urban areas, a proportion expected to rise to two-thirds by 2050. Closer to home, the 2020 U.S. Census identifies Worcester as the fastest growing city in New England. This rapid urbanization is causing dramatic changes to our land use and watersheds. Urban environments are an increasingly important focus in research, restoration, planning, and climate justice. Ecosystem services provided by urban greenspace (e.g., tree canopy cover) and bluespace (streams and water bodies) include climate regulation (e.g., buffering urban heat), water quality regulation, flood mitigation, biodiversity benefits, landscape connectivity, and cultural services such as recreation and sense of place. Urban watersheds are also sites of injustice, reflecting historical inequities. This is true in Worcester, since as the headwaters of the Blackstone River and an anchor of the American industrial revolution, the city has a legacy of unevenly distributed environmental benefits and risks, including lower tree canopy cover, increased flood risk, industrial waste, poor air and water quality, and associated human health impacts. Urban watershed restoration is a unique challenge that requires not only the recovery of ecological functions, but also of social value and justice. In this context, and facing limitations vis-\\u00e0-vis budgets, personnel and in-house expertise, civil society groups, NGOs and municipal agencies are frequently looking to partner with university researchers and students for assistance in envisioning, planning and advancing urban environmental stewardship, community engagement, and restoration goals.

In response to such challenges, there is intensifying research and policy attention as well as strong student activism in these urgent themes. The rise of university courses, projects, and even federally funded long-term ecological research (LTER) programs on urban environments (e.g., Central Arizona-Phoenix LTER<\\\/a>), especially since the 1990s, is an indicator of this urgency and interest, and associated with novel opportunities for funding and partnerships. Despite expanding curriculums in urban environmental issues, most programs insufficiently integrate rigorous research, immersive field experience, and service learning. The need for innovative pedagogical models that integrate research, teaching and service for participatory urban ecological restoration and resiliency has never been stronger.<\\\/em>

<\\\/strong>We propose an innovative model for student immersive research, community\\\/policy partnership and service learning through engagement with an urban stream restoration project in Worcester. <\\\/strong>This project builds upon strong community partnerships and teaching on urban watersheds in Worcester by Roy Chowdhury (Geography), and upon the Human Environment Research Observatory (HERO), Clark\\u2019s summer undergraduate research program co-directed by Rogan (Geography). It additionally leverages the networks, expertise and stewardship mandate of Covino (G.P. Marsh Institute), the inaugural Blackstone Watershed Program Manager. It further strengthens the collaborations each team member has built over the years with Mass Audubon\\u2019s Broad Meadow Brook urban wildlife sanctuary.<\\\/p>\",\"Number of Periods\":1,\"URL\":\"\"},\"facultyid\":\"C08281326\",\"funding\":{\"4915\":{\"id\":4915,\"grantid\":2745,\"fundedamount\":\"19855\",\"yearfunded\":1,\"fundedtype\":\"Total\",\"currencytype\":\"USD\",\"startdate\":\"2022-01-01\",\"enddate\":\"2023-01-01\"}},\"coauthors\":{\"4437\":{\"authorid\":4437,\"grantid\":2745,\"firstname\":\"Rinku\",\"middleinitial\":\"\",\"lastname\":\"Roy Chowdhury\",\"authortype\":\"PI\",\"percenteffort\":null,\"sameschoolflag\":1,\"facultyid\":\"C08281326\",\"primaryunitid\":14},\"4438\":{\"authorid\":4438,\"grantid\":2745,\"firstname\":\"John\",\"middleinitial\":\"\",\"lastname\":\"Rogan\",\"authortype\":\"CoInvestigator\",\"percenteffort\":null,\"sameschoolflag\":1,\"facultyid\":\"C17431307\",\"primaryunitid\":14},\"4439\":{\"authorid\":4439,\"grantid\":2745,\"firstname\":\"Stefanie\",\"middleinitial\":\"\",\"lastname\":\"Covino\",\"authortype\":\"CoInvestigator\",\"percenteffort\":null,\"sameschoolflag\":0,\"facultyid\":null,\"primaryunitid\":null}},\"status\":[{\"grantid\":2745,\"status\":\"Completed\",\"statuslabel\":\"Completed\",\"term\":\"Fall\",\"year\":2022,\"termid\":\"2022\\\/01\",\"listingorder\":4,\"completionorder\":6}],\"userid\":\"C08281326\",\"attachments\":[],\"sort_date\":\"2022-12-31\"},{\"activityid\":2746,\"fields\":{\"Title\":\"Food Studies Undergraduate Concentration Development\",\"Sponsor\":\"Provost's Innovation Fund Award\",\"Grant ID \\\/ Contract ID\":\"\",\"Award Date\":\"2021-12-20\",\"Start Date\":\"2022-01-01\",\"End Date\":\"2022-12-30\",\"Period Length\":1,\"Period Unit\":\"Year\",\"Indirect Funding\":0,\"Indirect Cost Rate\":null,\"Total Funding\":\"20000\",\"Total Direct Funding\":null,\"Currency Type\":\"USD\",\"Description\":\"\",\"Abstract\":\"
