Climate, Environment, and Society Forum.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Following introductory remarks by Clark President David Fithian, Friedman set the tone for the event, describing how his reporting has brought him to the \u201cedge of humanity\u201d (the civil war in Syria, where he witnessed staggering cruelty and inspirational kindness), the \u201cedge of technology\u201d (his research into the global technology economy that led him to write his 2005 bestseller \u201cThe World is Flat\u201d), and the \u201cedge of environment\u201d (observing the need for humans to intentionally and collaboratively adapt to their shifting environments).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignwide is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Climate Forum, presented by the School of Climate, Environment and Society\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cKgzsD0TXDE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The universe-originating \u201cbig bang\u201d of 13.8 billion years ago is being followed by a human-created big bang, Friedman posited, marked by nuclear proliferation that has given us the tools for world destruction, the creation of our own cyberspace \u201cgalaxy,\u201d an earth that is groaning under climate disruption, and the \u201cgenesis moment\u201d in which AI will bestow on humans the godlike ability \u201cto create anything from a molecular level\u201d even if they\u2019re lacking the ethical and moral framework to do it justly and wisely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mother Nature has acted as a buffer for most of our climate excesses, Friedman noted, with the ocean alone absorbing 90 percent of carbon emissions. But that buffering ability is waning, threatening to push us into even more destructive weather patterns. Finding solutions will require the sort of collaborative, interdisciplinary approach centered in the School of Climate, Environment, and Society, which is \u201copening at exactly the right time,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cInterdependence is no longer our choice,\u201d Friedman said. \u201cIt\u2019s our condition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/CES_Forum_Leonard.avif\" alt=\"Lou Leonard\" class=\"wp-image-28194\" style=\"width:400px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/CES_Forum_Leonard.avif 800w, https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/CES_Forum_Leonard-300x200.avif 300w, https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/CES_Forum_Leonard-768x512.avif 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Lou Leonard<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>During the discussion moderated by Friedman, Lubber spoke of the profound influence of the private sector in filling the climate vacuum left by the federal government\u2019s withdrawal from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/process-and-meetings\/the-paris-agreement\">Paris Agreement<\/a>&nbsp;and the administration\u2019s active dismantling of environmental protections. Companies are getting involved on their own terms by pursuing investment opportunities that contribute to the greater climate good while also providing financial gains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Lubber cautioned that there is a \u201cchill\u201d among CEOs who, during the first Trump administration, were eager to publicly share their support for climate action as a priority, but who have shown far greater hesitancy to do so during the second administration. The fear of retaliation, she said, \u201cis beyond troubling.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leonard said he was attracted to the dean\u2019s role at the School of Climate, Environment, and Society because of the potential for higher education to be a catalyst for the creation of effective networks and collaborations, given that the \u201ctop-down\u201d approach is no longer working. \u201cClark is not big enough to be the only answer, but we can show what it looks like to build deep partnerships on the ground,\u201d he said. Surveys have shown that Americans want to engage in finding climate solutions and building healthier communities, Leonard added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOutside of D.C., the climate agenda is full-speed ahead,\u201d Friedman said. He noted that some of the most important changes occur when companies are incentivized by a profit motive to do good things, such as investing in climate-positive action. \u201cGreen is the new red, white, and blue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/CES_Forum_Lubber.avif\" alt=\"Mindy Lubber\" class=\"wp-image-28193\" style=\"width:400px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/CES_Forum_Lubber.avif 800w, https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/CES_Forum_Lubber-300x200.avif 300w, https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/CES_Forum_Lubber-768x512.avif 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Mindy Lubber<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Lubber said more work needs to be done to \u201cconnect the dots\u201d between climate change and its impacts, including last year\u2019s fires in California. For instance, it\u2019s important to emphasize that the Amazon rainforest\u2019s critical role as \u201cthe lungs of the world\u201d is being compromised by deforestation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In climate discourse, it\u2019s more effective to \u201ctell a story rather than make a point,\u201d Friedman said. To that end, Leonard said, Clark\u2019s embracing of an environmental humanities curriculum is giving the University an avenue to meld globally relevant research with the liberal arts to craft compelling storytelling around the climate crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-large-font-size\"><blockquote><p>\u201cInterdependence is no longer our choice. It\u2019s our condition.\u201d<\/p><cite>thomas friedman<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The topic of AI was raised during the question-and-answer session. Lubber addressed the significant sustainability challenges posed by the construction and operation of data centers, which are ravenous consumers of energy and water. Data centers should be using recycled water and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/stories\/2022\/07\/green-steel-emissions-net-zero\/\">green steel<\/a>,\u201d she said. \u201cWater is underappreciated [as a resource],\u201d Lubber said. \u201cIf you don\u2019t have enough water, you can\u2019t build a future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Friedman said the world is at a profound inflection point when it comes to AI. He recently reported on the artificial intelligence company Anthropic\u2019s latest Large Language Model (LLM), which has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/07\/opinion\/anthropic-ai-claude-mythos.html?searchResultPosition=1\">found flaws and loopholes in the software systems<\/a>&nbsp;of some of the largest technology companies. \u201cIt freaked them out,\u201d he said. Leonard called himself a \u201cpragmatic optimist\u201d who is encouraged by the emergence of substantive climate science \u201cthat we can learn from\u201d and that will prompt humanity \u201cto come together to make better decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lubber described herself as an \u201ceternal optimist,\u201d albeit one who is \u201cincredibly nervous\u201d about new technologies with explosive influence, and as well as about unchecked climate decline that will have generational impacts. \u201cWhen I think about climate change, it\u2019s like a bus coming at our kids with ferocious speed, and we\u2019re not jumping in front of it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Harking to his Minnesota upbringing, Friedman struck a hopeful concluding chord. With a smile, he asked, \u201cPessimism.
