Thus, objective assessment of empathy is increasingly becoming a center of attention, particularly in human-centered professional domains such as healthcare. The Empathy Rating Scale (ERS) was developed to objectively measure individual empathy expression and quantitatively assess the quality of verbal empathic expression using standardized evaluation criteria.<\\\/p>\\n
Objective: <\\\/strong>This study developed and evaluated a Korean version of the ERS (K-ERS), assessing its reliability and validity in the Korean population.<\\\/p>\\n
Methods: <\\\/strong>This study was conducted in two phases. In the first phase, the ERS was forward-translated into Korean and reviewed by an expert panel. Subsequently, a back-translation process was conducted to verify the semantic, conceptual, and cultural equivalence of the translation with the original instrument, producing the K-ERS. In the second phase, the psychometric properties of the K-ERS were evaluated in a sample of 210 Korean adults. This included assessments of interrater reliability, internal consistency, concurrent validity, and construct validity.<\\\/p>\\n
Results:<\\\/strong> The K-ERS demonstrated excellent reliability, providing an intraclass correlation coefficient of 1.00 and a Cronbach\\u2019s \\u03b1 of 0.87. Concurrent validity was supported by significant positive correlations with the total score of the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (r<\\\/em> = .216, P<\\\/em> = .002) and that of the Empathy Quotient (r<\\\/em> = .155, ). Hypothesis testing for construct validity revealed significantly higher K-ERS scores in the group with a high recognition of the importance of empathy (U<\\\/em> = 1021.5, P<\\\/em> = .004) and in those with prior experience in empathetic communication (or communication) education (t <\\\/em>= 2.91, P<\\\/em> = .004). The group reporting good subjective health status tended to have higher K-ERS scores (t<\\\/em> = 1.93, P<\\\/em> = .054), and no significant differences in K-ERS scores were observed across stress levels (t<\\\/em> = .69, P<\\\/em> = .49).<\\\/p>\\n
Conclusions: <\\\/strong>This study validated the K-ERS as a reliable and valid tool for assessing the verbal expression of empathy among Korean populations. Using a rater-based objective measurement approach, the K-ERS overcomes the limitations of self-report measures, making it a practical and reliable instrument for empathy research across fields, including in healthcare settings.<\\\/p>\",\"Include description in output citation\":0,\"Origin\":\"Manual\"},\"facultyid\":\"C70327574\",\"status\":[{\"id\":13325,\"status\":\"In Progress\",\"term\":\"Spring\",\"year\":2025,\"termid\":\"2024\\\/03\",\"listingorder\":1,\"completionorder\":1}],\"userid\":\"C70327574\",\"attachments\":[],\"coauthors_list\":[\"Hyungsin Kim\",\"Yuyi Park\",\"Hakkyun Kim\"],\"sort_date\":\"2025-01-01\"},{\"activityid\":13329,\"fields\":{\"Type\":\"Articles in Refereed Journals\",\"Title\":\"A Study on Improving the User Experience of Medication Guidance in a Telemedicine Environment\",\"Journal Title\":\"Journal of Medical Internet Research\",\"Series Title\":\"\",\"Month \\\/ Season\":\"\",\"Year\":2025,\"Publisher\":\"\",\"Publisher City and State\":\"\",\"Publisher Country\":\"\",\"Volume\":\"\",\"Issue Number \\\/ Edition\":\"\",\"Page Number(s) or Number of Pages\":\"\",\"ISSN\":\"\",\"DOI\":\"\",\"CoAuthor\":null,\"URL\":\"\",\"Description\":\"
Background<\\\/b><\\\/p>\\n
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the telemedicine market has grown rapidly.