Food is fundamental to life and livelihoods, and has shaped our economies, cultures, health, landscapes and environments for millennia. According to the World Bank (2018) and ILOSTAT databases, over one billion people globally work in agriculture, accounting for more than one quarter of all employment worldwide. Throughout history, food and farming have altered and been transformed by the earth\\u2019s environment and societies in the most profound ways, and struggles over food security and sovereignty are a source of continued debate and action from local to global scales. Food insecurity, the absence of reliable access to affordable and nutritious food, is on the rise among rural and urban populations in the developing countries and the developed world, the US being an important case in point. Currently, food systems and food insecurity are marked by chronic pressures as well as episodic shocks, including the risk of yield losses or due to climate variability and change, land and soil degradation, insecure land tenure and livelihoods, fluctuating food prices, and trade agreements.\\u00a0 The loss of incomes due to economic recession of global pandemics such as COVID-19, new opportunities and uncertainties introduced by agri-biotechnologies, bottlenecks and monopolistic trends in food processing and distribution, shifting nutritional guidelines and standards, and myriad other challenges can affect the global food market. Food insecurity, of course, also reflects racism and other underlying structures of social inequality.

Paralleling the criticality and massive transformations of food systems, university programs in food studies have expanded over the past few years, especially since the 1990s and 2000s. At Clark, several important courses dealing with aspects of food and agriculture have been added in the past few years. Student demand for such curriculum is strong, as demonstrated by high enrollments in our current food-related courses, as well as the many student organizations at Clark who support this proposal, including Challah for Hunger (Geoghegan faculty advisor), the Clark Sustainability Action committee (coordinated by Jenny Isler), as well as other student organizations, including ClarkU Bee Keepers and ClarkU MassPirg. \\u00a0In addition, many of our students volunteer, intern, or work for local and regional food-based organizations, nonprofits and networks in Worcester. Despite these developments, we continue to lack a formal academic program in Food Studies, which hinders our ability to meet current demand, as well as our ability to recruit students interested in Food Studies. <\\\/em>Such a program is essential to attract and enable students interested in Food Studies to get interdisciplinary, innovative and rigorous training in diverse dimensions of food systems. We propose to design an Undergraduate Concentration in Food Studies to fill this gap, and to catalyze intellectual excitement and community engagement through related programming and events.

<\\\/strong>Such a program has strong relevance and synergies with emerging institutional priorities at Clark. This includes synergies with our cross-cutting priorities taking shape on Research, Interdisciplinary Infrastructure, and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. It also connects strongly with key thematic areas linked to recently commenced faculty caucuses (Climate Change<\\\/em>, Social and Urban Issues<\\\/em>, Science and Health<\\\/em>). By providing interdisciplinary training to students in foundational and advanced topics in Food Studies and connecting them with key faculty conducting research and praxis in the field, we will prepare students for proficiency in interdisciplinary food studies research, and\\\/or how to translate such research into policy and practice. Several of the program\\u2019s proposed courses include a strong focus on food insecurity, structural inequality, and scientific literacy; the program will train students to analyze, problematize and seek ways to address challenges in diversity, equity and inclusion in food systems (and food studies), to understand the particular contexts of urban food system