How to teach about slavery amid efforts to suppress history<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n<\/iframe>\n From left: Claremont Academy teacher (and Clark alumna) Helen Ward, Claremont junior Ailany Rivas, University Park Campus School senior Fernando Matos, and Clark professor Raphael Rogers outside the Claremont Academy with some of the books they used in their research on how slavery is represented in schools and children’s book publishing.\nClark <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/departments\/education\/\" aria-label=\"education major\">education<\/a> Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.clarku.edu\/faculty\/facultybio.cfm?id=931\" aria-label=\"Raphael Rogers bio\">Raphael Rogers<\/a> teaches aspiring teachers. That means he helps Clark students learn how to discuss difficult topics in the classroom, including racism and slavery. This work comes as people across the country — from Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to parents in Massachusetts towns — challenge whether uncomfortable parts of American history belong in schools.<\/p>\n“If you look at the discourse around why teachers shouldn’t focus on these issues in classrooms, there’s a lot of talk about indoctrination,” Rogers says. “That type of discourse is out there, and it’s used often.
