What if a robot could help?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote alignright hang is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe spent a lot of time testing possible issues, configuring the software, and learning how it works.\u201d<\/p>\n<cite>-Adrian Ramirez \u201925<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s a question computer science Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/faculty\/profiles\/gary-holness\/\" aria-label=\"professor bio\">Gary Holness<\/a> and students are tackling in Clark\u2019s robotics lab, the Laboratory for Intelligent Perceptual Systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the summer, Holness, Adrian Ramirez \u201925, and Richard Geli, M.A. \u201925, worked on an experimental prototype consisting of a team of four mobile robots networked together to model collaborative foraging in fields scanning for pests.&nbsp;&nbsp; Spending countless hours designing and building the system from scratch in the lab in Clark\u2019s Center for Media Arts, Computing, and Design, Holness is building an experimental prototype in which to expand upon the research and test out various ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Holness is interested in owning a farm someday, inspired by his parents, who grew up on farms in an agricultural community.&nbsp; He\u2019s also drawn to this project because farms provide an interesting setting for machine learning, his area of expertise. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cA robot operates quite successfully in a structured environment like a factory floor or even semi-structured environments such as a warehouse where much is controlled but some aspects involve uncertainty. &nbsp;Structure means that everything is engineered specifically,\u201d says Holness. A farm does not provide strict structure, as terrain varies, crops occur in various shapes and sizes growing at different paces, and it abounds in the activity of laborers, equipment, and animals.&nbsp; \u201cA field is unstructured, so it&#8217;s a challenging environment,\u201d he adds. \u201cThere are a lot of pressing needs specifically for digital farm management.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The robots will focus on surveying fields using an information-driven probabilistic algorithm, video cameras, specialized sensors, and laser scanning to identify areas exhibiting indicators of crop damage within the local environment. It\u2019s a great feeling to know that you can understand how to control something like this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"wp-block-group alignright boxout hang has-light-warm-gray-background-color has-background is-content-justification-left is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-12dd3699 wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cracking the code<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Major in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/academics\/undergraduate\/programs\/majors-minors\/computer-science\/\">computer science<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Major in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/academics\/undergraduate\/programs\/majors-minors\/major-in-data-science\/\">data science<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pursue a master&#8217;s in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/academics\/graduate\/programs\/masters\/information-technology\/\">information technology<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/explore\/future-of-tech\/\">Learn to innovate and design virtual worlds<\/a><\/p>\n<\/aside>\n\n\n\n<p>Geli, who is pursuing a master\u2019s in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/academics\/graduate\/programs\/masters\/information-technology\/\" aria-label=\"major in information technology\">information technology<\/a>, was excited to learn more about it.&nbsp; \u201cIt created a lot more confidence in me,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019ve developed more interest in software for such complex systems and now I have a stronger foundation I want to build upon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Holness says this kind of system development (robotics) involves several custom technologies. &nbsp;\u201cRobotics is very wonderfully messy,\u201d Holness says. \u201cThere are many opportunities for things to go wrong, and they often do.\u201d Ramirez and Geli learned about operating systems and networking using the Linux system and robotics middleware software.&nbsp;&nbsp; They also learned about several topics in robotics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After graduation, Geli hopes to focus on research in a lab setting. Ramirez would be happy to continue working in robotics.&nbsp; Holness says the students worked on concepts drawing upon material covered in at least five different courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. &nbsp;&nbsp;Moreover, much of the specific work does not exist in textbooks.&nbsp;&nbsp; \u201cThis is hands-on learning and the discovery process in its purest form,\u201d he
