(Photo &copy; Karen Frey)\n<p><em>No fireworks, perhaps, but the midnight sun should brighten the season for arctic scientist Karen Frey and three of her students as they conduct environmental research in Siberia from June 26 to July 26.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Frey, assistant professor in the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www2.clarku.edu\/departments\/geography\/\">Graduate School of Geography<\/a>&nbsp;at Clark University, has been a co-principal investigator of&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thepolarisproject.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Polaris Project<\/a>: Rising Stars in the Arctic and Amplifying the Impact since its beginning in 2008. The innovative research and education program is funded by the National Science Foundation&#8217;s (NSF) Office of Polar Programs and Arctic Natural Sciences Program.<\/p>\n<p>The Polaris Project trains future leaders in arctic research and informs the public about the Arctic and global climate change. During the annual month-long field expedition to the Northeast Science Station in Cherskiy, East Siberia, faculty, graduate and undergraduate students conduct cutting-edge investigations that advance scientific understanding of the changing Arctic.<\/p>\n<div class=\"infobox\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_3786\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3786\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3786\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/broderick-150x150-2.jpg\" alt=\"Dylan Broderick\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3786\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dylan Broderick &#8217;12<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The 2012 Polaris Project participants from Clark, who are among only 16 selected from around the world, include Ph.D. student&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:dmayer@clarku.edu\">David Mayer<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:dbroderick@clarku.edu\">Dylan Broderick<\/a>&nbsp;&#8217;12, and Samuel Berman &#8217;14.<\/p>\n<p>This is Broderick&#8217;s second field season in Siberia. She is pursuing a master&#8217;s degree at Clark in&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www2.clarku.edu\/departments\/geography\/maprograms\/index.cfm\">Geographic Information Science<\/a>, and will continue her work in using remote sensing and GIS to identify patterns and trends of carbon storage across the landscape.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I feel so fortunate to have the chance to continue my research from last year,&#8221; Broderick said. &#8220;Something that really struck me from my previous experience was not only the remote location and the fieldwork, but also the broad range of interests and infectious enthusiasm among the students, professors, and scientists.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"infobox\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_3787\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3787\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3787\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/mayer-13-150x150-2.jpg\" alt=\"David Mayer\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3787\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ph.D. student David Mayer<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Ph.D. student Mayer holds a master&#8217;s degree in Earth and Planetary Science, from Washington University in St. Louis. His research utilizes satellite remote sensing coupled with field-based studies to monitor polar environmental change.<\/p>\n<p>Berman, a junior this fall, majors in&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www2.clarku.edu\/departments\/es\/\">Environmental Science<\/a>, with a concentration in&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www2.clarku.edu\/departments\/es\/ess\/\">Earth Systems Science<\/a>. In his&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thepolarisproject.org\/saying-final-goodbyes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first journal post<\/a>, he writes: &#8220;Our month stay overseas will no doubt be the highlight of many of our lives and undergraduate careers. This truly will be an experience that will open up new doors and&nbsp;change our view of what it means to be a field researcher. &hellip; This trip is an opportunity for us to use what we have spent years studying and to learn skills and techniques that we otherwise would not learn until graduate school.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"infobox\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_3788\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3788\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3788\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/berman2-150x150-2.jpg\" alt=\"Samuel Berman\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3788\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Samuel Berman &#8217;14<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>To date, The Polaris Project has conducted the &#8220;Rising Stars&#8221; field program each summer since 2008.
