This period was not only marked by civil unrest, terror and militarization, economic depression, and environmental abuse, but also unprecedented growth and visibility of Asian American literature. This volume is divided into four sections that plots the trajectories of, and tensions between, social challenges and literary advances. Part One tracks how Asian American literary productions of this period reckon with the effects of structures and networks of violence. Part Two tracks modes of intimacy – desires, loves, close friendships, romances, sexual relations, erotic contacts – that emerge in the face of neoimperialism, neoliberalism, and necropolitics. New stories selected from open submissions are set alongside classic sci-fi by the likes of Otto (Eando) Binder and Zenna Henderson, modern stories by such authors as Celu Amberstone and Ken Liu, and older, realist immigrant narratives by Abraham Cahan, Sui Sin Far, Lee Yan Phou, Constantine Panunzio and more. The two genres share similar generic genealogies, but they diverge teleologically. SF is built on the assumptions of scientific rationalism and therefore follows an identifiable internal logic, relying on our implicit or explicit belief in the plausibility of the story. The weird, by contrast, is resolutely committed to the inexplicable. Both, however, use horror to disrupt our reliance on realist modes of representation that flatter our epistemological certainties. As such, both SF and the weird have been platforms for colonialist and nationalist imaginations, but both have also been potent vehicles for revealing, resisting, and repairing the brutalities of such imaginations.","Include description in output citation":1,"Origin":"Manual"},"facultyid":"C17291309","status":[{"id":7280,"status":"Completed/Published","term":"Fall","year":2022,"termid":"2022/01","listingorder":6,"completionorder":6}],"userid":"C17291309","attachments":[{"attachmentid":5814,"mimetype":"application/pdf","filename":"Huang CH SF and the Weird Cambridge Companion to American Horror.pdf","filesize":114584,"downloadurl":"https://faculty180.interfolio.com/public/download.php?key=SDRwNCtxSUpsamxBQ213WS9ucHFuNnMwT0hzQU11b2RPQkJ2cWc3amxyUmNRdVVXTkF4MU1obG5qWUl1dHkxOU5jdjk3cGJiMWJ0SExZb01TZG1lZklSRDZNdmNmTHVtMTFTMUZUMGovQ1o5aHBoK0VaSnYwemozSUdsRk5NbHZscHUwWmtrTFlscEl5dEQvcXVpQ1BwR2hNaUo1U2pkZ1h4dXkweUtmTkJXdWhZQkptWWpNdnc9PQ%3D%3D"}],"coauthors_list":["Betsy Huang","Mark Storey","Stephen Shapiro"],"sort_date":"2022-08-04"},{"activityid":7283,"fields":{"Type":"Chapters in Books","Chapter Title":""Futurebuilding: Teaching Asian North American Speculative Fiction"","Book Title":"MLA Teaching Approaches to Asian North American Literature","Series Title":"Modern Language Association of America Options for Teaching Series","Year":2022,"Date Published":"2022-07-28","Publisher":"Modern Language Association of America","Publisher City and State":"New York","Country of Publisher":"USA","Edition":"First","Page Numbers":"142-151","ISSN":"9781603295635 (Hardcover); 9781603295642 (Paperback)","DOI":"https://www.mla.org/Publications/Bookstore/Options-for-Teaching/Teaching-Asian-North-American-Texts#product-description","CoAuthor":null,"URL":"https://www.mla.org/Publications/Bookstore/Options-for-Teaching/Teaching-Asian-North-American-Texts#product-toc","Description":"
From the short stories and journalism of Sui Sin Far to Maxine Hong Kingston’s pathbreaking The Woman Warrior to recent popular and critical successes such as Viet Thanh Nguyen’s The Sympathizer, Mohsin Hamid’s The Reluctant Fundamentalist, and Kevin Kwan’s Crazy Rich Asians, Asian North American literature and media encompass a long history and a diverse variety of genres and aesthetic approaches.

The essays in this volume provide context for understanding the history of Asian immigrants to the United States and Canada and the experiences of their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Contributors address historical contexts, from the early enactment of Asian exclusion laws to the xenophobia following 9/11, and provide tools for textual analysis. The essays explore conventionally literary texts, genres such as mystery and speculative fiction, historical documents and legal texts, and visual media including films, photography, and graphic novels, emphasizing the ways that creators have crossed boundaries of genre and produced innovative new forms.
","Include description in output citation":1,"Origin":"Manual"},"facultyid":"C17291309","status":[{"id":7283,"status":"Completed/Published","term":"Summer","year":2022,"termid":"2021/05","listingorder":6,"completionorder":6}],"userid":"C17291309","attachments":[],"coauthors_list":["Betsy Huang","Jennifer A Ho","Jenny Wills"],"sort_date":"2022-07-28"},{"activityid":8363,"fields":{"Type":"Chapters in Books","Chapter Title":""How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional America: Charles Yu's Immigrant Utopianism"","Book Title":"Race and Utopian Desire in American Literature and Society","Series Title":"","Year":2019,"Date Published":"2019-10-23","Publisher":"Palgrave Macmillan","Publisher City and State":"New York, NY","Country of Publisher":"USA","Edition":"","Page Numbers":"201-220","ISSN":"978-3-030-19469-7","DOI":"https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-030-19470-3","CoAuthor":null,"URL":"https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-3-030-19470-3_11","Description":"","Include description in output citation":0,"Origin":"Manual"},"facultyid":"C17291309","status":[{"id":8363,"status":"Completed/Published","term":"Fall","year":2019,"termid":"2019/01","listingorder":6,"completionorder":6}],"userid":"C17291309","attachments":[{"attachmentid":6740,"mimetype":"image/jpeg","filename":"Race and Utopian Desire Chan Ventura cover image.jpeg","filesize":83851,"downloadurl":"https://faculty180.interfolio.com/public/download.php?key=SDRwNCtxSUpsamxBQ213WS9ucHFuNnMwT0hzQU11b2RPQkJ2cWc3amxyUmNRdVVXTkF4MU1obG5qWUl1dHkxOWlCMEh3YVdJZEp4V2owMFpXYVhuVExYdng5Mk96NUZjTTVLckRFaFdDNVltRFlZOWg3V1Q1UUVBQU9BNGZlZ0FaTHcvNjZBTUVTNXF2RTBlcmg0Q1pIYkREQWtXWENzOQ%3D%3D"}],"coauthors_list":["Betsy Huang"],"sort_date":"2019-10-23"},{"activityid":8366,"fields":{"Type":"Books and Monographs","Title":"Diversity and Inclusion in Higher Education and Societal Contexts. ","Series Title":"","Year":2018,"Date Published":"2018-01-09","Publisher":"Palgrave Macmillan","Publisher City and State":"New York, NY","Country of Publisher":"USA","Volume":"","Edition":"","Number of Pages":"396","ISBN":"978-3319701769","DOI":"https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-70175-2","CoAuthor":null,"URL":"https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-319-70175-2","Description":"","Include description in output citation":0,"Origin":"Manual"},"facultyid":"C17291309","status":[{"id":8366,"status":"Completed/Published","term":"Spring","year":2018,"termid":"2017/03","listingorder":6,"completionorder":6}],"userid":"C17291309","attachments":[],"coauthors_list":["Betsy Huang","SunHee K.
