{"id":1477,"date":"2026-05-27T12:14:06","date_gmt":"2026-05-27T16:14:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/magazine\/?p=1477"},"modified":"2026-05-27T12:35:04","modified_gmt":"2026-05-27T16:35:04","slug":"seeding-a-partnership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/magazine\/seeding-a-partnership\/","title":{"rendered":"Seeding a Partnership"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1800\" height=\"1200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/90\/Wollo-Ethiopia-30-OCT-2025-14.jpg\" alt=\"Professor Morgan Ruelle with Teferi Abate, a senior research anthropologist at Yale and an expert on agrarian practices in Ethiopia\u2019s Wollo region.\" class=\"wp-image-1264\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Professor Morgan Ruelle with Teferi Abate, a senior research anthropologist at Yale and an expert on agrarian practices in Ethiopia\u2019s Wollo region.<strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of a research project with Professor Morgan Ruelle of Clark\u2019s School of Climate, Environment, and Society (CES), Marshall Fredericksen, M.S. \u201926, spent last summer interviewing farmers who have proven resilient in the face of drought, famine, and conflict in Ethiopia\u2019s Wollo area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Funded by The Rockefeller Foundation, the two researchers and their partners in the U.S. and Ethiopia are investigating whether farmers\u2019 traditional practice of growing grain mixtures could offer a climate-resilient solution to food insecurity in Ethiopia and other parts of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, Ruelle and his CES colleagues are expanding their collaborations in Ethiopia. In October, Clark signed a three-year agreement with one of the project\u2019s partner institutions, Wollo University, to \u201csupport collaborative research, teaching, and student engagement between our two institutions, with the intention to renew and deepen our partnership over time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The agreement also allows for faculty and student exchanges and \u201ca streamlined application pathway for Wollo students pursuing graduate study at Clark,\u201d along with \u201cshared seminars, workshops, and short-term programs, staff development, and exchange of academic
