{"id":345,"date":"2024-12-12T10:31:14","date_gmt":"2024-12-12T15:31:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.golive.clarku.edu\/faculty\/profiles\/thomas-del-prete\/"},"modified":"2026-04-05T09:35:51","modified_gmt":"2026-04-05T13:35:51","slug":"thomas-del-prete","status":"publish","type":"cu_faculty","link":"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/faculty\/profiles\/thomas-del-prete\/","title":{"rendered":"Thomas Del Prete"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Professor Del Prete has been Director of the\u00a0Adam Institute for Urban Teaching and School Practice\u00a0since\u00a02012.\u00a0 Previously, he was Director of the Hiatt Center for Urban Education (1998-2012) and\u00a0Chair of the Education Department (1996-2012).\u00a0 A graduate of Brown University, and a former secondary teacher in History and English, he earned his doctorate from Harvard University, concentrating on teaching, learning, and curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Del Prete founded and\u00a0supports the\u00a0continuing development of\u00a0Clark&#8217;s\u00a0partner school collaborative, including the Goddard,\u00a0Hiatt, and Woodland\u00a0elementary schools and\u00a0Claremont Academy, South High and University Park Campus\u00a0School.\u00a0 The partner school collaborative is dedicated to the joint development of learning cultures and practices that serve the students in &#8220;Main South,&#8221; a diverse and low income area of Worcester.\u00a0 Likewise, the partnership is committed to developing exemplary models of urban teacher preparation, professional development and school reform, and to learning from the effort.\u00a0 Professor Del Prete developed the &#8220;rounds&#8221; model, a classroom-based collaborative learning model for teachers, as well as the curriculum team model that bridges and integrates arts and sciences and practitioner perspectives &#8212; two signature\u00a0programs.\u00a0 For a number of years he served as co-chair of the\u00a0partnership History Curriculum Team.<\/p>\n<p>In pursuing the partnership work, Professor Del Prete has been awarded grants from the federal Department of Education, the Massachusetts State Department of Education, the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education, and national and local private foundations.\u00a0 Most recently, he received a grant from the Greater Worcester Community Foundation to support development of the\u00a0Main South\u00a0College Success Program, a neighborhood- and school-based effort to maximize support for first-generation college students.\u00a0 He is an original and continuing member of the steering committee for University Park Campus School.\u00a0 He received the Thomas Jefferson award from the Worcester Public Schools for his service to University Park Campus School in 1999, and the John W. Lund Community Achievement award at Clark in 2000.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Del Prete&#8217;s interests include university-school partnerships, models of urban teacher education,\u00a0secondary school reform, history curriculum and learning, and spirituality and education.\u00a0 He has been recognized for his scholarship on Thomas Merton and education.\u00a0 His book<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>Thomas Merton and the Education of the Whole Person<\/em><span>\u00a0<\/span>earned the first scholarship award given by the International Thomas Merton Society in 1991.\u00a0 He has published about twenty articles and reviews in Merton studies.\u00a0 He was elected President of the International Thomas Merton Society for a two year term in 1997.
