Admission Criteria and Course Credit
The May Term in Luxembourg is open only to Clark University undergraduates who have not completed their studies prior to the beginning of the May Term. It is not open to students from other schools. At times, Clark graduate students or students from the School of Professional Studies can be admitted pending individual arrangements. Enrolled Clark students will receive normal day-college credit (1 full unit).
In general, the admission criteria include: academic performance (a transcript is required with the application form), reasons for participation, and relevance of the course to the student’s academic career. Applicants may be interviewed at the Luxembourg Program Office at Clark University. The Luxembourg Program reserves the right to not accept applicants who are currently on conduct sanctions at Clark, including disciplinary or academic probation, and/or students who have a history of sanctions, including verbal, written, or disciplinary warnings, probation, and/or suspension.
Program Fee

The program fee covers tuition for one course, room and board, all meals Monday through Friday, all field trips and entrance fees associated with a course or official tours, GeoBlue medical insurance, and the festive Henry J. and Erna D. Leir Luncheon at Michelin Star Restaurant Lea Linster the day before departure.
Not Included
Round trip airfare between Boston and Luxembourg is not included. If you need help purchasing your ticket, we can refer you to an experienced travel agent with whom we have worked in the past to get students to Luxembourg. Other expenses not included in the program fee are passport/visa expenses, books, cellphone expenses (we require that you have a cellphone that functions in Europe), personal expenses (for example, students may undertake optional travel and cultural events during their own personal time and at their own risk and expense), and meals from Saturday to Sunday evening (no meal plan at our residence on weekends). Financial Assistance
In honor of Mr. and Mrs. Leir, every student accepted to the program is subsidized by The Leir Foundation. As a result of this subsidy, instead of the projected actual cost of approximately $7,300, all students pay only $4,700.
Students on need-based financial aid at Clark will receive an additional, individually calculated, discounted program fee from the Leir Luxembourg Program. On your application to the May Term, indicate whether or not you receive need-based aid here at Clark. The Luxembourg Program, in conjunction with the Office of Financial Assistance, will calculate and automatically reduce the program fee based on your eligibility.
First-Year Student Scholarship
The program offers First-Year Student Scholarships, in the amount of $300 each. The scholarship is new to the Leir May Term in 2023 to bring more first-year students to enroll in the program. No formal application needs to be submitted. Students will be automatically selected if you are a First-year undergraduate student.
Merit Scholarships
The program offers Merit Scholarships, in the amount of $600 each. In order to be eligible for a scholarship, you must be in good academic and social standing, and have an overall GPA of at least 3.60. No formal application needs to be submitted. Students will be automatically selected according to their academic record.
Excellence Through Diversity Scholarships
Students can apply for the Excellence Through Diversity Scholarships: up to Ten scholarships will be offered, each at $800. Through these Diversity Scholarships we will recognize the academic achievement of students from under-represented racial and ethnic groups, first-generation college students, students from low-income families, and students with a history of overcoming adversity. Students who work to create inclusive spaces on campus through co-curricular activities and community service will also be considered for this scholarship. Students have to send in an essay/explanation why they think they qualify for this scholarship.
Global Citizen Scholarships
And finally, students may also apply for a Global Citizen Scholarship: up to Ten scholarships will be offered, each at $600. These awards will recognize and promote the efforts of Clark students dedicated to the pursuit of cross-cultural communication, civic engagement, and intellectual endeavors in the pursuit of a cosmopolitan vision — all matters of great concern to Mr. and Mrs. Leir. Students have to send in an essay/explanation why they think they qualify for this scholarship. Please note that this scholarship opportunity is only available to U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
There is no limit to the forms of financial support students can receive towards the May Term. Qualified students are able to receive any combination of scholarships and need-based aid awards. Aid awards and scholarships are granted at the time of a student’s acceptance to the Program.
We highly encourage all interested students apply to the May Term. At the time of their acceptance to the program, students will be given an overview of their financial award package, including all forms of need-based aid awards and scholarships granted, and the final amount they will be expected to contribute.
