Trump&nbsp;and Hillary Clinton were the first ever male-female major-party candidates competing for the presidency, but as President Trump campaigns for reelection against a Democratic field that includes several women, there is more to learn about what 2016&rsquo;s votes mean for this year&rsquo;s balloting than just that personal dynamic.<\/p>\n<p>According to &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/global.oup.com\/academic\/product\/trumping-politics-as-usual-9780190065829?cc=us&amp;lang=en&amp;\">Trumping Politics as Usual: Masculinity, Misogyny, and the 2016 Elections<\/a>,&rdquo; a recently released book by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/academics\/undergraduate\/programs\/majors-minors\/political-science\/\">Political Science<\/a> Professors&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.clarku.edu\/faculty\/facultybio.cfm?id=467\">Robert Boatright<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.clarku.edu\/faculty\/facultybio.cfm?id=7\">Valerie Sperling<\/a>, gender debates were critical to how Democrats and Republicans campaigned for the U.S. House and Senate not only because a man and a woman were competing for the nation&rsquo;s highest office, but also because of how Trump&rsquo;s rhetoric affected judgments about those debates at every political level.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-11148\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/Trumping-Politics-Book-Cover-1.jpg\" alt=\"Trumping Politics as Usual book cover\" width=\"300\" height=\"451\">&ldquo;In many elections,&rdquo; Professor Sperling said, &ldquo;candidates frame their appeals in gendered ways &mdash; they compete, for instance, over who is more &lsquo;masculine.&rsquo; This is the case for male and female candidates alike.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Professor Boatright added, &ldquo;In 2016, the stark choice between the first major-party female candidate and a man who exhibited a persistent pattern of misogyny made the use of gender more prominent than in any previous election in the United States.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Trumping Politics as Usual&rdquo; also explores how Trump and other world leaders &mdash; including Russian President Vladimir Putin and President of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte &mdash; use masculinity in their establishment of political authority.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ou.edu\/carlalbertcenter\/research\/faculty-publications\/rosenthal-research\">Cindy Simon Rosenthal<\/a>, presidential professor emerita and director of the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ou.edu\/carlalbertcenter\">Carl Albert Congressional Research and Studies Center<\/a> at the University of Oklahoma, wrote, &ldquo;Boatright and Sperling have assembled a richly detailed and highly readable account of the impact of the Trump candidacy and his open misogyny on congressional races in 2016. Their careful analysis offers a myriad of new questions and lessons as the 2020 presidential season approaches.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Along with an in-depth examination of the 2016 presidential election and its aftermath, &ldquo;Trumping Politics as Usual&rdquo; explores the consequences of the 2016 presidential campaign for congressional primary election turnout, interest-group spending, and advertising strategy. The book also considers how the congressional campaigns of 2018 were shaped by the 2016 presidential race.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Sperling&rsquo;s research interests lie mainly at the intersection of gender studies and Russian politics. Her book, &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/global.oup.com\/academic\/product\/sex-politics-and-putin-9780199324354?facet_narrowbybinding_facet=Ebook&amp;lang=en&amp;cc=us\">Sex, Politics, and Putin: Political Legitimacy in Russia<\/a>,&rdquo; (Oxford University Press, 2014) won the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/aseees.org\/\">Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aseees.org\/programs\/aseees-prizes\/davis-center-book-prize-political-and-social-studies\">Davis Center Book Prize<\/a> for the &ldquo;outstanding monograph on Russia, Eurasia, or Eastern Europe in anthropology, political science, sociology or geography.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Professor Boatright teaches courses on and researches American political behavior, political parties, campaigns and elections, interest groups, political participation, and political theory. He is co-editor of &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.routledge.com\/A-Crisis-of-Civility-Political-Discourse-and-Its-Discontents-1st-Edition\/Boatright-Shaffer-Sobieraj-Goldthwaite-Young\/p\/book\/9781138484429\">A Crisis of Civility? Political Discourse and Its Discontents<\/a>&rdquo; (Routledge, 2019). His book &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/article\/whats-getting-primaried-clark-university-profs-new-book-explains\">Getting Primaried: The Changing Politics of Congressional Primary Challenges<\/a>&rdquo; (University of Michigan Press) was named one of &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaljournal.com\/s\/627920\/best-political-books-we-read-2013\">The Best Political Science Books We Read in 2013<\/a>&rdquo; by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaljournal.com\/dashboard\">National Journal<\/a>. He is the director of research for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nicd.arizona.edu\/research\">National Institute of Civil
