Human actions are causing profound transformations of global systems at unprecedented speeds and scales.&nbsp; These changes jeopardize the sustainability of natural and human systems, and lead to deep uncertainties for decision-making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grounded in nearly a century of applied research at Clark University, the George Perkins Marsh Institute studies the interconnected social, economic, ecological, institutional, governance and other systems through which humans interact with their surrounding environments. The institute coordinates resources from Clark University and elsewhere to study human transformation of the environment and responses to these changes. We promote collaborative, evidence-based research that challenges traditional disciplinary boundaries to address some of the most pressing issues facing today\u2019s world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Work at the institute is oriented around the need for deep, systems-based understanding of the causes and consequences of climate and environmental change, focusing on relationships to human behavior and well-being. Our primary themes for research and engagement include (1) Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation, (2) Local and Global Food Security, (3) Healthy and Viable Ecosystems, and (4) Sustainable Communities and Governance, with cross-cutting emphasis on risk, vulnerability, mitigation, and adaptation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The institute is one of the most productive hubs for research activity and funding at Clark University, generating approximately half of all external research funds received by the University on an average annual basis. We also helped to establish (and are a core part of) the School for&nbsp;Climate, Environment, and Society at Clark University. Supporting the school\u2019s mission, we seek equitable and just solutions to the challenges of global climate and environmental change, and work with practitioners and frontline communities to implement solutions from local to global scales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grants to institute researchers support work in such topics as forests and climate change, coastal adaptation and resilience, arctic sea ice, ecosystem service values, resource extraction and governance, urban youth violence, and relationships between climate, land use, agriculture and human development. Recently funded projects address topics such as urban food security, natural climate solutions, solutions to water scarcity, sea ice changes in the Arctic, patterns and environmental impacts of lawn fertilizer use, climate monitoring for agriculture, the economic benefit of large-scale water quality improvements, and pollinator conservation, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The institute is also dedicated to the provision of research opportunities for Clark graduate and undergraduate students. Dozens of students participate in the institute\u2019s externally funded research projects each year. Other programs for student research include the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/hero-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Human-Environment Regional Observatory (HERO)<\/a>\u00a0research program and the Albert, Norma and Howard \u201977\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/marsh-institute\/student-opportunities\/geller-research-fellowships\/\">Geller Student Research Grants<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The George Perkins Marsh Institute makes a difference through advancements in basic and applied science, engagement with decision-makers, provision of research opportunities for students, and communication with the public. We coordinate workshops, conferences, and seminars that bring together scientists, students, stakeholders, and policy makers. We also host visiting scientists and scholars to promote cross-institutional collaborations. Institute researchers play important roles in national and international science and policy advisory bodies such the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the Global Land Program, North American Carbon Program, and International Arctic Science Committee. The Institute also represents Clark University in its role as a recognized non-governmental observer organization with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In past years, the institute played a leading role in developing the Core Project on Global Land-Use\/Cover Change (LUCC) for the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme and the International Human Dimensions Programme, and assisted the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) in developing the analytical capacities to address environmental changes in general. Books resulting from Marsh Institute activities include&nbsp;<em>The Earth as Transformed by Human Action<\/em>&nbsp;(1990),&nbsp;<em>Regions at Risk: Comparisons of Threatened Environments<\/em>&nbsp;(1995),&nbsp;<em>Economic Analysis for Ecosystem Based Management: Applications to Marine and Coastal Environments<\/em>&nbsp;(2010),&nbsp;<em>Innovations in Sustainable Consumption: New Economics, Socio-technical Transitions and Social Practices<\/em>&nbsp;(2014),&nbsp;<em>Benefit Transfer of Environmental and Resource Values: A Guide for Researchers and Practitioners<\/em>&nbsp;(2015), and&nbsp;<em>Governing Extractive Industries: Politics, History, Ideas<\/em>&nbsp;(2018).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the facilities, offices, and centers that comprise the institute is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/marsh-institute\/research\/jeanne-x-kasperson-research-library\/\">Jeanne X. Kasperson Research Library<\/a>, whose holdings include one of the most extensive research collections in North America on risks, hazards, and global environmental change. We are also home to the Center for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/centers\/natural-resource-extraction-and-society\/\">Study of Natural Resource Extraction and Society<\/a>\u00a0(Extractives@ Clark). We work closely with numerous departments, centers and schools across Clark University, including the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/departments\/geography\/\">Graduate School of Geography<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/sustainability-social-justice\/\">Department of Sustainability and Social Justice<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/departments\/economics\/\">Department of Economics<\/a>, and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/centers\/geospatial-analytics\/\">Center for Geospatial Analytics<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This website provides information regarding the many programs and initiatives supported by the institute, as well as announcements of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/marsh-institute\/news-and-events\/seminar-series\/\">seminars<\/a>&nbsp;and other&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/marsh-institute\/news-and-events\/events\/\">events<\/a>.
