We estimate that approximately 15% of (c)(4)s likely pursue advocacy or political action, while most are engaged in unrelated activities. Understanding the distinctive features of the social welfare sector and the politically engaged organizations within it are essential tasks for nonprofit scholars, yet the methodological and empirical challenges are complex and significant. To date, there has been no systematic study of the nature and efficacy of these organizations. We create a multistage methodology that allows researchers to identify politically active (c)(4)s and to investigate subgroups focused on different policy issues and with different member groups. This article summarizes how we identify organizations and strategies needed to reveal whether an organization is engaged in political activities. We explain the approach we took and the challenges we encountered.","Include description in output citation":1,"Origin":"Manual"},"facultyid":"C70237395","status":[{"id":1747,"status":"Completed/Published","term":"Spring","year":2022,"termid":"2021/03","listingorder":6,"completionorder":6},{"id":1747,"status":"Accepted","term":"Fall","year":2021,"termid":"2021/01","listingorder":4,"completionorder":4},{"id":1747,"status":"Revise & Resubmit","term":"Fall","year":2020,"termid":"2020/01","listingorder":3,"completionorder":3},{"id":1747,"status":"Revise & Resubmit","term":"Summer","year":2020,"termid":"2019/05","listingorder":3,"completionorder":3}],"userid":"C70237395","attachments":[],"coauthors_list":["Margaret A. Abstract: Power is a fundamental dimension of social change that evaluators regularly overlook. To evaluate power effectively, the evaluation field needs a necessary reori- entation in understandings of social change goals, outcomes, strategies, and actors. A focus on power is a missing component in advocacy evaluation and represents a paradigm shift for advocacy evaluators. This article explores the theoretical contributions and methodological considerations of evaluating power, drawing from our experience evaluating nine commu- nity organizations’ power-building work focused on economic justice policy reforms. We conclude that four considerations can reorient evaluations to the role of power: (1) grounding power evaluations in equitable evaluation, (2) expanding the scope of evaluations beyond a focus on policy wins to examine individual and collective liberation, (3) incorporating frameworks that acknowledge and assess the iterative and cyclical nature of power building, and (4) clarifying the unit of analysis to consider how a wide array of actors build and wield power.</p>","Include description in output citation":1,"Origin":"Manual"},"facultyid":"C70237395","status":[{"id":1761,"status":"Completed/Published","term":"Fall","year":2021,"termid":"2021/01","listingorder":6,"completionorder":6},{"id":1761,"status":"Accepted","term":"Fall","year":2020,"termid":"2020/01","listingorder":4,"completionorder":4},{"id":1761,"status":"Accepted","term":"Summer","year":2020,"termid":"2019/05","listingorder":4,"completionorder":4}],"userid":"C70237395","attachments":[{"attachmentid":4123,"mimetype":"application/pdf","filename":"Fox & Post 2021 FINAL.pdf","filesize":262663,"downloadurl":"https://faculty180.interfolio.com/public/download.php?key=SDRwNCtxSUpsamxBQ213WS9ucHFuNnMwT0hzQU11b2RPQkJ2cWc3amxyUmNRdVVXTkF4MU1zT21qREtJZEdWZ0d2NTF5ZVE4bnJqaytHY2pqeW5ubGttMy9aK1BXR3dMTTAwVHQrWU90b21LSkplaUZBcEFNTjBDdEFac2IxVUlmTEZOK1hqZVcybz0%3D"}],"coauthors_list":["Margaret A. While considerable attention has been paid in the past to institutional questions, an under-theorized aspect of community-based research is the extent to which the positionality and interpersonal relationships between actors also impact the outcomes and sustainability of collaboration. The diverse authors featured in this volume critically and thoughtfully probe the ways in which institutional hierarchies, authority and control intersect with individual agency and community transformation. The result is a collection of