This study tests if and how county-level rates of infection and death have changed in relation to societal county characteristics through time as the pandemic progressed. This longitudinal study sampled monthly county-level COVID-19 case and death data per 100,000 residents from April 2020 to March 2022, and studied the relationships of these variables with racial/ethnic, demographic, health, and socioeconomic characteristics for 3125 or 97.0% of U.S. counties, accounting for 96.4% of the U.S. population. The association of all county-level characteristics with COVID-19 case and death rates changed significantly through time, and showed different patterns. For example, counties with higher population proportions of Black, Native American, foreign-born non-citizen, elderly residents, households in poverty, or higher income inequality suffered disproportionately higher COVID-19 case and death rates at the beginning of the pandemic, followed by reversed, attenuated or fluctuating patterns, depending on the variable. Patterns for counties with higher White versus Black population proportions showed somewhat inverse patterns. Counties with higher female population proportions initially had lower case rates but higher death rates, and case and death rates become more coupled and fluctuated later in the pandemic. Counties with higher population densities had fluctuating case and death rates, with peaks coinciding with new variants of COVID-19. Counties with a greater proportion of university-educated residents had lower case and death rates throughout the pandemic, although the strength of this relationship fluctuated through time. This research clearly shows that how different segments of society are affected by a pandemic changes through time. This project will support continuation of a pilot Aquatic Science Day event initiated last year that provides hands on activities for CPPA students at the Coes Reservoir beach to teach concepts of aquatic ecology, watershed stewardship, and the scientific method. The Aquatic Science Day will be held in June 2024, and students will cycle through four to five activity stations that include examining microbes present in the pond, exploring a watershed pollution model, investigation of nutrient addition impacts to pond communities, and a fish population survey. The nutrient addition experiment will be run by Ahlgren and Clark students whereby students propose, test, and evaluate nutrient addition experiments with Coes Reservoir water. Students will also be given the opportunity to visit the biology research labs at Clark University. Aquatic Science Day will be run in collaboration with other community groups invested in aquatic research and stewardship: Tatnuck Watershed Association, The City of Worcester Lakes and Ponds program, and Worcester State University. This work also integrates with Ahlgren’s research on impacts of urbanization on microbes in Worcester’s ponds and lakes. In addition, this project will support purchase of composters, microscope sets for use during Aquatic Science Day and throughout the year, and an educational field trip to Save the Bay, Providence Rhode Island to learn about downstream impacts students have on marine ecosystems. These two additional activities along with the Aquatic Day will enhance existing fifth grade curriculum on aquatic ecology, nutrient cycling, and ecosystem stewardship to develop the next generation of science-informed stewards of Worcester’s natural resources.
","Number of Periods":1,"URL":""},"facultyid":"C70244640","funding":{"6783":{"id":6783,"grantid":3919,"fundedamount":"5000","yearfunded":1,"fundedtype":"Total","currencytype":"USD","startdate":"2024-04-18","enddate":"2024-12-31"}},"coauthors":{"6270":{"authorid":6270,"grantid":3919,"firstname":"Nathan","middleinitial":"A","lastname":"Ahlgren","authortype":"Program Coordinator","percenteffort":"100","sameschoolflag":1,"facultyid":"C70244640","primaryunitid":7}},"status":[{"grantid":3919,"status":"Funded - In Progress","statuslabel":"Funded - In Progress","term":"Spring","year":2024,"termid":"2023/03","listingorder":3,"completionorder":5}],"userid":"C70244640","attachments":[],"sort_date":"2024-12-31"},{"activityid":437,"fields":{"Title":"Collaborative research: Characterization of Synechococcus-cyanophage interactions across phylogenetic and temporal scales","Sponsor":"NSF","Grant ID / Contract ID":"2023175","Award Date":"2020-07-16","Start Date":"2020-09-01","End Date":"2023-08-31","Period Length":1,"Period Unit":"Year","Indirect Funding":1,"Indirect Cost Rate":"50.3","Total Funding":"724783","Total Direct Funding":"495276","Currency Type":"USD","Description":"","Abstract":"
