{"id":13594,"date":"2021-12-21T19:56:12","date_gmt":"2021-12-21T19:56:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.golive.clarku.edu\/news\/2021\/12\/21\/students-work-to-amplify-plight-of-penobscot-tribe-in-colonial-massachusetts\/"},"modified":"2025-05-19T09:32:39","modified_gmt":"2025-05-19T13:32:39","slug":"clark-students-guide-amplifies-themes-in-new-documentary-about-plight-of-indigenous-people","status":"publish","type":"story","link":"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/2021\/12\/21\/clark-students-guide-amplifies-themes-in-new-documentary-about-plight-of-indigenous-people\/","title":{"rendered":"Students work to amplify plight of Penobscot Tribe in colonial Massachusetts"},"content":{"rendered":"\n            \n            <p class=\"intro news-subhead\">Clark seniors create guide to themes in new documentary about 1755 bounty on Indigenous people<\/p>\n            <p><html><body><\/p>\n Lamisa Muksitu &rsquo;22 (left) and Penelope Kogan &rsquo;22\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">In 1755, Spencer Phips, lieutenant governor of the Massachusetts Bay colony, issued a proclamation that declared the Penobscot people enemies, rebels, and traitors to King George II, and called on all &ldquo;his Majesty&rsquo;s Subjects of this Province to Embrace all opportunities of pursuing, captivating, killing, and Destroying all and every of the aforesaid Indians.&rdquo; The colonial government promised to pay a bounty for every Penobscot captured (or killed) and brought to Boston.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">During an internship with the Boston-based nonprofit&nbsp;<\/span><span lang=\"EN\"><a title=\"https:\/\/upstanderproject.org\/\" href=\"https:\/\/upstanderproject.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"Upstander Project\">Upstander Project<\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN\">,&nbsp;Lamisa Muksitu &lsquo;22 and Penelope Kogan &rsquo;22&nbsp;<\/span>&mdash; both of whom concentrate in&nbsp;<a title=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/academics\/undergraduate\/programs\/concentration\/holocaust-and-genocide-studies\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/academics\/undergraduate\/programs\/concentration\/holocaust-and-genocide-studies\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"Holocaust and genocide studies\">Holocaust and genocide studies<\/a>&nbsp;&mdash; helped prepare a teacher&rsquo;s guide to accompany &ldquo;<a title=\"https:\/\/upstanderproject.org\/bounty\" href=\"https:\/\/upstanderproject.org\/bounty\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"Bounty\">Bounty<\/a>,&rdquo; a short documentary film that focuses on the plight of the Penobscot people after the government offered a reward for their scalps or bodies.<\/p>\n<p>Under the joint mentorship of <a href=\"https:\/\/upstanderproject.org\/team\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"Mishy Lesser\">Mishy Lesser<\/a>, learning director of the Upstander Project, and Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.clarku.edu\/faculty\/facultybio.cfm?id=162\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"Shelly Tenenbaum\">Shelly Tenenbaum<\/a>, coordinator of undergraduate activities for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/centers\/holocaust-and-genocide-studies\/\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"Strassler Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies\">Strassler Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies<\/a>, Muksitu and Kogan researched and edited supporting documents to help create a guide that educators, students, and the general public can use to deepen their understanding of the issues raised in the film.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16946\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16946\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16946\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2021-Phips-proclamation-Upstander-internships-1.jpg\" alt=\"The 1755 proclamation by Spencer Phips, lieutenant governor of the Massachusetts Bay colony, paid settlers handsomely to murder Penobscot people.\" width=\"350\" height=\"445\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16946\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The 1755 proclamation by Spencer Phips, lieutenant governor of the Massachusetts Bay colony, paid settlers handsomely to murder Penobscot people.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;Lamisa and Penelope were exceptionally motivated to assist with this task,&rdquo; wrote Lesser. &ldquo;They watched, and then we discussed, a rough cut of &lsquo;Bounty.<em>&rsquo;&nbsp;<\/em>Together, we unpacked the message of the film in light of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/genocideprevention\/documents\/atrocity-crimes\/Doc.1_Convention%20on%20the%20Prevention%20and%20Punishment%20of%20the%20Crime%20of%20Genocide.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"U.N. Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide\">U.N. Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide<\/a>, and we talked about different ways this material could be taught to a variety of grade levels.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Muksitu said her work on &ldquo;Bounty&rdquo; strengthened her desire to pursue research as a future career path, the field &ldquo;still has a long way to go in terms of inclusivity and accessibility.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;While I have a deep attachment to academia, I believe that academia must be reconstructed to make well-deserved space for indigenous people and people of color,&rdquo; she wrote. Muksitu also said projects like the one she worked on &ldquo;serve as important first steps.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>For Kogan, who is majoring in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/academics\/undergraduate\/programs\/doctorate\/psychology\/\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/academics\/undergraduate\/programs\/doctorate\/psychology\/\">https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/academics\/undergraduate\/programs\/doctorate\/psychology\/<\/a> with a minor in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/academics\/undergraduate\/programs\/majors-minors\/international-development-and-social-change\/\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"international development and social change\">international development and social change<\/a>, working on the project reemphasized the importance of historical context when studying areas of conflict.<\/p>\n<p>Kogan wrote that her internship at the Upstander Project not only taught her &ldquo;how to dig deep within a history&rdquo; but also &ldquo;to look for stories of resistance &mdash; even into the present day.&rdquo; She plans to pursue her master&rsquo;s in international development and social change after earning her bachelor&#8217;s in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/academics\/undergraduate\/programs\/majors-minors\/political-science\/\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"political science\">political science<\/a>, with a minor in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/academics\/undergraduate\/programs\/majors-minors\/english\/\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"English\">English<\/a>, in the spring.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I am impressed by&nbsp;Lamisa&nbsp;and Penelope&#8217;s emphasis on unlearning and relearning Native American history,&rdquo; wrote Professor Tenenbaum. &ldquo;Because&nbsp;of their efforts, students will benefit from this powerful teaching tool by gaining a deeper understanding of genocide perpetrated against indigenous peoples.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Muksitu and Kogan&#8217;s internships were funded through CHGS by the&nbsp;Doris Tager Summer Stipend Fund and the Ina R. and Haskell R. Gordon Fund, respectively. The students presented their research at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/academic-spree-day-and-fall-fest\/\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"Fall Fest\">Fall Fest<\/a>, and joined Lesser on November 10 for &#8220;Indian Scalps for Money: A Hidden History of Colonial Times,&#8221; a presentation that was part of the HGS Especially for Students Lecture Series and co-sponsored by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/academics\/undergraduate\/programs\/concentration\/comparative-race-and-ethnic-studies\/\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"Comparative Race and Ethnic Studies program\">Comparative Race and Ethnic Studies program<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/departments\/education\/\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"Education Department\">Education Department<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/offices\/diversity-inclusion\/\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"Office of Diversity and Inclusion\">Office of Diversity and