nuanced and multi-vocal considerations of the hidden dynamics and complex relationships of university-community partnerships, as well as strategies for improved practice.","Include description in output citation":1,"Origin":"Manual"},"facultyid":"C70237395","status":[{"id":7832,"status":"Completed/Published","term":"Fall","year":2021,"termid":"2021/01","listingorder":6,"completionorder":6},{"id":7832,"status":"In Progress","term":"Fall","year":2020,"termid":"2020/01","listingorder":1,"completionorder":1},{"id":7832,"status":"In Progress","term":"Summer","year":2020,"termid":"2019/05","listingorder":1,"completionorder":1}],"userid":"C70237395","attachments":[],"coauthors_list":[],"sort_date":"2021-9-01"}]
[{"activityid":4859,"fields":{"Title":"Expanding the study of how 501(c)(3)-(c)(4) hybrid organizations build community power, enhance leadership, and strengthen democratic processes","Sponsor":"Robert Wood Johnson Foundation","Grant ID / Contract ID":"24705","Award Date":"2024-10-25","Start Date":"2024-11-15","End Date":"2026-11-14","Period Length":1,"Period Unit":"Year","Indirect Funding":1,"Indirect Cost Rate":"12","Total Funding":"300000","Total Direct Funding":"0","Currency Type":"USD","Description":"","Abstract":"","Number of Periods":2,"URL":""},"facultyid":"C70237395","funding":{"8990":{"id":8990,"grantid":4859,"fundedamount":"150000","yearfunded":1,"fundedtype":"Total","currencytype":"USD","startdate":"2024-11-15","enddate":"2025-11-15"},"8991":{"id":8991,"grantid":4859,"fundedamount":"150000","yearfunded":2,"fundedtype":"Total","currencytype":"USD","startdate":"2025-11-15","enddate":"2026-11-15"},"8992":{"id":8992,"grantid":4859,"fundedamount":"0","yearfunded":1,"fundedtype":"Direct","currencytype":"USD","startdate":"2024-11-15","enddate":"2025-11-15"},"8993":{"id":8993,"grantid":4859,"fundedamount":"0","yearfunded":2,"fundedtype":"Direct","currencytype":"USD","startdate":"2025-11-15","enddate":"2026-11-15"}},"coauthors":{"8359":{"authorid":8359,"grantid":4859,"firstname":"Margaret","middleinitial":"A.","lastname":"Post","authortype":"PI","percenteffort":null,"sameschoolflag":1,"facultyid":"C70237395","primaryunitid":17},"8360":{"authorid":8360,"grantid":4859,"firstname":"Elizabeth","middleinitial":"","lastname":"Boris","authortype":"CoPI","percenteffort":null,"sameschoolflag":0,"facultyid":null,"primaryunitid":null}},"status":[{"grantid":4859,"status":"Funded - In Progress","statuslabel":"Funded - In Progress","term":"Fall","year":2024,"termid":"2024/01","listingorder":3,"completionorder":5}],"userid":"C70237395","attachments":[],"sort_date":"2026-11-14"},{"activityid":1013,"fields":{"Title":"Evaluating Community Power to Build Health Equity ","Sponsor":"Robert Wood Johnson Foundation/ Center for Evaluation Innovation","Grant ID / Contract ID":"","Award Date":"2021-04-01","Start Date":"2021-07-01","End Date":"2024-12-31","Period Length":40,"Period Unit":"Month","Indirect Funding":1,"Indirect Cost Rate":"12","Total Funding":"240000","Total Direct Funding":"0","Currency Type":"USD","Description":"
One of four researchers awarded $3 million RWJF grant to evaluate the Foundation's "Supporting Community Power to Build Health Equity Initiative." I serve as a member of the Leadership Team and as Senior Researcher with my partners at the Center for Evaluation Innovation and Social Insights Research on this multi-year, multi-site research project.
","Abstract":"<p>One of four researchers awarded $3 million RWJF grant to evaluate the Foundation's "Supporting Community Power to Build Health Equity Initiative." While the purpose of many of these learning and evaluation projects is to justify and understand the impacts of the foundations’ investment, many funders are also motivated to develop learning and evaluation projects that add value to organizing groups and support organizers’ learning. While these funder-led and commissioned learning and evaluation projects are well-intentioned, they are often not aligned with the learning and evaluation interests and needs of organizers.
