This project will build on ongoing collaboration between the University of Vermont and the University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez, and
will add the expertise of and build on existing work of Clark University. Specifically, we will be looking at the potential of anchor institutions to contribute to community and food system resilience, with particular focus on workforce and market development. The overarching goal of this seed grant project is to develop a comprehensive research, education and outreach plan to enhance the capacity of anchor institutions in Puerto Rico and New England to
contribute to community and food system resilience, with particular focus on workforce and market development. The seed funds will be used to convene a Project Advisory Team in each region to guide and vet research and outreach plan development; document the current assets, state of knowledge, and
knowledge gaps around workforce and market development for anchor institutions (on both the
supply and demand side); then craft a research and outreach plan which will fill knowledge gaps, leverage assets, and develop outreach programming to assist producers and institutions. This project address the following program Priority Area: \\u201cExamine the potential for various constellations of business\\\/industry investment, development of labor supply, education and training
resources, and cultural resources to enhance the human capital of the labor supply to produce sustainable regional economic growth.\\u201d<\\\/p>\",\"Number of Periods\":1,\"URL\":\"\"},\"facultyid\":\"C70192148\",\"funding\":{\"5073\":{\"id\":5073,\"grantid\":564,\"fundedamount\":\"0\",\"yearfunded\":1,\"fundedtype\":\"Total\",\"currencytype\":\"USD\",\"startdate\":\"2021-01-01\",\"enddate\":\"2022-01-01\"},\"5074\":{\"id\":5074,\"grantid\":564,\"fundedamount\":\"0\",\"yearfunded\":1,\"fundedtype\":\"Direct\",\"currencytype\":\"USD\",\"startdate\":\"2021-01-01\",\"enddate\":\"2022-01-01\"}},\"coauthors\":{\"4598\":{\"authorid\":4598,\"grantid\":564,\"firstname\":\"Ramon\",\"middleinitial\":\"\",\"lastname\":\"Borges-Mendez\",\"authortype\":\"CoPI\",\"percenteffort\":null,\"sameschoolflag\":1,\"facultyid\":\"C70192148\",\"primaryunitid\":17},\"4599\":{\"authorid\":4599,\"grantid\":564,\"firstname\":\"David\",\"middleinitial\":\"\",\"lastname\":\"Conner\",\"authortype\":\"PI\",\"percenteffort\":null,\"sameschoolflag\":0,\"facultyid\":null,\"primaryunitid\":null},\"4600\":{\"authorid\":4600,\"grantid\":564,\"firstname\":\"Travis\",\"middleinitial\":\"\",\"lastname\":\"Reynolds\",\"authortype\":\"CoPI\",\"percenteffort\":null,\"sameschoolflag\":0,\"facultyid\":null,\"primaryunitid\":null},\"4601\":{\"authorid\":4601,\"grantid\":564,\"firstname\":\"Jane\",\"middleinitial\":\"\",\"lastname\":\"Kolodinsky\",\"authortype\":\"CoPI\",\"percenteffort\":null,\"sameschoolflag\":0,\"facultyid\":null,\"primaryunitid\":null},\"4602\":{\"authorid\":4602,\"grantid\":564,\"firstname\":\"Cynthia\",\"middleinitial\":\"\",\"lastname\":\"Caron\",\"authortype\":\"CoPI\",\"percenteffort\":null,\"sameschoolflag\":0,\"facultyid\":null,\"primaryunitid\":null},\"4603\":{\"authorid\":4603,\"grantid\":564,\"firstname\":\"Morgan\",\"middleinitial\":\"\",\"lastname\":\"Ruelle\",\"authortype\":\"CoPI\",\"percenteffort\":null,\"sameschoolflag\":0,\"facultyid\":null,\"primaryunitid\":null},\"4604\":{\"authorid\":4604,\"grantid\":564,\"firstname\":\"Yelena\",\"middleinitial\":\"\",\"lastname\":\"Ogneva-Himmelberger\",\"authortype\":\"CoPI\",\"percenteffort\":null,\"sameschoolflag\":0,\"facultyid\":null,\"primaryunitid\":null},\"4605\":{\"authorid\":4605,\"grantid\":564,\"firstname\":\"Robinson\",\"middleinitial\":\"\",\"lastname\":\"Rodriguez\",\"authortype\":\"CoPI\",\"percenteffort\":null,\"sameschoolflag\":0,\"facultyid\":null,\"primaryunitid\":null}},\"status\":[{\"grantid\":564,\"status\":\"Completed\",\"statuslabel\":\"Completed\",\"term\":\"Spring\",\"year\":2023,\"termid\":\"2022\\\/03\",\"listingorder\":4,\"completionorder\":6}],\"userid\":\"C70192148\",\"attachments\":[],\"sort_date\":\"2021-12-31\"},{\"activityid\":563,\"fields\":{\"Title\":\"Urbanization and Sprawl in Second-Tier Cities of Sri Lanka: The Cases of Galle and Matara.\",\"Sponsor\":\"Fulbright Scholar Program\",\"Grant ID \\\/ Contract ID\":\"\",\"Award Date\":\"2020-05-15\",\"Start Date\":\"2021-02-01\",\"End Date\":\"2021-07-01\",\"Period Length\":1,\"Period Unit\":\"Year\",\"Indirect Funding\":0,\"Indirect Cost Rate\":null,\"Total Funding\":\"0\",\"Total Direct Funding\":null,\"Currency Type\":\"USD\",\"Description\":\"\",\"Abstract\":\"
Sri Lanka is the most rural country of South Asia although urbanizing fast. We will use participatory research techniques with displaced people and others to identify community assets, opportunities, needs and barriers to recovery. We anticipate that resettlement and reconstruction are a high priority, so an important focus will be a participatory design of new settlement areas and residential structures. An important part of this process will be to identify and connect with individuals and institutions that can contribute knowledge and experience to community-driven recovery efforts. In addition, participatory research will consider the resilience and sustainability of new physical and social infrastructures. We will take stock of vulnerabilities exacerbated by natural hazards and explore possibilities to enhance community resilience via participatory tools including but not limited to transect walks, ecological calendars and asset mapping that will help displaced families envision new living and working arrangements. The community is located in a mountainous tropical-cool forest ecosystem with many opportunities for sustainable livelihood activities, including shade-grown coffee production, bamboo forestry, and agro-ecotourism. Our research will investigate local ecological knowledge that might contribute to reconstruction and longer-term community development. Research will recommend strategies to develop new livelihood opportunities and slow depopulation in this and other rural municipalities in Puerto Rico.<\\\/p>\\n
<\\\/p>\\n
[1]<\\\/span><\\\/a> FB is an officially designated Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Community Disaster Hub.<\\\/p>\\n
[2]<\\\/span><\\\/a> Participatory rural appraisal (PRA) is an interactive data collection process conducted at a community level or with a specific group of interest.