resilience and (in)security, and strongly leverage and expand faculty and student collaborations with local partners and institutions in Worcester, such as the Regional Environmental Council, The Worcester Regional Food Hub, the US Department of Agriculture and Worcester County Soil Conservation District, and others. \\u00a0\\u00a0<\\\/p>\",\"Number of Periods\":1,\"URL\":\"\"},\"facultyid\":\"C08281326\",\"funding\":{\"4916\":{\"id\":4916,\"grantid\":2746,\"fundedamount\":\"20000\",\"yearfunded\":1,\"fundedtype\":\"Total\",\"currencytype\":\"USD\",\"startdate\":\"2022-01-01\",\"enddate\":\"2023-01-01\"}},\"coauthors\":{\"4440\":{\"authorid\":4440,\"grantid\":2746,\"firstname\":\"Jacqueline\",\"middleinitial\":\"M.\",\"lastname\":\"Geoghegan\",\"authortype\":\"CoPI\",\"percenteffort\":null,\"sameschoolflag\":1,\"facultyid\":\"C06321320\",\"primaryunitid\":11},\"4441\":{\"authorid\":4441,\"grantid\":2746,\"firstname\":\"Rinku\",\"middleinitial\":\"\",\"lastname\":\"Roy Chowdhury\",\"authortype\":\"CoPI\",\"percenteffort\":null,\"sameschoolflag\":1,\"facultyid\":\"C08281326\",\"primaryunitid\":14},\"4442\":{\"authorid\":4442,\"grantid\":2746,\"firstname\":\"Don\",\"middleinitial\":\"E.\",\"lastname\":\"Spratt\",\"authortype\":\"CoPI\",\"percenteffort\":null,\"sameschoolflag\":1,\"facultyid\":\"C70230467\",\"primaryunitid\":9}},\"status\":[{\"grantid\":2746,\"status\":\"Funded - In Progress\",\"statuslabel\":\"Funded - In Progress\",\"term\":\"Spring\",\"year\":2023,\"termid\":\"2022\\\/03\",\"listingorder\":3,\"completionorder\":5}],\"userid\":\"C08281326\",\"attachments\":[],\"sort_date\":\"2022-12-30\"},{\"activityid\":2747,\"fields\":{\"Title\":\"Priming Bold Clark-UNAM Co-Creation of Climate-Change Education & cities have now become more similar to each other than to the native ecosystems that they replaced. This research builds on the team's prior NSF funded research on the "ecological homogenization of the American Residential Macrosystem (ARM)" and specifically investigates factors that contribute to stability and\\\/or changes in the ARM. The aim is to determine how factors that effect change, such as shifts in human demographics, desires for biodiversity and water conservation, regulations that govern water use and quality, and dispersal of organisms, will interact with factors that contribute to stability such as social norms, property values, neighborhood and city covenants and laws, and commercial interests. The project will determine ecological implications of alternative futures of the ARM for the assembly of ecological communities, ecosystem function, and responses to environmental change and disturbance at parcel (ecosystem), landscape (city), regional (Metropolitan Statistical Area) and continental scales. Five types of residential parcels as well as embedded semi-natural interstitial ecosystems will be studied, across six U.S. cities (Boston, Baltimore, Miami, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Phoenix, and Los Angeles). Education and outreach work will focus on K-12 teachers and students and on collaborative policy efforts with city, county, and state environmental managers.<\\\/span>

This project investigates urbanization's impact on the ecological homogenization of the American Residential Macrosystem (ARM) in terms of plant biodiversity, soil carbon and nitrogen cycle pools and processes, microclimate, hydrography, and land cover. This similarity of ecological characteristics is driven by complex and dynamic human actions at multiple scales--e.g., parcel, neighborhood, and region--that will shape the structure and function of the ARM over 50 to 100 year time frames, with potentially significant continental scale effects on ecological processes and environmental quality. This research addresses two core questions. First, what factors contribute to maintenance and change in the ARM? While this macrosystem is a relatively homogeneous mixture of grass lawns, shrubs, trees and impervious surfaces, there is a critical need to determine how drivers of change such as shifts in human population and ethnicity, increasing desires for biodiversity and water conservation, and regulations governing water use and quality will interact with stabilizing factors such as social norms, property values, neighborhood and city covenants and laws, and commercial interests. Researchers will test the hypothesis that that although dispersal from natural and interstitial areas, climate change, and changes in homeowner knowledge will promote ecological change; institutions, norms and values will function as