This book showcases an intertwined group of seven influential women, from well-known figures such as Simone Veil to memory activist Sabine Zlatin, who shaped the production of Holocaust memory in France from 1945 to the present. Her second book project, <em>Afterlife of the Sacred: Holocaust Museums and American Jewish Identity<\/em>, is under contract with Purdue University Press. This book is co-authored by sociologist Jonathan Zisook (University of Pittsburgh). <em>Afterlife of the Sacred<\/em>\u00a0considers the transnational impact of Holocaust memory through a cutting-edge, interdisciplinary study of sacred objects in regional Holocaust museums.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:12pt;color:#000000\">In addition to these book-length projects, Valanzola has published articles in <em>Holocaust and Genocide Studies<\/em>, <em>Jewish Social Studies<\/em>, and the\u00a0<em>Review of Education, Pedagogy and Cultural Studies<\/em>, with a forthcoming co-authored article in <em>Southern Jewish History<\/em>\u00a0scheduled for publication in Fall 2026. Pulling from her recently released book, When She Remembered: Seven Women Who Transformed French Holocaust Memory, Ashley Valanzola will present the history of this city under siege from the eyes of well-known resistance fighter Denise Vernay and Holocaust survivor Simone Lagrange. Both women found themselves thrust into the hands of the country\\u2019s most brutal Gestapo agents, and both survived to preserve the memory of all that they endured. Intentionally or not, these\\u00a0&lt;br&gt;sites exist in conversation with an area\\u2019s local history and residents, reflecting their priorities, politics, and aspirations. Two case studies of\\u00a0&lt;br&gt;memorial efforts in Charleston, South Carolina, and Whitwell, Tennessee,\\u00a0&lt;br&gt;embody the complexity and continuing evolution of Holocaust memory.\\u00a0 \\u00a0This study of both sites brings to light important themes for understanding Holocaust\\u00a0&lt;br&gt;memory in the American South, foremost among them the presence of religious and racial tensions. In both locations, expanding Holocaust\\u00a0&lt;br&gt;education and creating a memorial space positively impacted the local\\u00a0&lt;br&gt;community. Yet, as with other physical memorials, the meaning and purpose of these sites gradually evolved. The Whitwell project shifted away\\u00a0&lt;br&gt;from a drive to educate and memorialize into an effort to promote a certain image of the town. Simultaneously, the Charleston Holocaust\\u00a0&lt;br&gt;Memorial has become something of a barometer for the worries of a small\\u00a0&lt;br&gt;Jewish community in our troubled present.
