This document (I-20, DS-2019) will allow you to apply for a visa and enter the United States in your intended visa category. Important terms and steps for obtaining your visa document are discussed below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-important-terms\">Important terms<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Visa document<\/summary>\n<p>The ISSO issues two different kinds of visa documents (or \u201ccertificates of eligibility\u201d) to students:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Form I-20<\/strong>&nbsp;for F-1 students<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Form DS-2019<\/strong>&nbsp;for J-1 students<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Visa<\/summary>\n<p>A visa is a form that is glued or stamped in your passport by a U.S. consulate outside the United States. You need a visa to request permission to enter the United States for a particular reason, such as full-time study. Even if you already have another U.S. visa such as a B-1\/B-2 visitor visa, you need an F-1 or J-1 visa to study full-time at a university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Canadian Citizens<\/strong><em>:&nbsp;<\/em>If you are a citizen of Canada, you will typically not need a visa to enter the U.S. However, you will need a Form DS-2019 or I-20 from the ISSO, and all rules for maintaining lawful status in the U.S. during your stay still apply.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Duration of status<\/summary>\n<p>F-1 and J-1 students are admitted to the United States for duration of status. As&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/studyinthestates.dhs.gov\/2015\/03\/what-my-duration-status\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Study in the States<\/a>&nbsp;explains: \u201cAs an international student in the United States, you have a certain amount of time to arrive in the country, complete your studies, and return to your home country. Understanding the length of time you are permitted to be in the United States is a very important part of maintaining your status. When you arrive at a U.S. port of entry, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer will provide you with an admission stamp that will list the date in which you must depart the United States. As an F-1 student, you will most likely have duration of status (D\/S) listed on your admission stamp. D\/S means you may remain in the United States so long as you maintain your nonimmigrant student status.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please refer to ISSO guidance for maintaining your valid&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/international-students-scholars\/immigration\/f-1-students\/\" type=\"page\" id=\"14\">F-1<\/a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/international-students-scholars\/immigration\/j-1-students\/\" type=\"page\" id=\"16\">J-1 status<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>F-1 status<\/summary>\n<p>Most international students come to the U.S. in F-1 student status. If you have been accepted to a full-time undergraduate and graduate program, certificate, or English-language programs, Clark University will sponsor your F-1 visas status. F-1 students cannot study part time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>F-1 students are permitted to bring a spouse and unmarried minor child under 21 with them on F-2 dependent visas. You will need to demonstrate that you have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/isso.clarku.edu\/index.cfm?FuseAction=PublicDocuments.View&amp;File_ID=15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sufficient resources<\/a>&nbsp;to support your dependents during your stay. The ISSO will make a determination regarding the most appropriate visa category for you after you complete the International Student Form in Clark\u2019s application system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The J-1 student category is part of the U.S. Department of State&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/j1visa.state.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Exchange Visitor Program<\/a>&nbsp;and has strict rules about who qualifies for this visa category. The J-1 category is designated for exchange visitors, recipients of U.S. or home country scholarships requiring J-1 status, and students who are receiving most of their funding from a government, university, or other non-personal or family source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>J-1 students are permitted to bring a spouse and unmarried minor child under 21 with them on J-2 dependent visas. You will need to demonstrate that you have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/isso.clarku.edu\/index.cfm?FuseAction=PublicDocuments.View&amp;File_ID=15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sufficient resources<\/a>&nbsp;to support your dependents during your stay. Please check with your admissions counselor for more information on the process to submit your deposit and any important deadlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please read through this information carefully. Failure to submit the correct documents in a timely fashion could delay the issuance of your I-20 or DS-2019.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Visa document instructions<\/summary>\n<p>After you pay your enrollment deposit, you will receive an email with instructions on how to initiate a request for your student visa document through the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/isso.clarku.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ISSO Portal<\/a>. Please pay attention to any deadlines in order to receive your documents in time to apply for a student visa.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Students currently enrolled at another institution with valid F-1\/J-1 student status<\/summary>\n<p>If you are currently enrolled at another school in the U.S. with F-1 or J-1 student status and have a valid Form I-20 or DS-2019, you may be eligible to transfer your student status to Clark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When setting up your profile on the ISSO portal, complete the \u201cTransfer In\u201d request to facilitate the transfer of your student record from your previous school.