counteracting, stabilizing forces on these ecological dynamics. This hypothesis will be tested by evaluating the factors that motivate change and stability at multiple scales. Results will be used to produce quantitative, data-based scenarios of future land-use patterns in the ARM. Second, what are the ecological implications of alternative futures of this macrosystem for community assembly and ecosystem function at parcel (ecosystem), landscape (city), regional (Metropolitan Statistical Area), and continental scales? The hypothesis to be tested is that management that promotes nutrient- and water-use efficient and wildlife-supporting plants as well as lower inputs of water and nutrients will give rise to greater regional biodiversity across trophic levels, higher nutrient retention, lower water use, and reduced runoff and losses of soil carbon and nitrogen from residential yards at the regional scale. Five types of residential parcels that vary in management goals and intensity and embedded semi-natural interstitial ecosystems will be studied in six U.S. cities across the U.S. (Boston, Baltimore, Miami, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Phoenix, and Los Angeles), to quantify influences on ecological dynamics. This information will be linked to land use scenarios to address the regional and continental-scale impacts of these effects. Three postdocs will be mentored as co-investigators on this project. The research program will also include interaction with municipal decision makers focused on sustainability and add a new "Panel of Experts" feature to the YardMap citizen science program developed at Cornell University.<\\\/span><\\\/p>\",\"Number of Periods\":4,\"URL\":\"\"},\"facultyid\":\"C08281326\",\"funding\":{\"1979\":{\"id\":1979,\"grantid\":1071,\"fundedamount\":\"64849\",\"yearfunded\":1,\"fundedtype\":\"Total\",\"currencytype\":\"USD\",\"startdate\":\"2017-01-01\",\"enddate\":\"2018-01-01\"},\"1980\":{\"id\":1980,\"grantid\":1071,\"fundedamount\":\"156072\",\"yearfunded\":2,\"fundedtype\":\"Total\",\"currencytype\":\"USD\",\"startdate\":\"2018-01-01\",\"enddate\":\"2019-01-01\"},\"1981\":{\"id\":1981,\"grantid\":1071,\"fundedamount\":\"65388\",\"yearfunded\":3,\"fundedtype\":\"Total\",\"currencytype\":\"USD\",\"startdate\":\"2019-01-01\",\"enddate\":\"2020-01-01\"},\"1982\":{\"id\":1982,\"grantid\":1071,\"fundedamount\":\"53236\",\"yearfunded\":4,\"fundedtype\":\"Total\",\"currencytype\":\"USD\",\"startdate\":\"2020-01-01\",\"enddate\":\"2021-01-01\"},\"1983\":{\"id\":1983,\"grantid\":1071,\"fundedamount\":\"43147\",\"yearfunded\":1,\"fundedtype\":\"Direct\",\"currencytype\":\"USD\",\"startdate\":\"2017-01-01\",\"enddate\":\"2018-01-01\"},\"1984\":{\"id\":1984,\"grantid\":1071,\"fundedamount\":\"103840\",\"yearfunded\":2,\"fundedtype\":\"Direct\",\"currencytype\":\"USD\",\"startdate\":\"2018-01-01\",\"enddate\":\"2019-01-01\"},\"1985\":{\"id\":1985,\"grantid\":1071,\"fundedamount\":\"43505\",\"yearfunded\":3,\"fundedtype\":\"Direct\",\"currencytype\":\"USD\",\"startdate\":\"2019-01-01\",\"enddate\":\"2020-01-01\"},\"1986\":{\"id\":1986,\"grantid\":1071,\"fundedamount\":\"35420\",\"yearfunded\":4,\"fundedtype\":\"Direct\",\"currencytype\":\"USD\",\"startdate\":\"2020-01-01\",\"enddate\":\"2021-01-01\"}},\"coauthors\":{\"1683\":{\"authorid\":1683,\"grantid\":1071,\"firstname\":\"Rinku\",\"middleinitial\":\"\",\"lastname\":\"Roy Chowdhury\",\"authortype\":\"CoInvestigator\",\"percenteffort\":\"100\",\"sameschoolflag\":1,\"facultyid\":\"C08281326\",\"primaryunitid\":14}},\"status\":[{\"grantid\":1071,\"status\":\"Funded - In Progress\",\"statuslabel\":\"Funded - In Progress\",\"term\":\"Summer\",\"year\":2020,\"termid\":\"2019\\\/05\",\"listingorder\":3,\"completionorder\":5}],\"userid\":\"C08281326\",\"attachments\":[],\"sort_date\":\"2021-12-31\"},{\"activityid\":1072,\"fields\":{\"Title\":\"SRS RN: Social-environmental homogenization, vulnerability and stress along urban to rural gradients in the continental U.S.\",\"Sponsor\":\"NSF\",\"Grant ID \\\/ Contract ID\":\"\",\"Award Date\":null,\"Start Date\":\"2021-07-01\",\"End Date\":null,\"Period Length\":1,\"Period Unit\":\"Year\",\"Indirect Funding\":1,\"Indirect Cost Rate\":\"50.3\",\"Total Funding\":\"499619\",\"Total Direct Funding\":\"348479\",\"Currency Type\":\"USD\",\"Description\":\"\",\"Abstract\":\"
Overview:<\\\/span><\\\/p>\\n
