Biologist commended for distinguished contributions to study of fungi<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Biology Professor David S. Hibbett<\/a> has been named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science<\/a> (AAAS) and is included on the Highly Cited Researchers 2018 list from Clarivate Analytics<\/a>. Both honors were bestowed on him by his peers.<\/p>\n

This year, the AAAS recognized 416 of its members with an elected lifetime Fellowship in honor of their scientifically or socially distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications.<\/p>\n

Professor Hibbett was commended for his “distinguished contributions to mycology, particularly using phylogenetic approaches to understand the evolution of fungal morphology and ecological strategies.”<\/p>\n

Hibbett is the seventh Clark faculty member<\/a> to be named an AAAS Fellow since 1958. The last Clark scholar to receive this honor was Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Davis Baird<\/a> in 2010.<\/p>\n

Hibbett also is included in Clarivate Analytics’ Highly Cited Researchers 2018<\/a>. The list “recognizes world-class researchers selected for their exceptional research performance, demonstrated by production of multiple highly cited papers that rank in the top 1 percent by citations for field and year in Web of Science<\/a>.”<\/p>\n

The Highly Cited Researchers list identifies scientists and social scientists who have demonstrated significant influence through publication of multiple highly cited papers during the last decade. Researchers are selected for their exceptional performance in one or more of 21 fields (those used in Clarivate Analytics’ Essential Science Indicators<\/a>) or across several fields. Hibbett is among 2,000 researchers recognized as having exceptional cross-field performance.<\/p>\n

“Both of these honors mean a lot to me,” Hibbett says. “It is humbling to be elected as an AAAS Fellow and to be included in the Highly Cited Researchers list. I am deeply grateful to the colleagues who supported my nomination for the AAAS Fellowship, and gratified to think that some of my work may have been useful to other scientists.”<\/p>\n

Hibbett, who has been at Clark since 1999, is considered one of today’s leading researchers in the analysis of fungal relationships through DNA analysis. He concentrates his lab work in evolutionary biology<\/a> and ecology of fungi<\/a>. He is a Fellow and past president of the Mycological Society of America<\/a>, and served as a Grass Fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University<\/a>. He recently collaborated with the Worcester EcoTarium to create a permanent “Fungal Tree of Life” exhibit<\/a> (which includes artwork by Clark alumna Amy Yeager ’17) and is working on a book on mushroom evolution for a general audience. The new AAAS Fellows will be formally announced in the Nov. 29 issue of the journal Science.<\/em> They will be presented with their official honors during the February 2019 AAAS Annual Meeting<\/a> in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n

The American Association for the Advancement of Science is the world’s largest general scientific society. It publishes the journal Science<\/a><\/em> as well as Science Translational Medicine<\/em>; Science Signaling<\/em>; a digital, open-access journal, Science Advances<\/em>; Science Immunology<\/em>; and Science Robotics<\/em>.