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Preparing your financial documentation<\/summary>\n<p>You are required to demonstrate that you have enough financial resources to cover the estimated costs for your first academic year of study. These costs include tuition, fees, health insurance, living expenses, and support for any dependents who are coming with you. While you are only required to show that you have financial resources for one academic year, it is essential that you plan your finances carefully for the duration of your program. Obtaining additional funding after your arrival is not guaranteed. It may be very difficult to secure on-campus employment, financial aid, or additional scholarships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Review the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/isso.clarku.edu\/index.cfm?FuseAction=PublicDocuments.View&amp;File_ID=15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">estimated costs<\/a>&nbsp;for your program<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Documents must be less than six months old.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Documents must be issued in English or accompanied by an English translation. You must have an invitation from a Clark department. You will not be considered an employee of Clark and will not receive any employee benefits. Typically, visiting scholars have an affiliation with an international university and are self-funded and self-guided in their research activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visiting scholars who need visas to come to the U.S. will be sponsored by Clark as J-1 exchange visitors, in either the J-1 research scholar or J-1 short-term scholar category. These visa categories are part of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/j1visa.state.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">U.S. Department of State exchange programs<\/a>. Once Clark has agreed to sponsor you as a J-1 visiting scholar, you will be issued a Form DS-2019 visa document so that you can apply for a J-1 visa and enter the U.S. in J-1 status.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Steps to receive your DS-2019<\/summary>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Obtain an invitation from a sponsoring Clark department or center\/institute<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your sponsoring department will submit a request to the ISSO on your behalf for a visa document<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Work with the ISSO to submit necessary immigration and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/isso.clarku.edu\/index.cfm?FuseAction=PublicDocuments.View&amp;File_ID=15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">financial documents<\/a>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Acceptable financial documents include:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Funding letter from your home government or institution<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Personal or family bank statement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Receive your DS-2019 for yourself and any J-2 dependents<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Apply for your visa<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For scholars staying more than six months with no Clark funding: pay a $200 international scholar fee upon arrival.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/details>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"i-20-faqs\" class=\"wp-block-group section is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-i-20-frequently-asked-questions\">I-20 frequently asked questions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-style-faq is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>How do I request my I-20?<\/summary>\n<p>After you deposit the enrollment fee you will receive an email inviting you to the ISSO Portal to submit your I-20 request. Keep in mind it can take 2-3 business days for you to receive your invitation to the ISSO Portal once I-20 processing has opened for your admissions term.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-style-faq is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>I haven\u2019t received my I-20 or instructions on requesting my I-20. Where can I get this information?<\/summary>\n<p>All communication regarding your I-20 will go to your Clark email address. It is VERY important to set up your Clark email and check it every day. The CIP code indicated on your I-20 is the government code designated for your major. The National Center for Educational Statistics provides the following explanation of CIP codes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe CIP is the accepted federal government statistical standard on instructional program classifications and is used in a variety of education information surveys and databases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CIP titles and program descriptions are intended to be generic categories into which program completions data can be placed,&nbsp;<strong>not exact duplicates of a specific major or field of study titles used by individual institutions<\/strong>. CIP codes are standard statistical coding tools that reflect current practice, and are not a prescriptive list of officially recognized or permitted programs. The CIP is not intended to be a regulatory device. CIP codes, for the most part, are not intended to correspond exclusively to any specific degree or program level. Your earliest arrival date may also be printed on your H-1B visa.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Other visa types<\/strong>: Contact the ISSO if you have questions about your arrival date.