Carter Doran \u201925 gets in the game with the Red Sox<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSurreal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s how Carter Doran \u201925 describes working for the Boston Red Sox this spring. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Natick, Massachusetts native, and four-year starter on the Clark baseball team, has been a Sox fan his entire life, with Fenway Park his mecca. So when he secured a position with the team in premium sales\/group hospitality this season \u2014 serving as liaison to groups of fans, giving tours of the ballpark, sharing Red Sox and Fenway history with visitors \u2014 he was beyond thrilled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s like I\u2019ve made it my home now,\u201d he says. \u201cMy whole life, I\u2019ve taken a step back to see things from a different perspective, and now I\u2019m seeing Fenway in ways I\u2019ve never seen it before.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doran, a business management<\/a> major with an economics<\/a> minor, found his Fenway position through the Handshake job portal at Clark, but he didn\u2019t come to the Red Sox without experience. After his sophomore year, he worked for a company that organizes tournaments at a baseball complex in Northborough, Massachusetts, where he not only did operational work but also coached two national all-star teams of youth players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Fenway, he\u2019s led groups of fans on tours atop the \u201cMonster\u201d \u2014 the park\u2019s legendary left-field wall \u2014 and onto the field where they can watch batting practice. He\u2019s discovered hidden corners of the park \u201cthat I didn\u2019t even know existed.\u201d If a group of fans rents a suite at Fenway, he makes sure that their food and beverage needs are taken care of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m taking you onto the Monster; I\u2019m giving you a history lesson. And throughout the game, I\u2019m checking in on you,\u201d he says. \u201cI just enjoy working with people to make their experience better and make a good memory for them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doran, a power-hitting center fielder, recalls being recruited at Clark during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and visiting the campus in the fall of 2020 after students had been sent home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI just walked around with my mom, and we couldn\u2019t go into any of the buildings, see a classroom, or watch a practice,\u201d he recalls. \u201cBut I said, \u2018I\u2019m going here.\u2019\u2009\u201d (Doran would eventually participate in a proper admissions tour of campus and wore his Clark Baseball shirt to signal his allegiance to the school.) He has racked up an impressive career<\/a> at Clark, including posting a .340 batting average last year, with 48 hits, 46 runs, and 29 RBIs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doran hopes to continue his employment with the Red Sox beyond the season, noting that others on the full-time staff started out as seasonal employees. While he\u2019s at it, he\u2019s also pursuing his MBA at Clark through the 4+1 Accelerated Master\u2019s Degree Program<\/a> and does private catering from his home in Natick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With last week\u2019s playoff loss to Wheaton, Clark was knocked out of the NEWMAC tournament, which may have capped Doran\u2019s playing career, but not his involvement with baseball.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGrowing up, my mom always told me that baseball is never going to leave my life, and I can tell it\u2019s not going to,\u201d he says, before adding with a laugh, \u201cShe even said to me, \u2018One day you\u2019re going to work for the Red Sox.\u2019 And I was like, \u2018No, Mom.