Viral infection of microorganisms has broad consequences for marine biogeochemical cycling and the generation and structuring of diversity in host communities in the oceans. Understanding which phage infect which hosts (‘who infects whom’) is critical to understanding the impact viruses have on marine microbial community and function, but there are critical gaps in our knowledge of how phage-bacteria interactions vary across scales of diversity and time. Previous work has frequently focused on hosts or viruses, but studying both together is key to understanding how host-phage interactions impact the genetic and ecological organization of both. Here we will conduct a phylogenetically-informed study of a model tractable system, natural communities of co-occurring Synechococcus and cyanophage in Narragansett Bay (NB), to characterize phage-host interactions across different scales of diversity and time. We will isolate a large collection of ~100 Synechococcus and ~200 cyanophage from NB and conduct infection assays and comparative genomics on these isolates. We will also employ amplicon sequencing of highly variable loci for both Synechococcus and cyanophage in NB for 10 years of archived monthly samples and a new weekly time-series over two years to track community dynamics across broad to fine genetic scales: ecotypes to within-species variants. These studies will address three key questions: 1) Are there inherent boundaries of genetic relatedness (i.e. ecotype, species, or finer levels) at which the patterns of infection networks fundamentally shift from being mostly nested to mostly modular? (2) What are the underlying mechanisms and genetic loci that determine the boundaries of infection, i.e. host range and phage susceptibility? (3) How do host-phage interactions at different phylogenetic levels influence community structure over short (weeks to months) and long (year-to-year) time scales?
","Number of Periods":3,"URL":""},"facultyid":"C70244640","funding":{"1700":{"id":1700,"grantid":437,"fundedamount":"240097","yearfunded":1,"fundedtype":"Total","currencytype":"USD","startdate":"2020-12-01","enddate":"2021-11-30"},"1701":{"id":1701,"grantid":437,"fundedamount":"247895","yearfunded":2,"fundedtype":"Total","currencytype":"USD","startdate":"2021-12-01","enddate":"2022-11-30"},"1702":{"id":1702,"grantid":437,"fundedamount":"236791","yearfunded":3,"fundedtype":"Total","currencytype":"USD","startdate":"2022-12-01","enddate":"2023-11-30"},"1703":{"id":1703,"grantid":437,"fundedamount":"172797","yearfunded":1,"fundedtype":"Direct","currencytype":"USD","startdate":"2020-12-01","enddate":"2021-11-30"},"1704":{"id":1704,"grantid":437,"fundedamount":"164933","yearfunded":2,"fundedtype":"Direct","currencytype":"USD","startdate":"2021-12-01","enddate":"2022-11-30"},"1705":{"id":1705,"grantid":437,"fundedamount":"157546","yearfunded":3,"fundedtype":"Direct","currencytype":"USD","startdate":"2022-12-01","enddate":"2023-11-30"}},"coauthors":{"1401":{"authorid":1401,"grantid":437,"firstname":"Nathan","middleinitial":"A","lastname":"Ahlgren","authortype":"PI","percenteffort":null,"sameschoolflag":1,"facultyid":"C70244640","primaryunitid":7}},"status":[{"grantid":437,"status":"Funded - In Progress","statuslabel":"Funded - In Progress","term":"Summer","year":2020,"termid":"2019/05","listingorder":3,"completionorder":5}],"userid":"C70244640","attachments":[],"sort_date":"2023-08-31"},{"activityid":1792,"fields":{"Title":"Using the study of urban impacts on water quality, frogs,and microbial communitiesin Worcester waterways to integrate student research, classroom learning, and local STEM outreach","Sponsor":"Clark University","Grant ID / Contract ID":"","Award Date":null,"Start Date":"2022-02-01","End Date":"2023-01-01","Period Length":1,"Period Unit":"Year","Indirect Funding":0,"Indirect Cost Rate":null,"Total Funding":"20000","Total Direct