{"id":27015,"date":"2026-02-12T12:13:53","date_gmt":"2026-02-12T17:13:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/?post_type=story&#038;p=27015"},"modified":"2026-02-13T11:11:51","modified_gmt":"2026-02-13T16:11:51","slug":"with-ais-assistance-researchers-maximize-clark-tool-to-reveal-how-our-planet-is-changing","status":"publish","type":"story","link":"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/2026\/02\/12\/with-ais-assistance-researchers-maximize-clark-tool-to-reveal-how-our-planet-is-changing\/","title":{"rendered":"With AI\u2019s assistance, researchers maximize Clark tool to reveal how our planet is changing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-working-with-professor-pontius-ph-d-student-antonio-fonseca-aims-to-help-scientists-understand-the-big-picture-in-decades-of-land-cover-data\">Working with Professor Pontius, Ph.D. student Antonio Fonseca aims to help scientists understand the \u2018big picture\u2019 in decades of land-cover data<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Growing up, attending college, and working in Bel\u00e9m, Brazil, Antonio Victor Galv\u00e3o da Fonseca observed firsthand how humans have changed the Amazon\u2019s landscape \u2014 clearing forests, building roads, expanding cropland, extracting minerals, and disrupting rivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a researcher at Imazon&nbsp;(Amazon Institute of People and the Environment), he produced maps and reports for policymakers on deforestation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now a third-year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/departments\/geography\/people\/phd-students\/\">Ph.D. student in geography<\/a> working with Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/faculty\/profiles\/robert-pontius\/\">Robert Gil Pontius Jr.<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/climate-environment-society\/\">Clark\u2019s School of Climate, Environment, and Society<\/a>, Fonseca is using artificial intelligence and cloud computing to improve a free, open-source <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/antoniovfonseca\/summarize-change-components\">research tool available on GitHub<\/a>. If you have a regular computer, a web browser, and a Google account, you can use it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tool relies on land-cover maps derived from satellite imagery of the Earth, captured over four decades. The maps classify the landscape into categories, such as forests, grassland, cropland, and water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Translating Pontius\u2019 mathematical equations into Python code, Fonseca has expanded the tool to work with maps containing over a dozen land-cover categories. The tool allows users to detect land change in maps and datasets from multiple time periods. For instance, it could illuminate how cropland has encroached on forests or how a river has shrunk over several decades or just two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn the past, we didn\u2019t have enough data,\u201d Fonseca says. \u201cNow we have too much data, and the limitation is understanding it. We need tools that help people see what is most important.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-with-clark-ai-innovation-fund-grant-researchers-further-develop-tool-for-worldwide-use\">With Clark AI Innovation Fund grant, researchers further develop tool for worldwide use<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Although the tool deals solely with historical data, it could allow conservation and GIS scientists, policymakers, and regional land-use planners across the world to uncover the patterns which, combined with further research, could help them understand the impacts of climate change over time and make future projections, he explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To support their research using AI to improve the land-cover data tool, Fonseca and Pontius <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/2025\/12\/04\/grants-support-ai-projects-that-enhance-life-on-campus-and-around-the-globe\/\">were awarded a grant<\/a> from the Clark AI Innovation Fund, established with a $50,000 gift from the Yee Family, including Trustee Brian Yee \u201993. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<aside class=\"wp-block-group boxout has-light-green-background-color has-background is-content-justification-left is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-12dd3699 wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-study-climate-change-gis-and-ai\">Study climate change, GIS, and AI<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/climate-environment-society\/academics\/climate-environment-and-society-ba\/\">B.A. in climate, environment, and society<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/programs\/major\/geography-ba\/\">B.A. in geography<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/climate-environment-society\/academics\/climate-and-society-ms\/\">M.S. in climate and society<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/programs\/masters\/geographic-information-science-ms\/\">M.S. in GIS<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/departments\/geography\/graduate-programs\/doctoral-programs\/\">Ph.D. in geography<\/a><\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Their project, they say, ultimately \u201cwill enable Clark professors to incorporate AI into GIS courses, elevating student computing skills previously limited by computing constraints.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cAs a Ph.D. student at Clark, it\u2019s clearer to me that I want to produce something others can actually use \u2014 something that is open, reusable, and accessible.