Network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was the message stressed repeatedly during the Jan. 31 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/events\/event\/sophomore-summit\/\">Sophomore Summit<\/a>, where Clark sophomores explored career options, strengthened their resumes, learned about internship opportunities, and got advice on improving their LinkedIn profiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"wp-block-group alignright boxout has-white-color has-clark-red-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-bed3d1e6118d32d668ba24ab496d5103 is-content-justification-left is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-12dd3699 wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-explore-resources-from-the-career-connections-center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/offices\/career-connections-center\/\">Explore resources from the Career Connections Center<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/aside>\n\n\n\n<p>Students split into two groups to take the STRONG Interest Inventory, a career assessment tool that aligns their interests to potential career paths. The sessions were led by Melisa Alves, associate dean and director of career education and experiential learning in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/offices\/career-connections-center\/\">Career Connections Center<\/a>, and Midaly Carrasquillo Delgado, associate director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/schools\/professional-studies\/career-outcomes\/career-and-experiential-learning-services\/\">career education and experiential learning.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students received step-by-step guidance on how to understand their results. Faith Andala \u201928, who majors in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/programs\/major\/political-science-ba\/\">political science<\/a> and minors in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/programs\/major\/marketing-bs\/\">marketing<\/a>, said the assessment was a helpful tool as she figures out her career path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have clarity from the STRONG report and through hearing people talk about their goals and how their goals have changed,\u201d said Andala, who is investigating internships and considering the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/academics\/accelerated-masters\/\">4+1 Accelerated Master\u2019s Degree Program<\/a>. For example, the assessment gave <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/programs\/major\/chemistry-bs\/\">chemistry<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/programs\/major\/computer-science-ba\/\">computer science<\/a> major Dhruvi Moradiya \u201928 an idea for a new career to explore. \u201cMy future career recommendation surprised me,\u201d Moradiya said. \u201cMy top one was accountant, and I have never even thought about accounting, I\u2019ve always been interested in STEM. So maybe I\u2019ll try to look into that now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event included an alumni panel, where Ashley Valois \u201925, MPA \u201926, spoke about transforming from a shy kid to a confident leader as the president of the Undergraduate Student Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI grew a lot as a person in ways that I never expected I would have the opportunity to,\u201d Valois said. \u201cI put a lot of importance on networking and building support. Sharing their internship experiences with the sophomores were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"wp-block-group alignright boxout has-white-color has-light-purple-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-01c3e840be0350d1ad8aa5e9643ede48 is-content-justification-left is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-12dd3699 wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-meridian-stiller-s-story\">Meridian Stiller&#8217;s story<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/Meridian-Stiller-3-scaled-1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"student in field of lavender\" class=\"wp-image-12369\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/Meridian-Stiller-3-scaled-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/Meridian-Stiller-3-scaled-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/Meridian-Stiller-3-scaled-1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/Meridian-Stiller-3-scaled-1-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/Meridian-Stiller-3-scaled-1-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/Meridian-Stiller-3-scaled-1-1200x900.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/2024\/09\/04\/who-is-rescuing-whom\/\">Meridian Stiller \u201926, M.S. \u201927, reflects on their internship at Sanctuary One Care Farm.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/aside>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sarah Al Mozani \u201926, a psychology and sociology major who was a clinical research intern at Brown University<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Luna Pagan \u201927, a biology and geography major who was an animal care intern at the EcoTarium<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Kate Placido \u201926, a political science and Spanish major who interned at El Buen Samaritano<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meridian Stiller \u201926, M.S. \u201927, a geography and international development major who was a farm intern at Sanctuary One and an archival research intern for the Strassler Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies Research<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nehemias Torres Pacheco \u201927, an interactive media and game design major who was a videographer\/marketing assistant intern for New England Low Vision and Blindness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Asked about what they learned during their intern experiences that will be important down the road, Torres Pacheco and Pagan said they gained leadership, communication, and critical-thinking skills. \u201cI had to be able to identify areas to help and become assertive,\u201d Placido said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/programs\/major\/economics-bs\/\">Economics<\/a> major Mikhail Kostin \u201928, who is considering a managerial career, enjoyed a session on optimizing LinkedIn and building a network. \u201cThe session had great advice about following up and being meaningful,\u201d he said. \u201cFostering a human-to-human interaction is important.\u201d He followed this advice by reaching out to his former employers for conversation and coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The session was insightful for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/programs\/major\/biology-bs\/\">biology<\/a> major Giorgi Bakuradze \u201928, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSometimes we might be overly focused on following people on LinkedIn, but you also have to use the relationships with people you already know,\u201d Bakuradze said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A session about applying for an internship highlighted a number of opportunities, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/offices\/career-connections-center\/gain-experience\/funding-opportunities\/\">funding<\/a> for internships, research, and projects. The session also highlighted the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/offices\/career-connections-center\/gain-experience\/academic-internship-program\/\">Academic Internship Program<\/a>, where students can do an internship outside of Clark for academic credit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns alignwide is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493
