He joined the Clark faculty in the autumn of 2008.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Garton&#8217;s interests include Renaissance and Baroque art, Latin-American Art and modern architecture. His scholarly research has focused on European portraiture, Venetian art and architecture, Renaissance engineering and designed landscapes. Occasionally he publishes on Pre-Columbian subjects, a secondary area of study.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Garton teaches lecture courses on Renaissance and Baroque art and Latin-American Art. His upper-level courses include Art, the Public, and the History of Worcester (ARTH 201), The Art of Art History: Teaching and Methods (ARTH 210), both required for the art history major, and seminars on Leonardo da Vinci, Caravaggio and Pre-Columbian Art &amp; Architecture.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Garton is currently completing a book-length, multi-author study of the Renaissance designed landscape and statuary of Vicino Orsini&#8217;s<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>sacro bosco<\/em><span>\u00a0<\/span>in Bomarzo, Italy (1552-ca.1585). From digital billboards to locative apps, the augmentation of space is no longer science fiction, but fact. The artists in this panel see the potential in these developments as sites for a new kind of democratic placemaking rooted in shared history, ecology, and community. The artists\\\/researchers in this panel will each discuss projects that use emerging digital technologies to explore sites of historic, cultural, and ecological significance. Moreover, moving beyond (or below) nationalistic or corporate-driven narratives, the artists on this panel mine cultural history and activate communities around the tragedies and triumphs of the past as well as the possibilities of the future. In each case, community stakeholders are invited to participate in novel modes of discovery of place, of history, and of each other. The works, which integrate live performance, interactivity, and digital spectacle also represent a constellation of media and voice. There are now numerous accounts of the Sacro Bosco, ranging from the biographical to the alchemical, but still no consensus about its purpose and meaning. A significant obstacle to our understanding of the Sacro Bosco is the lack of physical and spatial data about the site. For example, it has never been the subject of a systematic scientific survey. This lecture will introduce our project to undertake a digital topographic survey of the landscape of the Sacro Bosco, LiDAR scanning of individual sculptures, and the reconstruction of the waterworks and related infrastructure. The lecture will also consider the implications of new digital technologies of analysis and representation for the interpretation of historical designed landscapes. \",\"Include description in output