\u201d<\/p><cite>\u2014 Antonio fonseca<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Fonseca\u2019s AI work builds upon a novel methodology that Pontius developed with Thomas Bilintoh, Ph.D. \u201924. Called \u201cTrajectory Analysis,\u201d it helps researchers identify frequently overlooked, yet meaningful, patterns in long-time series of land-cover maps. The team\u2019s innovative methods are described in articles <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/tgis.70136\">published last October<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/tgis.70169\">December<\/a> in the open-access journal <em>Transactions in GIS.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe challenge is not producing more maps \u2014 it\u2019s helping users understand what decades of change actually mean,\u201d Fonseca says. \u201cThis tool can help scientists, map producers, and policymakers make better decisions based on the data.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The researchers applied their methodology to a research project funded by a three-year, $750,000 NASA project led by Pontius and Geography Professor Gustavo Oliveira. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<aside class=\"wp-block-group boxout has-light-green-background-color has-background is-content-justification-left is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-12dd3699 wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-brazil-s-water-tank-is-drying-up\">Why Brazil\u2019s \u2018Water Tank\u2019 is drying up<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/2026\/02\/12\/in-brazils-cerrado-savanna-researchers-study-future-climate-change-scenarios\/\">Learn about the NASA-funded project in the Cerrado<\/a><\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2023, they have been investigating the impacts of large-scale agriculture and irrigation on water tables in the Cerrado savanna of Brazil\u2019s western Bahia state. Deemed a significant carbon sink due to extensive plant root systems, the 789,000-square-mile Cerrado harbors the Earth\u2019s second-largest underground water reservoir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fonseca and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/2024\/10\/09\/steinbrecher-fellow-spends-summer-with-keepers-of-the-pastures\/\">Steinbrecher Fellow Rowan&nbsp;Compton \u201925, M.S. \u201926<\/a>, have been integral to the project, conducting summer field research in the region and conducting GIS analysis, according to Oliveira and Pontius. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur collaboration illustrates the excellent Clark educational approach of using professors\u2019 funded research projects to build research teams that combine bachelors, masters, and doctoral students,\u201d Pontius says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-using-fair-data-principles-to-make-information-accessible-and-reusable\">Using FAIR Data Principles to make information accessible and reusable<br><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Since coming to Clark, Fonseca says, his mindset around research outcomes has changed. In a course taught by Geography Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/faculty\/profiles\/hamed-alemohammad\/\">Hamed Alemohammad<\/a>, director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/geospatial-analytics\/\">Clark Center for Geospatial Analytics<\/a>, he learned about the importance of sharing information and making digital data easily available to humans and machines, practices based on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.go-fair.org\/fair-principles\/\">FAIR (Findable,&nbsp;Accessible,&nbsp;Interoperable, and&nbsp;Reusable) Data Principles<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen I was a researcher in Brazil, most of the studies we published were related to something that affected policy,\u201d he says. \u201cNow, as a Ph.D. student at Clark, it\u2019s clearer to me that I want to produce something others can actually use \u2014 something that is open, reusable, and accessible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To that end, Fonseca will get a chance to share what he has learned in trips to two upcoming conferences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In April, he will travel to Athens, Georgia, to present research on \u201cA Pixel-Level Framework for Map Comparison Through Time with Application to Water Mapping in Plum Island Estuary, MA [Massachusetts]\u201d at the International Association of Landscape Ecology\u2019s annual meeting. He received a NASA award to attend the conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In July, funded by the Clark AI grant, he will present on \u201cRevealing Multi-Class Land Cover Dynamics through Cloud-Based Change Component Analysis\u201d at the Ecological Society of America\u2019s meeting in Salt Lake City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fonseca continues to draw a direct line from his current research interests to his childhood experiences in the Amazon, especially visiting his mother\u2019s village, which has grown exponentially with an influx of city residents who have moved to the countryside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI saw a lot of deforestation and changes in the rivers as I grew up,\u201d he says. \u201cNow, as an adult, I see how different the region is. That experience is part of why I care so much about understanding these changes over time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>Image at top of