Funding":null,"Currency Type":"USD","Description":"","Abstract":"","Number of Periods":1,"URL":""},"facultyid":"C70244640","funding":{"3053":{"id":3053,"grantid":1792,"fundedamount":"20000","yearfunded":1,"fundedtype":"Total","currencytype":"USD","startdate":"2022-02-01","enddate":"2023-02-01"}},"coauthors":{"2658":{"authorid":2658,"grantid":1792,"firstname":"Nathan","middleinitial":"A","lastname":"Ahlgren","authortype":"PI","percenteffort":null,"sameschoolflag":1,"facultyid":"C70244640","primaryunitid":7},"2659":{"authorid":2659,"grantid":1792,"firstname":"Javier","middleinitial":"F","lastname":"Tabima Restrepo","authortype":"CoPI","percenteffort":null,"sameschoolflag":1,"facultyid":"C70276898","primaryunitid":7},"2660":{"authorid":2660,"grantid":1792,"firstname":"Philip","middleinitial":"J","lastname":"Bergmann","authortype":"CoPI","percenteffort":null,"sameschoolflag":1,"facultyid":"C70196543","primaryunitid":7}},"status":[{"grantid":1792,"status":"Funded - In Progress","statuslabel":"Funded - In Progress","term":"Spring","year":2022,"termid":"2021/03","listingorder":3,"completionorder":5}],"userid":"C70244640","attachments":[],"sort_date":"2023-01-01"},{"activityid":438,"fields":{"Title":"How does urbanization, including urban gardens, impact ant microbial diversity?","Sponsor":"Clark University, Faculty Development grant","Grant ID / Contract ID":"","Award Date":"2020-03-03","Start Date":"2020-03-03","End Date":"2021-03-02","Period Length":1,"Period Unit":"Year","Indirect Funding":0,"Indirect Cost Rate":null,"Total Funding":"6123","Total Direct Funding":null,"Currency Type":"USD","Description":"","Abstract":"
With increasing global urbanization, it is critical to understand how organisms and biotic communities adapt and respond to human managed environments. Animals rely on endosymbiotic gut bacteria for a wide range of benefits including increased nutrition, defense and environmental tolerance, and microbiome research is an exciting, burgeoning area in biology. Insects provide some of the most well understood examples of these relationships, although these interactions are just beginning to be studied [1]. The diversity of ants, along with their widely varied diets, defensive strategies and ability to live in a range of habitats, make them an excellent model system to explore the interactions between bacteria and hosts [2,3]. Acorn nesting ants (i.e. ants whose colonies that live in the hollowed cavities of fallen acorns) are common in both urban and rural spaces wherever oak trees are present [4]. Thus, acorn nesting ants are particularly well suited to disentangling how animals and their microbial symbionts adapt and respond to human management and urbanization. This project proposes to compare the gut microbial diversity and community composition of four local acorn nesting ant species found in urban, forested and garden habitats throughout the greater Worcester area using cutting-edge DNA sequencing methods.
","Number of Periods":1,"URL":""},"facultyid":"C70244640","funding":{"6782":{"id":6782,"grantid":438,"fundedamount":"6123","yearfunded":1,"fundedtype":"Total","currencytype":"USD","startdate":"2020-03-03","enddate":"2021-03-03"}},"coauthors":{"6268":{"authorid":6268,"grantid":438,"firstname":"Kaitlyn","middleinitial":"A.","lastname":"Mathis","authortype":"CoPI","percenteffort":null,"sameschoolflag":1,"facultyid":"C70145851","primaryunitid":7},"6269":{"authorid":6269,"grantid":438,"firstname":"Nathan","middleinitial":"A","lastname":"Ahlgren","authortype":"CoPI","percenteffort":null,"sameschoolflag":1,"facultyid":"C70244640","primaryunitid":7}},"status":[{"grantid":438,"status":"Completed","statuslabel":"Completed","term":"Spring","year":2021,"termid":"2020/03","listingorder":4,"completionorder":6},{"grantid":438,"status":"Funded - In Progress","statuslabel":"Funded - In Progress","term":"Spring","year":2020,"termid":"2019/03","listingorder":3,"completionorder":5}],"userid":"C70244640","attachments":[],"sort_date":"2021-03-02"}]
[48
15

post-850","cu_faculty","type-cu_faculty","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","cu_faculty_group-ces-affiliated","cu_faculty_department-biology

Nathan Ahlgren | Faculty

<meta property="og:description" content="Professor Ahlgren is a marine microbial ecologist.
