Online stories try to create an emotional response in users to generate comments and clicks.\u00a0 Before making an assumption based on a headline, use the next steps to learn more about where the information came from.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Investigate<\/strong> the source.\u00a0 Google it! See what others are saying about the author or publisher. Ask yourself questions like: What is the author\u2019s area of expertise? Or what is the author\u2019s agenda in writing this story?\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Find credible coverage.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Find news sources that are transparent about how they gather information and avoid using loaded language to influence your opinion.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trace the claim back to the original source.<\/strong>\u00a0If there\u2019s a picture, do a <a href=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.pub\/webliteracy\/chapter\/using-google-reverse-image-search\/\">reverse image search<\/a> to find where it came from.\u00a0If there\u2019s a quote, <a href=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.pub\/webliteracy\/chapter\/tracking-the-source-of-viral-content\/\">search for its original context<\/a>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Use a fact-checker site. <\/strong>Sites like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/\">Politifact,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.factcheck.org\/\">factcheck.org<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snopes.com\/\">Snopes<\/a> provide context around viral claims and can quickly confirm whether the headline is true or not.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-remember-to-take-care-of-yourself-nbsp\">Remember to Take Care of Yourself&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Share responsibly<\/strong>.\u00a0Even if you think a story is true, avoid sharing it until you can verify it.\u00a0Ask yourself who benefits from your behavior online?\u00a0Are you truly informing people, or are you driving engagement that ultimately only benefits Social Media Platforms?\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Engage with news intentionally.<\/strong>\u00a0Focus on where you can have an impact.\u00a0Try to avoid \u201cdoomscrolling\u201d; try setting limits on how often you check news and social media.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lean into your community.\u00a0<\/strong>Anxiety is compounded by feelings of powerlessness.\u00a0Find ways to improve your community and build relationships, even if it seems insignificant.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-further-reading-nbsp\">Further Reading&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Caulfield, M.
