Professor Yelena Ogneva-Himmelberger joined the faculty in 2006 after several years of teaching GIS and remote sensing at Mount Holyoke College and Tufts University. She received Ph.D. from Clark University, and B.A.\/M.A. degrees in Geography with distinction from Moscow State University. <\/p>\n

This region encompasses 210 municipalities, covering approximately 31,305 square kilometers, with a total population of 23+ million people. It supplies water to the Mexico City Metropolitan Area, which has been experiencing water scarcity for decades.<\\\/p>\\n<p>The project employs geospatial analysis to identify areas projected to experience the largest decreases in precipitation or increases in temperature under different climate change scenarios (SS2 and SS5 for 2041-2060 and 2081-2100). Climate projection data from two sources, CORDEX and CHELSEA, will be mapped and compared. Additionally, the project will analyze the spatial distribution of social vulnerability indices produced by Mexican government agencies (CONAGUA and CONEVAL) to identify spatial clusters of the most socially vulnerable municipalities.<\\\/p>\\n<p>In the final step of the analysis, climate projections and social vulnerability data will be combined to pinpoint areas where high social vulnerability and the most significant negative impacts of climate change overlap. Despite this, and the harms EDCs pose to human health and the environment, EDCs and UOG are systematically difficult to study. This difficulty stems from both the inherent material qualities of EDCs and the advocacy work of the petrochemical and oil and gas industries to hide aspects of their operations from the broader public. Critical Physical Geography (CPG) highlights the political dimensions of environmental knowledge production. Here, we present a CPG analysis of the known-unknowns related to UOG production and EDCs by querying and mapping data from an industry-sponsored chemical disclosure database. We argue that because of the power-laden dynamics of UOG and EDC research, attempts to weigh the costs and benefits of UOG objectively ultimately do so with weighted scales. How do we map and model impact inequities? How do we transform governance and social learning to chart sustainable, socially just, climate-resilient pathways? We will work in a setting powerfully emblematic of the global climate and sustainability challenge - Mexico-Lerma-Cutzamala Hydrological Region (MLCHR) - where a 3-fold expansion of the water supply system for Mexico City is planned by 2050. To respond to the research challenge, our design combines four components in powerful synergy: C1) Co-creation of an open-source GIS\\\/Remote Sensing-based Regional Climate-Change Atlas; C2) Co-creation of a System Dynamics Model (SDM), informed by C1, representing interactions\\\/impacts among climate change, population, urbanization, land-use\\\/land cover change, water, ecosystems, food, health, and livelihoods; C3) Piloting of eXtended Reality (XR) policy analysis, simulating climate-change\\\/development scenarios diverse stakeholders can inhabit virtually, informed by C1 and C2; C4) Integration of research and education such that they reinforce each other. C1 and C2 reveal impact cascades and inequities by recognizing state variables are spatially explicit. We are Clark University, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), Mexico City Government and MLCHR communities.<\\\/p>\\n \\u00a0<\\\/em><\\\/p>\\n Intellectual Merit In a rapidly urbanizing, climate-changing world, inter-basin water supply megaprojects are on the rise, with huge energy, greenhouse gas, and water injustice implications. In perverse positive feedback, they increase climate change, thus increasing the water scarcity used to justify them in the first place - all the while forestalling and obscuring more sustainable alternatives. Our project uses a planned 3-fold-expansion water supply program for Mexico City as the urgent impetus to co-create a new frontier in climate-change impact science, policy analysis and education. For the first time<\\\/em>, participatory GIS and collaborative System Dynamics Modeling are paired to make impact cascades and inequities spatially explicit, then combined with eXtended Reality (XR) technology to visualize and compare alternative climate\\\/development scenarios diverse stakeholders can inhabit virtually. New co-created research-based courses for US-Mexico student cohorts and enhanced community engagement integrate research with public education. These capacities do not currently exist in Mexico or the US. Unless we co-create them with academic, policy and community partners, \\u2018business-as-usual\\u2019 development like the water expansion program will happen unchallenged, and more climate-resilient and socially just possibilities will remain invisible \\u2013 robbing us, our children and our children\\u2019s children of sustainable futures.<\\\/p>\\n \\u00a0<\\\/p>\\n Broader Impacts This is the first time GIS\\\/Remote Sensing, System Dynamics Modeling, eXtended Reality decision support and Research-Education Integration are combined to confront global societal challenges, with strong <\\\/span>multi-sectoral applications to: urban planning; economic development planning; disaster preparedness; pandemic preparedness and public health; water; energy \\u2013 even national and global security. Our social-technical enterprise (STE) celebrates and mobilizes all <\\\/em>forms of diversity demanding broad meaningful participation, including women, Indigenous groups and other minorities underrepresented in governance, research, and education (especially STEM). Therefore, globally, climate-resilient development and sustainable development will benefit from our testing of STE approaches that transform assessment and democratize governance, and that are eminently scalable, from local to regional to national and international.
