Korstvedt<\/strong> is an active researcher and scholar, a committed and enthusiastic teacher, a frequent speaker at national and international conferences, and a productive author and editor. He graduated <em>summa cum laude<\/em> from Clark University in 1987 with a B.A. in Music and received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1995. He joined the Clark faculty in 2002, where he is now Professor of Music.\u00a0 He served two terms as Chair of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/departments\/visual-and-performing-arts\/\">Department of Visual and Performing Arts<\/a>.\u00a0 He is also affiliated with Clark\u2019s programs in German Studies, Holocaust and Genocide Studies, and MCA (Media, Culture, and the Arts).\u00a0 Before coming to Clark, Professor Korstvedt held faculty positions at the University of St. Thomas, Ball State University, and the University of Iowa.\u00a0 \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/clarku.academia.edu\/BenjaminKorstvedt\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Scholarship and Research<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Professor Korstvedt publishes widely in several areas. He is a leading scholar of the great Austrian symphonist Anton Bruckner (1824-96). His work has explored the complex text-critical issues surrounding Bruckner\u2019s works, the reception of his music by critics and scholars in the Third Reich, the place of Bruckner\u2019s music in the culture of fin-de-si\u00e8cle Vienna, and the form and meaning of Bruckner\u2019s symphonies. He has published numerous articles on these topics as well as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/books\/bruckner-symphony-no-8\/18B1174FAEAC8E4341A8FAA2842E2258\">monograph on Bruckner\u2019s Eighth Symphony<\/a> that considers the history, musical design, aesthetic meaning, and performance of that great work. \u00a0His current book project is <em>Bruckner\u2019s Fourth: The Biography of a Symphony<\/em>.\u00a0 This work, which will be published in 2024, explores the long history of the Fourth Symphony starting with its extraordinarily complex compositional history and continuing through its reception by later generations as they performed and interpreted the symphony in their own ways.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Korstvedt is a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mwv.at\/en\/content\/seite\/NewAntonBrucknerCompleteEditionsince2016\/\">Editorial Board of the New Anton Bruckner Complete Edition<\/a>.\u00a0 His <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mwv.at\/english\/TextBruckner\/Katalog\/New%20Bruckner%20complete%20edition.htm\">new edition of the second version of the Fourth Symphony<\/a> was published in 2019, and received the Claude V. Palisca Award from the American Musicological Society as the outstanding scholarly edition in the field of musicology published that year. \u00a0 It has been performed by numerous leading orchestras including the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonics and the leading orchestras in Boston, Philadelphia, Munich, Amsterdam, Paris, and Zurich under the direction of Herbert Blomstedt.\u00a0 He published the first modern edition of the 1888 version of Bruckner\u2019s Fourth Symphony in 2004.\u00a0\u00a0 This version of the symphony has been performed internationally in Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, and Austria, as well as in the U.S.\u00a0 A video production of a performance by the Cleveland Orchestra, conducted by Franz Welser-M\u00f6st in the St. Florian Abbey, Austria has appeared on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clevelandorchestra.com\/news-and-updates\/news-releases\/2013-releases\/2013-04-16-bruckner-four\/\">DVD (Euroarts<\/a>).\u00a0 The Minnesota Orchestra gave the score its American premiere and recorded it on <a href=\"https:\/\/bis.se\/conductors\/vanska-osmo\/bruckner-symphony-no4-romantic\">CD under the direction of Osmo V\u00e4nsk\u00e4 in 2010<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Korstvedt also works in other areas of critical musicology.\u00a0 He is the author of a critical study of the musical aesthetics of the German Marxist philosopher Ernst Bloch (1885-1977) entitled <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/us\/academic\/subjects\/music\/twentieth-century-and-contemporary-music\/listening-utopia-ernst-blochs-musical-philosophy?format=HB\">Listening for Utopia in Ernst Bloch\u2019s Musical Philosophy<\/a><\/em> (Cambridge University Press).\u00a0\u00a0 The book, which is the first work in English to address this topic, explicates central themes of Bloch\u2019s philosophy of music and develops them through essays on works by Wagner, Mozart, Bruckner and Brahms.\u00a0 Other publications cover topics ranging from <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/mq\/article-abstract\/94\/1-2\/156\/1024616?login=false\">the role of music criticism in public discourse<\/a> to t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/books\/schuberts-late-music\/prerogative-of-late-style-thoughts-on-the-expressive-world-of-schuberts-late-works\/1985C9ABD869A396612EE84FA74FDD51\">he social character of Schubert\u2019s late style<\/a>, with new work in progress on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/centers\/higgins-school-of-humanities\/event\/declarations-of-disgust-reflections-on-an-ideological-dimension-of-music-criticism-ca-1900\/\">liberal anxieties surrounding the body as a social text<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A frequent speaker at international and national conferences and symposia, Korstvedt has been invited to present lectures and lead seminars at universities in the U.S., the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Hungary, Austria, and Italy.\u00a0 He has contributed essays to program books for performance and recordings, and given pre-concert Kilenyi Medal of Honor by the Bruckner Society of America in recognition of \u201cexemplary work in furthering the understanding and appreciation of the life and work of Anton Bruckner.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Prof. Korstvedt has recently been appointed to the Advisory Board of the <a href=\"https:\/\/iagmrsurrey.wordpress.com\/\">Institute of Austrian and German Music Research<\/a>, a forum for renewed scholarly investigation of Austrian and German musical culture based at the University of Surrey. \u00a0He has been the President of the Bruckner Society of America since 2011 and also serves on the editorial board of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/nineteenth-century-music-review\">Nineteenth-Century Music Review<\/a> (Cambridge University Press), a journal that explores music within all aspects of culture in the long nineteenth century (c.1789-1914). \u00a0He is a past member of the Council of the American Musicological Society and was the founding Vice President of the Haydn Society of North America.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Teaching<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Professor Korstvedt\u2019s teaching explores musical history and culture This research will provide the basis for a chapter of my current book project, which has the working title <em>Bruckner in Public<\\\/em> and is based around a series of critical essays on ways in which audiences have interacted with Bruckner\\u2019s music from the 1880s to the present.\",\"Abstract\":\"&lt;p&gt;The music and public images of Anton Bruckner (1824-1896) and Gustav Mahler (1860-1911), widely regarded as the preeminent Austrian symphonists of the epoch around 1900, have long been interpreted and reinterpreted in ways that reach far beyond the usual confines of musical life. This critical discourse originated in the context of the political and cultural upheavals Austria and Austrian culture underwent in the first half of the twentieth century, and as the music of both composers increasingly entered American musical life in the postwar, it was reformulated in new ways within the distinctive sociocultural milieu of the U.S. This comparative critical study of the changing views and representations of these two composers will shed light not only on their musical works but also on fundamental issues of cultural politics and changing definitions of Austrian identity.&lt;\\\/p&gt;\",\"Number of