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>U.S. Customs and Border Protection Inspection<\/summary>\n<p>When you arrive at a port-of-entry to the United States, you will be subject to inspection by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers. CBP officers will conduct the Immigration, Customs, and Agriculture components of the Inspections process. A CBP official will inspect your travel documents, ask you questions, and make the final decision about your admissibility to enter the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be prepared to discuss you reasons for coming to the United States \u2014 such as to study, do research, or teach at Clark \u2014 and the expected length of your stay in the U.S. You can find more information about the admissions requirements and process on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/travel\/international-visitors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CBP International Visitors webpage<\/a>. If you are flying to the U.S., make sure you bring all your travel documents with you in your carry-on and do not put them in your checked luggage as you will not have access to luggage until after you clear customs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information about CBP inspection, you can check out CBP\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/travel\/us-citizens\/know-before-you-go\">Know Before You Go<\/a>&nbsp;page.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Documents you will need at U.S. Port of Entry<\/summary>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Unexpired passport that will be valid at least six months into the future on the day you return to the United States<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your visa document from Clark (Form I-20 \/ Form DS-2019 \/ I-797 Approval Notice)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A valid U.S. visa (exception: Canadian citizens do not require visas)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Supporting documents such as:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Financial documents, such as your bank statements, scholarship letters, or job offer letters from Clark<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>F-1 and J-1 visa holders<\/strong>: Your I-901 SEVIS fee payment receipt<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>F-1 and J-1 students<\/strong>: Your admission letter<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Employees and research scholars<\/strong>: Your appointment letter<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Employees and scholars<\/strong>: CV or resume<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other evidence that shows your purpose for coming to the U.S.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Your I-94 record<\/summary>\n<p>Upon arrival, CBP gathers travelers\u2019 arrival\/departure information automatically from their electronic travel records.&nbsp;This electronic record of your arrival is also known as your I-94. Every time you enter the United States, a CBP officer must update your I-94 with the date you entered and the status (e.g., F-1, J-1, H1-B) with which you were admitted to the U.S. This electronic record is your proof of legal admission into the U.S. in the appropriate student, scholar, or employee status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>After arriving in the U.S., make sure you download a copy of your I-94 from CPB\u2019s&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/i94.cbp.dhs.gov\/I94\/#\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">I-94 lookup site<\/a><strong>&nbsp;and ensure that it is accurate.&nbsp;<\/strong>Contact the ISSO immediately if you are not able to locate your I-94 or there are errors; any mistakes need to be corrected right away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>F-1 and J-1 visa holders,<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>and their F-2 \/ J-2 dependents,<\/strong>&nbsp;should always have an I-94 that indicates an \u201cadmit until\u201d date of \u201c<strong>D\/S<\/strong>.\u201d D\/S stands for \u201cduration of status,\u201d which means that you are allowed to remain in the U.S. for as long as your F or J documents are unexpired and you are continuing to pursue your program of study, research, or teaching at Clark. H-1B and other visa holders will have I-94 records that have a specific expiration date.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"travel-to-clark\" class=\"wp-block-group section is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-travel-to-clark\">Travel to Clark<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Clark is in Worcester, Massachusetts, which is about 40 miles west of Boston. Read below for directions to Clark and arrival information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Logan International Airport<\/summary>\n<p>The main port of arrival in the Greater Boston area is&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.massport.com\/logan-airport\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Logan International Airport (BOS)<\/a>, which is served by all major U.S. airlines and many international airlines. From Logan, Worcester can be reached by public transportation (commuter rail), shared van service, taxis, and private car services such as Uber or Lyft. Please note that if you use Uber or Lyft, your pick-up will not be directly outside the terminal, but rather in a designated pick-up place for Ride Apps in the Central Garage. Please visit click&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.massport.com\/logan-airport\/to-from-logan\/transportation-options\/ride-app-tnc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>&nbsp;for more information.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/peterpanbus.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Peter Pan<\/a>&nbsp;bus company offers a daily bus service from Logan Airport to Union Station in Worcester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most convenient way to get to Worcester is to use a shared van service. The service will pick you up outside of the airport terminal and bring you directly to Worcester.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.knightslimo.com\/logan-airport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Knight\u2019s Airport Limousine Service<\/a>&nbsp;provides a shared van service to Worcester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use public transportation to reach Clark. This may be the least expensive option, but it requires you to take multiple forms of public transportation, which can be difficult when you have luggage with you.