She employs applied econometrics and machine learning methods to analyze large-scale datasets to gain a better understanding of business and individual behavior and its theoretical foundation, providing insights to inform theories and decision-makers in the areas of environmental and sustainable development, and healthcare management. Gao has presented her work at various academic conferences, including International Conferences on Digital Government Research, Decision Sciences Institute Annual Conferences, the Association of Environmental and Resources Economists Annual Summer Conferences, and INFORMS Annual Meetings. In addition to working as a researcher in the U.S. Census \u2013 Boston Research Data Center, she has taught Financial Econometrics, Machine Learning, Options, Futures, and Other Derivatives, and Investment strategies at the School of Management of Clark University since 2018. A key technological piece of a smart grid is the smart meter that allows two-way communication between consumers and utility companies. This paper uses a simultaneous equation approach to study the impacts of federal funding on smart meter adoption and utilities\\u2019 performance in the U.S residential sector. Our findings suggest that the federal funding is a stimulus inducing smart meter adoption that allows for improved energy efficiency and reduced peak load demands.
