{"id":26186,"date":"2025-12-04T14:38:25","date_gmt":"2025-12-04T19:38:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/?post_type=story&#038;p=26186"},"modified":"2025-12-04T17:24:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-04T22:24:08","slug":"we-have-to-continue-to-bend-the-curve","status":"publish","type":"story","link":"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/2025\/12\/04\/we-have-to-continue-to-bend-the-curve\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;We have to continue to bend the curve&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-clarkies-reflect-on-cop30-successes-and-challenges\">Clarkies reflect on COP30 successes and challenges<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>COP30, the UN Climate Change Conference held in Bel\u00e9m, Brazil, concluded on Nov. 21, but its outcomes continue to resonate in a world grappling with the consequential and accelerating impacts of climate upheaval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the outcomes were an agreement among participating countries to triple adaptation finance for developing countries by 2035, to develop a set of 59 global indicators to help measure progress in building resilience to climate impacts, and to establish a fund to raise $125 billion to compensate countries for preserving standing forests. Little progress was made, however, to create a roadmap to phase out fossil fuels and halt deforestation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"wp-block-group alignright boxout has-clarku-background-color has-green-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-93ec869daff1a6ddb4ff760e4636d842 is-content-justification-left is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-12dd3699 wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"border-style:none;border-width:0px;border-radius:0px\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hands-on-climate-studies\">Hands-on climate studies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/climate-environment-society\/\">Explore the School of Climate, Environment, and Society<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/programs\/major\/geography-ba\/\">Major in geography<\/a><\/p>\n<\/aside>\n\n\n\n<p>At a special panel held Dec. 1 in the Dana Commons Higgins Lounge, three Clark attendees of COP30 shared their impressions of progress and challenges that were illuminated during the two-week conference. Lou Leonard, the D.J.A. Spencer Dean of the School of Climate, Environment, and Society, and geography professors Florencia Sangermano and Abby Frazier, responded to questions about COP30 posed by Zach Rutherford \u201927 of the Clark Environmental Action e-board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leonard, who has attended 10 COPs throughout his career, said this conference was significant in that it focused on practical solutions and tangible action. Frazier, a climatologist whose research is concentrated in the Pacific Islands, asserted that curbing global warming to 2 degrees rather than 1.5 degrees \u201cis not an option\u201d because some islands will be flooded as sea levels rise. \u201cThere\u2019s a common saying: \u20181.5 to stay alive.\u2019\u201d Frazier said. \u201cFrom a Pacific Islands lens, we\u2019re not being ambitious enough. Every tenth of a degree matters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rising temperatures also have a profound impact on biodiversity, food security, human health, and access to clean water, Sangermano added. She has done significant work in the Amazon, and was a member of the ETH BiodivX Team that earned last year\u2019s $250,000 Bonus Prize in the XPRIZE Rainforest Competition. Spencer Dean of the School of Climate, Environment, and Society, and geography professors Florencia Sangermano and Abby Frazier, responded to questions about COP30 posed by Zach Rutherford \u201927 of the Clark Environmental Action e-board.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Leonard remarked that over the last 10 years, \u201cclimate change as a priority has punched through the narrative\u201d with an international process of plans and strategies that are revisited every five years. But he\u2019s discouraged by the resistance to the Paris Agreements, which initially \u201crepresented a moment when every country on earth came together to reach a goal.\u201d Climate change has become a deeply partisan issue, he noted, and the fossil fuel industry and other aspects of society are clinging to an unsustainable status quo (Leonard noted that the United States declined to send representatives to COP30).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rutherford asked perhaps the day\u2019s most pointed question when he motioned to his fellow students in the audience and wondered if they would bear the severest repercussions of unchecked climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frazier responded that Rutherford\u2019s generation will both experience the impacts and be a \u201cmajor player in advancing solutions and figuring out what the future looks like.\u201d At COP30, the delegation from the Solomon Islands included a 12-year-old, who<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>contributed her perspectives to ongoing negotiations. \u201cPeople do want to listen to the younger generation,\u201d Frazier insisted. \u201cIt\u2019s their future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Younger generations will need to help figure out how humanity will adapt in a climate-compromised world, Sangermano said. \u201cWe live in a privileged environment, but outside of it, we\u2019re seeing real issues with access to health care and water. How will we control diseases and account for biodiversity loss? How can we adapt and mitigate?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Combatting the climate-change problem \u201cis not a relay handoff\u201d to a younger generation, Leonard insisted. \u201cThat\u2019s a copout.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is a team sport throughout the process. Universities need to be thinking of themselves not only in their traditional role of training students for their careers, but also in how to do the work of learning collectively in a way that has an impact today.
