As the first Chancellor of the German Empire, he deployed <em>Realpolitik<\/em> (a political philosophy in which power can be used at any cost in preservation of national interest (Humphreys, 2014)) to enlarge his support base by strategically implementing small-scale policies popular with the working class (Kissinger, 1968). This technique coupled with his <em>Kulturkampf<\/em> (culture war) against the Catholic church and ethnic minorities (the Danes to the North, the Francophiles to the West, and the Poles to the East) created a strong backbone for German Nationalism (Taylor, 1967).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Postmark:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>B\u00fcckeberg Hameln 4 10. 36 &#8211; 18<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Festpostkarte B\u00fcckeberg \u2014 Erntedankfest 1936<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Ernte Danktag<\/em><\/p>\n<p>B\u00fcckeberg Hameln [October] 4, 1936 &#8211; 6pm<br \/>\nB\u00fcckeberg holiday postcard \u2014 Thanksgiving 1936<br \/>\nHarvest appreciation day<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Historical background:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Reich Harvest Thanksgiving Festival (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Das Reichserntedankfest<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) was a holiday created by the Minister of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda Joseph Goebbels that ran from 1933 to 1937. The festival was a cooption of a traditional Christian Thanksgiving holiday popular with peasantry for the furtherance of the Nazi ideal <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>Blut und Boden<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(Blood and Soil) (Hameln Association, 2023)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Blut und Boden<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is a nationalist slogan combining the white supremacist idea of pure \u201cblood\u201d with the nationalist romanticization and idealization of \u201cfarmer peasants<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d (Grunberger, 1995). To the Nazis, farming upheld natural \u201crural values\u201d which were seen as superior to weaker \u201curban culture,\u201d seen as having Jewish influence (Koonz, 2003)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. German peasants reacted positively to the festival, with attendance reaching 1.2 million in 1937 (Hameln Association, 2023)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.