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>MBTA Public Transportation (The T)<\/summary>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"94\" height=\"80\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/international-students-scholars\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/135\/t-logo.avif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-83\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), or the \u201cT\u201d, operates an extensive network of subways, buses, commuter rail and ferry lines. From the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mbta.com\/stops\/place-aport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Airport<\/a>&nbsp;station, take the T\u2019s Silver Line bus to South Station or Back Bay station where you will take the commuter rail to Worcester. Visit the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mbta.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MBTA web site<\/a>&nbsp;for fare information, trip and route planners, and schedules.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"international-short-term-visitors\" class=\"wp-block-group group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-international-short-term-visitors-to-clark-university\">International short-term visitors to Clark University<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>International visitors to Clark University for short-term business or pleasure will need to seek a B Visa or a waiver under the Visa Waiver Program to travel to the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-b-visa\">B-visa<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<strong>B-1 Visa<\/strong>&nbsp;for a visitor coming to the U.S. for short-term business, such as to participate in scientific, educational, professional, or business conventions, conferences, or seminars.&nbsp; The&nbsp;<strong>B-2 Visa&nbsp;<\/strong>is for a visitor coming to the U.S. for pleasure\/tourism or medical treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The B Visa is&nbsp;not&nbsp;appropriate for students or long-term scholars coming to Clark University, for anyone coming to Clark University for purposes of employment, for students engaging in formal study in a credit-bearing program, or for anyone coming to Clark University to engage in collaborative research or as primary investigators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visitors should contact the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in their country for information on the visa application and processing time.&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong>A letter of invitation from Clark University may be helpful and can be requested by following the process outlined below.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-visa-waiver-program\">Visa Waiver Program<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Citizens from a limited number of countries are permitted to visit the U.S. for up to 90 days without a B-1 or B-2 visa under the Visa Waiver Program.&nbsp; Visitors coming to the U.S. for short-term business are admitted in WB status and visitors coming to the U.S. for pleasure are admitted in WT status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Certain requirements apply under the Visa Waiver Program, including passport requirements, pre-screening clearance authorization called ESTA, and evidence of ESTA approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-time-in-the-u-s\">Time in the U.S.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Entry into the U.S. under the Visa Waiver Program generally limited to a non-extendable maximum stay of 90 days, or six months under the B-1\/B-2 Visa status. Stays may also be limited to the expected duration of the visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-employment-in-the-u-s\">Employment in the U.S.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Employment and\/or per diem payments are not permitted on the B Visa or under the Visa Waiver Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A B-1 visitor (and by extension visitors on the Visa Waiver Program) may receive reimbursement for travel and living expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A B-1 visitor (and by extension visitors on the Visa Waiver Program) may also be paid an honorarium for \u201cusual academic activities,\u201d as long as the academic activity does not last longer than 9 days at any institution and the visitor has not accepted similar payments from more than 5 institutions during the previous 6 months (this is known as the 9\/5\/6\/ Rule).&nbsp; \u201cUsual academic activities\u201d at Clark University include lecturing, teaching and share of knowledge, or performance (when the performance if composed of non-paying students and\/or is open to the general public for free).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.S. Internal Revenue Service considers all honorarium payments to be taxable income and requires that Clark, as the paying agent, withhold at a 30% rate.&nbsp; Due to requirements of both the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), processing honorarium payments takes time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please note that honorarium rules are different for B Visa holders and other visa holders (such as J-1 or H1-B).&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong>To confirm if Clark University can reimburse a visitor for travel and living expenses, or pay an honorarium for usual academic activities, please view the full process&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.clarku.edu\/business-docs\/download\/international-short-term-visitor-process\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Questions regarding visas and compensation based on visa category can be directed to the ISSO Director (Amanda Desai-&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:Adesai@clarku.edu\">Adesai@clarku.edu<\/a>).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><em>Please note that the ISSO cannot advise on taxation of payments made to guests.
