Worcester is no stranger to these serious problems. According to a MassInc report, \\u201cThe Geography of Incarceration in a Gateway City: The Cost and Consequences of High Incarceration Rate Neighborhoods in Worcester, a total of 2,035 admissions to the Worcester House of Corrections in 2013 led to returns to the community. Neighborhoods such as Main South where poverty rates exceed 40 percent, bore the burden of mass incarceration including reentry challenges. Within one year after release 60-70% of formerly incarcerated people in Massachusetts remain unemployed (National Law Project). Without social and economic opportunities, more than 50% of released parolees become unemployed and homeless within a year of release.
