The epistolary novel’s narrator, an American visiting Saint Domingue (colonial Haiti), yearns for the “paradise” that she imagines has been destroyed by the revolution, aligning Sansay with Paul Gilroy’s notion of postcolonial melancholia. More insidiously, in Secret History, the longing for the reinstatement of the colonial system in Saint Domingue positions people of African descent outside “frames of recognition,” as Judith Butler in Frames of War conceptualizes the way in which biopolitical forces constitute personhood. I argue that for Sansay, the norms that constitute a living being as recognizable as a life are the ideologies of Romantic settler colonialism, as well as American exceptionalism. As such, within Secret History, Sansay reifies a stratified racial and national hierarchy while also actively denying the state violence that sustains it.","Include description in output citation":0,"Origin":"Manual"},"facultyid":"C18061381","status":[{"id":7777,"status":"Completed/Published","term":"Summer","year":2024,"termid":"2023/05","listingorder":6,"completionorder":6}],"userid":"C18061381","attachments":[],"coauthors_list":["Lisa Kasmer"],"sort_date":"2024-8-01"},{"activityid":1221,"fields":{"Type":"Articles in Refereed Journals","Title":""National Trauma and Romantic Illusions in Percy Shelley’s The Cenci"","Journal Title":"Humanities","Series Title":"Romanticism and Contemporary Literary Theory","Month / Season":"May","Year":2019,"Publisher":"","Publisher City and State":"","Publisher Country":"","Volume":"94","Issue Number / Edition":"8.2","Page Number(s) or Number of Pages":"","ISSN":"","DOI":"","CoAuthor":null,"URL":"https://doi.org/10.3390/h8020094","Description":"Percy Shelley responded to the 1819 Peterloo Massacre by declaring the government’s response “a bloody murderous oppression.” As Shelley’s language suggests, this was a seminal event in the socially conscious life of the poet. Thereafter, Shelley devoted much of his writing to delineating the sociopolitical milieu of 1819 in political and confrontational works, including The Cenci, a verse drama that I argue portrays the coercive violence implicit in nationalism, or, as I term it, national trauma. In displaying the historical Roman Cenci family in starkly vituperous manner, that is, Shelley reveals his drive to speak to the historical moment, as he creates parallels between the tyranny that the Roman pater familias exhibits toward his family and the repression occurring during the time of emergent nationhood in Hanoverian England, which numerous scholars have addressed. While scholars have noted discrete acts of trauma in The Cenci and other Romantic works, there has been little sustained criticism from the theoretical point of view of trauma theory, which inhabits the intersections of history, cultural memory, and trauma, and which I explore as national trauma. Through The Cenci, Shelley implies that national trauma inheres within British nationhood in the multiple traumas of tyrannical rule, shored up by the nation’s cultural memory and history, instantiated in oppressive ancestral order and patrilineage. Viewing The Cenci from the perspective of national trauma, however, I conclude that Shelley’s revulsion at coercive governance and nationalism loses itself in the contemplation of the beautiful pathos of the effects of national trauma witnessed in Beatrice, as he instead turns to a more traditional national narrative.","Include description in output citation":1,"Origin":"Manual"},"facultyid":"C18061381","status":[{"id":1221,"status":"Completed/Published","term":"May","year":2019,"termid":"2018/04","listingorder":6,"completionorder":6}],"userid":"C18061381","attachments":[],"coauthors_list":["Lisa Kasmer"],"sort_date":"2019-5-01"},{"activityid":1348,"fields":{"Type":"Other Scholarly or Creative Work","Title":"[Reprint] "Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’: A Symptomatic Reading.” Literature and Psychology 36.3 (1990): 1-15.","Journal Title / Book Title / Volume Title":"The Short Story for Students","Series Title":"","Month":"","Year":2019,"Publisher":"Cengage Learning, Gale Project","Journal / Publisher City and State":"Detroit, MI","Jounal / Publisher Country":"","Volume":"","Issue Number / Edition":"","Page Number(s) or Number of Pages":"","ISBN / ISSN / Case Number":"","Co-contributor":null,"URL":"","Description":"","Include description in output citation":0,"Origin":"Manual"},"facultyid":"C18061381","status":[{"id":1348,"status":"Completed/Published","term":"Spring","year":2019,"termid":"2018/03","listingorder":6,"completionorder":6}],"userid":"C18061381","attachments":[],"coauthors_list":["Lisa Kasmer"],"sort_date":"2019-1-01"},{"activityid":1317,"fields":{"Type":"Other Scholarly or Creative Work","Title":""The Political Critique of Anne Yearsley’s Earl Goodwin." In Novel Histories: British Women Writing History, 1760-1830. From the national tales of the early nineteenth century to the socially incisive realist novels that emerged later in the century, nationalism is inescapable in this literature, as much current scholarship acknowledges. Nineteenth-century national trauma, however, has only recently begun to be explored. Taking as its starting point the unsettling effects of nationalism, the essays in this collection expose the violence underlying empire-building, particularly in regard to subject identity. National violence—imperialism, colonialism and warfare—necessarily grounds nation-formation in deep-lying trauma. As the essays demonstrate, such fraught nexus are made visible in national tales as well as in political policy, exposed by means of theoretical and historical analyses to reveal psychological, political, social and individual trauma. This exploration of violence in the construction of national ideology in nineteenth-century Britain rethinks our understanding of cultural memory, national identity, imperialism, and colonialism, recent thrusts of Romantic and Victorian study in nineteenth-century literature.","Include description in output
