Now, she spends her time thinking about ice, specifically how climate change impacts sea-ice extent in the western Arctic Ocean.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_416\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-416\" style=\"width: 288px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-416 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/santiago-map-288x300-2.jpg\" alt=\"Santiago's map\" width=\"288\" height=\"300\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-416\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The study area for Santiago&#8217;s project is in the Bering, Chukchi and western Beaufort seas. The dark blue markings indicate the sampling stations for the NSF Arctic Observing Network Distributed Biological Observatory program.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Santiago is researching the effects of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nsidc.org\/cryosphere\/quickfacts\/seaice.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sea-ice extent<\/a>, or how much of a given space is considered ice covered, on the biology and biogeochemistry in the ocean water column in the Bering, Chukchi and western Beaufort seas of the Pacific Arctic Region along Alaska&rsquo;s coast. She&rsquo;s looking at how a material called colored or chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) distribution is impacting sea-ice extent.<\/p>\n<p>In the Arctic Ocean, dissolved organic matter results from the decay of phytoplankton, or microscopic marine plants, by photosynthesis on ocean surface waters or when land-derived organic matter is transported by rivers to coastal areas. CDOM, the fraction of dissolved organic matter you can see in natural waters, absorbs light and affects heating and light distribution in the ocean water column, the conceptual column of water from surface to floor. For example,&nbsp;NASA compares&nbsp;it visually to when color and tea leaves leach from a teabag into hot water. Light absorption converts degrading dissolved organic matter into inorganic material. It then releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>Santiago&rsquo;s research on sea-ice extent and CDOM will help address climate uncertainties in the Pacific Arctic Region and future responses to the environment. Santiago, who uses field measurements and satellite remote sensing imagery to study CDOM distribution, says changes in sea-ice extent can &ldquo;affect light availability, primary production and phytoplankton growth and decay while impacting CDOM production in ocean surface waters.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;If current climate trends continue, later-summer sea ice is expected to disappear in the next decades in the Pacific Arctic Region,&rdquo; she says. &ldquo;This can have profound consequences on the biology and biogeochemistry of marine ecosystems.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_414\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-414\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-414 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/santiago-icebreaker-300x247-2.jpg\" alt=\"Santiago researching picture\" width=\"300\" height=\"247\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-414\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Santiago conducting fieldwork in the Arctic.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Santiago, who came to Clark to study with Professor&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.clarku.edu\/faculty\/facultybio.cfm?id=670\">Karen Frey<\/a>, completed a bachelor&rsquo;s degree in biology in 2008 and a master&rsquo;s degree in geography in 2011 from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.umass.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Massachusetts, Amherst<\/a>. While here, she was able to conduct more extensive fieldwork last summer aboard the&nbsp;Canadian icebreaker&nbsp;<em>Sir Wilfrid Laurier<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>After she earns her doctorate in 2018, Santiago plans to complete post-doctoral study and secure a tenure-track position at a four-year research university &mdash; aspirations she attributes to studying at Clark.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;My education here has helped prepare me for my next endeavor, and to continue to study sea-ice extent and the biogeochemistry of marine ecosystems,&rdquo; she
