The Mosakowski Institute for Public Enterprise<\/a> at Clark University will host “Holding Government Accountable,” a lecture by Massachusetts State Auditor Suzanne Bump<\/a>, on Wednesday, Oct. 26, at 11 a.m. in the Lurie Conference Room of Higgins University Center, 950 Main St. The event, which is co-sponsored by the Political Science department and the Law and Society program, is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n Massachusetts State Auditor Suzanne Bump\n

“Everybody believes that government should be efficient, honest, and transparent,” said Mosakowski Institute Director Jim Gomes<\/a>. “But achieving these goals is a challenge, especially for a $40 billion enterprise like the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Auditor Bump will be sharing her experiences as the state’s chief fiscal watchdog.”<\/p>\n

Bump, the 25^{th<\/sup> auditor of the Commonwealth and the first woman elected to the post, will speak about her office’s work to ensure that every dollar given to state government is well spent and that state agencies and contractors follow the rules when spending public funds.<\/p>\n}

After taking office in 2011, Bump sought to modernize and professionalize her office by instituting training programs, encouraging employees to earn professional certifications, and developing a career ladder program to support employee professional development. Through these improvements, Auditor Bump led her office in just three years from failing an outside review from the National State Auditor’s Association (NSAA) to receiving its highest rating in 2014.<\/p>\n

Prior to her election, Bump served in former Gov. Deval Patrick’s cabinet as Secretary of Labor and Workforce Development and had represented the Town of Braintree for eight years in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. In the private sector, she worked as a business advocate, legal counsel, and has sat on the boards of numerous nonprofit organizations including the South Shore Chamber of Commerce and St. Francis House.<\/p>\n
