Hafez&#8217;s art depicts the war-torn landscapes of contemporary Syria.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;While it is proverbial to say that facts don&rsquo;t lie, the interpretation of evidence can be messy and even contradictory,&rdquo; says <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.clarku.edu\/faculty\/facultybio.cfm?id=609\">Meredith Neuman<\/a>, director of the Higgins School. &ldquo;Differences in perception and experience, knowledge and instinct are inherently human and feel even more perplexing in the face of information overload.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Symposium events will examine how we navigate unfamiliar and uncomfortable topics, and how we balance information from experts with criticism of knowledge that favors existing power structures, she says.<\/p>\n<p>The symposium kicks off at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 12, with a community conversation facilitated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.clarku.edu\/faculty\/facultybio.cfm?id=645\">Wes DeMarco<\/a>, professor of philosophy, about knowledge and the pursuit of questions &mdash; specifically who, what, when, where, why, and how? From childhood, these questions construct the foundation of knowledge gathering and problem-solving; seemingly basic, but often overlooked, they are essential to progressing from inquiry to answer, from simple thought to complex networks of understanding.<\/p>\n<p>Other lectures and events this fall include, but are not limited to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&ldquo;From Crime Scene to Courtroom&rdquo; <\/strong>(Sept. 27), a lecture in which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pg\/Dr-Elizabeth-Murray-Forensic-Anthropologist-1430341603878257\/about\/\"> Elizabeth Murray<\/a>, one of only 80 forensic anthropologists in the United States certified by the American Board of Forensic Anthropology, will examine the role of evidence in the quest for justice &mdash; and how critical errors in human judgment have led to wrongful convictions of the innocent.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mohamadhafez.com\/\">Mohamad Hafez<\/a>, an up-and-coming Syrian artist and architect, will reproduce the war-torn landscapes of contemporary Syria in a poignant and powerful installation, <strong>&ldquo;Unsettled Nostalgia&rdquo;<\/strong>&nbsp;(Oct. 2), which reveals the entangled relationships between home and homeland, refuge and security, and art and politics.<\/li>\n<li>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6308\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6308\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6308 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/Nichols-Tom-150x150-2.jpeg\" alt=\"Tom-Nichols\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6308\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tom Nichols<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/usnwc.edu\/Faculty-and-Departments\/Directory\/Thomas-M-Nichols\">Tom Nichols<\/a>, professor of national security affairs at the U.S. Naval War College, will present <strong>&ldquo;The Death of Expertise&rdquo;<\/strong>&nbsp;(Oct. 15) about the wave of ill-informed and angry citizenship that distrusts intellectual achievement and expertise, and will ask, &ldquo;How do we defend against this threat to our well-being and to the future of our democratic institutions?&rdquo;<\/li>\n<li>A lecture, <strong>&ldquo;Decolonizing the Middle Ages&rdquo; <\/strong>(Oct. 3), will look at the recent white supremacist appropriation of medieval symbols and imagery. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brandeis.edu\/english\/faculty\/kim.html\">Dorothy Kim<\/a> of Brandeis University will explore the loaded fantasies and erroneous ideas about the medieval period, and reveal the complexities of European societies at the dawn of a global age.<\/li>\n<li>Pulitzer Prize winner and legal scholar <a href=\"https:\/\/hls.harvard.edu\/faculty\/directory\/10329\/Gordon-Reed\">Annette Gordon-Reed<\/a> will explore the history of <strong>&ldquo;Jefferson and the Hemingses of Monticello&rdquo;<\/strong>&nbsp;(Nov. 1), and reflect on this American family&rsquo;s implications for genealogical inquiry, scholarly method, and public history, in a talk that is offered as part of Clark&rsquo;s African American Intellectual Culture Series.<\/li>\n<li>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6309\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6309\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6309\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/Brooks-Anthony-300x169-2.jpeg\" alt=\"Anthony-Brooks-Higgins-Symposium\" width=\"200\" height=\"113\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6309\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Anthony Brooks<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Veteran local reporter, producer, and radio host <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wbur.org\/inside\/staff\/anthony-brooks\/3\">Anthony Brooks<\/a> will present <strong>&ldquo;A Free Press in Turbulent Times&rdquo; <\/strong>(Nov. 13), and offer insights on recent attacks on the media, the state of the press today, and the stakes for all of us as consumers of the news.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And continuing the Higgins School&#8217;s popular Halloween tradition, Theatre Arts Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.clarku.edu\/faculty\/facultybio.cfm?id=453\">Gino Dilorio<\/a>, English Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.clarku.edu\/faculty\/facultybio.cfm?id=401\">Jay Elliott<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.clarku.edu\/departments\/writingatclark\/staff.cfm\">Jennifer Plante<\/a>, director of the Writing Center will read scary tales of the uncanny, the unknowable, and the unfathomable in <strong>&ldquo;<\/strong><strong>Shadows of a Doubt&rdquo;<\/strong>&nbsp;(Oct. 24).<\/p>\n<p>This symposium is co-sponsored by the Higgins School of Humanities and Difficult Dialogues.