The overarching objective of the proposed research is the development of a Community Model of Regional Sustainability to understand vulnerabilities of human-environment interactions to social and<\\\/span> environmental shocks along urban-rural gradients. Three platforms for convergent research will be<\\\/span> established in seven Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) regional systems in the U.S.: Boston, New<\\\/span> York, Baltimore, Miami, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Phoenix, and Los Angeles. The three platforms for<\\\/span> integrative SRS research include: 1) Networks of stakeholders, students and researchers for participatory<\\\/span> research. 2) Data synthesis to understand drivers, dynamics, and interactions among natural, human-built,<\\\/span> and social systems in urban-rural regions as they impact multiple sustainability outcomes across scales. 3)<\\\/span> Field research to investigate mechanisms underlying sustainable regional systems and their<\\\/span> vulnerabilities. Data from these three platforms will be integrated for the development of the Community<\\\/span> Model of Regional Sustainability in a process inspired by the development of the Community Earth<\\\/span> System Models by the climate research community. The project will begin with identification of key<\\\/span> stakeholder groups associated with environmental quality and justice, infrastructure, and design using<\\\/span> machine-learning based governance analysis. Engagement with these groups will center on three<\\\/span> questions: 1) What are the vulnerabilities? 2) What are the opportunities? 3) What factors should be<\\\/span> incorporated into a Community Model of Regional Sustainability? These stakeholders will engage in<\\\/span> participatory research networks with students and researchers within and across regional systems. A<\\\/span> primary task will be to examine how social-environmental systems in each region have responded to<\\\/span> economic shocks, climate extremes, and disease shocks over the past 25 years. Responses in engineered,<\\\/span> environmental, and social domains will be analyzed to quantify spatial and temporal patterns of<\\\/span> vulnerability and resilience in each region. New field research will focus on how "green infrastructure",<\\\/span> here broadly defined to encompass a wide range of unmanaged natural to highly designed and engineered<\\\/span> systems, potentially creates new sources of vulnerability and inequity within regional systems. The<\\\/span> Community Model of Regional Sustainability will highlight the environmental, demographic, socioeconomic and equity-related datasets that need to be assembled to track changes in vulnerability and<\\\/span> sustainability within a region and will be refined through workshops with stakeholders and researchers<\\\/span> from other Sustainable Regional Systems Research Network projects in a series of open community<\\\/span> meetings.<\\\/span><\\\/p>\\n
Intellectual Merit:<\\\/span><\\\/p>\\n
Unprecedented levels of climate, economic, and disease stresses, compounded by social inequities, over<\\\/span> he past 25 years have revealed great challenges for Sustainability Science. The proposed research is<\\\/span> based on a conceptual model of sustainable regional systems centered on human: environment<\\\/span> interactions along urban to rural gradients. Positive and negative interactions between humans and the<\\\/span> environment are constrained by overarching controls, including population, economy, technology,<\\\/span> governance and equity on the human side and climate, species, topography, time and geology on the environmental side. These in turn influence green, built and social infrastructure. The overarching controls and interactions together regulate the nature and extent of vulnerability to stress of both humans and the environment. These dynamics are expressed differently in urban, suburban, exurban and rural<\\\/span> components of the regional system, with feedbacks across the gradient. Many of these interactions are currently unknown and quantitative development of a Community Model of Regional Sustainability will be an ongoing process that will incorporate diverse stakeholder input.<\\\/span><\\\/p>\\n
Broader Impacts:<\\\/span><\\\/p>\\n
The proposed research will begin with a comprehensive analysis of, and engagement with a wide range of<\\\/span> stakeholder groups in seven regions across the U.S. This engagement will lead to co-produced,<\\\/span> participatory research projects with a group of 35 students who will participate in a multi-site course that<\\\/span> will serve as a platform for ongoing engagement between stakeholders and students across the seven<\\\/span> regions.
