{"id":26858,"date":"2026-01-29T16:29:34","date_gmt":"2026-01-29T21:29:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/?post_type=story&#038;p=26858"},"modified":"2026-01-30T12:26:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-30T17:26:11","slug":"of-humans-crocodiles-and-mangroves-faculty-launch-environmental-humanities-program","status":"publish","type":"story","link":"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/2026\/01\/29\/of-humans-crocodiles-and-mangroves-faculty-launch-environmental-humanities-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Of humans, crocodiles, and mangroves: Faculty launch Environmental Humanities program"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n<p>Clark recently celebrated the launch of its new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/programs\/concentration\/environmental-humanities\/\">Environmental Humanities<\/a> program with faculty presentations on their current research, which spans the fields of language, literature, culture, history, sociopolitics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Affiliated with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/climate-environment-society\/\">School of Climate, Environment, and Society<\/a>, the program officially launched last fall with a slate of interdisciplinary classes offered by faculty in the departments of English; History; Language, Literature, and Culture; Sustainability and Social Justice; and Visual and Performing Arts. Christina Gerhardt, the Henry J. Leir Endowed Chair in Foreign Languages and Cultures in Language, Literature, and Culture, and English Professor Stephen Levin are the co-founders and co-directors of Environmental Humanities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Jan. 28, they introduced two of the program\u2019s five affiliated faculty: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/faculty\/profiles\/odile-ferly\/\">Odile Ferly<\/a>, associate professor of language, literature, and culture, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/faculty\/profiles\/nana-kesse\/\">Nana Kesse<\/a>, assistant professor of history (pictured above). They gave a preview of the wide-ranging topics available to students interested in studying and concentrating in the environmental humanities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/Environmental_Humanities_Panel_Jan_2026-20-web-1024x682.avif\" alt=\"Odile Ferly, associate professor of language, literature, and culture\" class=\"wp-image-26873\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/Environmental_Humanities_Panel_Jan_2026-20-web-1024x682.avif 1024w, https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/Environmental_Humanities_Panel_Jan_2026-20-web-300x200.avif 300w, https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/Environmental_Humanities_Panel_Jan_2026-20-web-768x512.avif 768w, https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/Environmental_Humanities_Panel_Jan_2026-20-web-1536x1024.avif 1536w, https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/Environmental_Humanities_Panel_Jan_2026-20-web-1200x800.avif 1200w, https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/Environmental_Humanities_Panel_Jan_2026-20-web.avif 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Odile Ferly, associate professor of language, literature, and culture<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ferly\u2019s study of Caribbean literature centers on mangrove ecosystems, which she described as metaphorically and environmentally significant to the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe mangrove is very important \u2014 it\u2019s a breeding ground, it&#8217;s a hurricane barrier \u2014 but people in the Caribbean don\u2019t really take care of that ecosystem well enough,\u201d Ferly said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI saw the mangrove as a representation of female tradition that was also forgotten and neglected in Caribbean literature for a long time, until the 1990s.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Fellow of the National Endowment for the Humanities, Kesse studies the histories of water and the environment, slavery and the slave trade, as well as the social and cultural history of West Africa.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<aside class=\"wp-block-group boxout has-light-green-background-color has-background is-content-justification-left is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-12dd3699 wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-explore-the-environment\">Explore the environment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/programs\/concentration\/environmental-humanities\/\">Study environmental humanities<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/climate-environment-society\/academics\/climate-environment-and-society-ba\/\">Major in climate, environment, and society<\/a><\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Kesse\u2019s current book project,&nbsp;&#8220;Living with Water: Aqua-culture, Environment, and Slavery in West Africa<em>,<\/em>&#8221;&nbsp;examines the social and environmental history of Nzulezo, the only stilt-house community on water in Ghana and one of the few in Africa dating back to the 17th century. He explores humans\u2019 relationships with water and animals and uses water as a lens for examining African environmental history, which has been shaped by trade, migration, piracy, and slavery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He described a highly organized and complex society, with humans\u2019 domination of this water space, pushing pythons, crocodiles, and other aquatic animals \u201cfarther away to the periphery of ecology\u201d and creating what he described as a \u201csettlement order.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe humans created two overlapping ecological zones,\u201d Kesse said. \u201cThe humans occupied the residential zone, and all other animals occupied the non-residential zone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On March 12, Kesse will further discuss his research as part of a George Perkins Marsh Institute seminar. Akyeampong, the Ellen Gurney Professor of History and Professor of African and African American Studies at Harvard University, will present a lecture on \u201cSpirituality and the Ethics of
