{"id":21029,"date":"2025-04-24T14:45:46","date_gmt":"2025-04-24T18:45:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/?post_type=story&#038;p=21029"},"modified":"2025-04-25T11:26:50","modified_gmt":"2025-04-25T15:26:50","slug":"this-is-a-time-to-stand-up-for-what-is-right","status":"publish","type":"story","link":"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/2025\/04\/24\/this-is-a-time-to-stand-up-for-what-is-right\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018This is a time to stand up for what is right\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clark University is adding its voice to national calls for restraint and adherence to due process as the federal government implements unprecedented policy changes affecting higher education, because, as President David Fithian recently shared, \u201cthis is a time to stand up for what is right.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Wednesday, April 23, Kristen Williams, professor of political science, organized and led a \u201cKnowledge is Power\u201d rally outside Worcester City Hall that drew students, faculty, and staff from Clark and other Worcester colleges, as well as members of the public who protested grant-funding freezes and the revocation of international students\u2019 visas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a story in&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegram.com\/story\/news\/education\/2025\/04\/23\/worcester-college-faculty-stage-knowledge-is-power-anti-trump-rally\/83213104007\/\">The Worcester Telegram &amp; Gazette<\/a><\/em>, speakers at the rally noted that the administration\u2019s actions will curtail essential scientific research and impede the colleges\u2019 critical role as community cores and economic engines for Worcester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On April 22, Clark President David Fithian joined more than 200 college presidents to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aacu.org\/newsroom\/a-call-for-constructive-engagement\">sign a letter&nbsp;<\/a>organized through the American Association of Colleges and Universities speaking out against &#8220;government intrusion&#8221; into higher education.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs leaders of America\u2019s colleges, universities, and scholarly societies, we speak with one voice against the unprecedented government overreach and political interference now endangering American higher education,\u201d the letter states. \u201cWe are open to constructive reform and do not oppose legitimate government oversight. However, we must oppose undue government intrusion in the lives of those who learn, live, and work on our campuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAmerican institutions of higher learning have in common the essential freedom to determine, on academic grounds, whom to admit and what is taught, how, and by whom,\u201d the letter continues. \u201cOur colleges and universities share a commitment to serve as centers of open inquiry where, in their pursuit of truth, faculty, students, and staff are free to exchange ideas and opinions across a full range of viewpoints without fear of retribution, censorship, or deportation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The federal government recently terminated the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVIS) status of 13 international students at Clark. Two weeks ago, the University joined 85 higher education institutions and organizations across the country to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/2025\/04\/10\/clark-signs-amicus-brief-in-support-of-international-students\/\">sign an amicus brief<\/a>&nbsp;in&nbsp;<em>AAUP v. Rubio<\/em>, supporting a motion to enjoin the federal government\u2019s policy of revoking the visas of and arresting, detaining, and deporting noncitizen students and faculty exercising their free speech and association rights.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.presidentsalliance.org%2Fpress%2Feighty-six-institutions-and-associations-lead-the-presidents-alliances-filing-of-amicus-brief-challenging-visa-revocations-and-detentions%2F&amp;data=05%7C02%7CJKeogh%40clarku.edu%7C8c0c447594bf444a136908dd7845d7c5%7Cb5b2263d68aa453eb972aa1421410f80%7C0%7C0%7C638798964011619834%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=VOUNO5%2Fqb12CtM0wtMc5fcbwMvUJQHuPLYk8Fms6r%2FA%3D&amp;reserved=0\">According to the Presidents\u2019 Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration<\/a>, the injunction is an essential stop gap pending resolution of a legal challenge filed March 25 by the American Association of
