Betsy Huang is Professor of English at Clark University<\/strong>. She served as Associate Provost and Dean of the College from 2019 to 2024 and held the Andrea B. and Peter D. Klein \u201964 Distinguished Professorship from 2018 to 2023.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Huang joined Clark’s English Department in 2003 as its first specialist in U.S. multi-ethnic literature. She specializes in ethnic American and Asian American literature, science fiction, and genre fiction and theory. Her teaching focuses on literatures on the margins: stories of people living and writing in spaces of cultural and historical invisibility. She is a two-time winner of Clark University’s Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Courses taught by Dr. Huang include Ethnic America: Literature, Theory, Politics; Fictions of Asian America<\/strong>; Studies in Contemporary Literature: Speculative Fiction<\/strong>; Science Fiction and the Mind of the Other<\/strong> (with Dr. Scott Hendricks, Philosophy); Race, Genre, and Autobiography<\/strong> (with Dr. Shelly Tenenbaum, Sociology); the First Year Intensive seminar Ecologies and Technologies in Science Fiction<\/strong>; and the English Senior Capstone.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Huang has published four books \u2014 a monograph, Contesting Genres in Contemporary Asian American Fiction<\/em><\/strong> (Palgrave, 2010), and three co-edited essay collections: Asian American Literature in Transition: 1996-2020<\/em><\/strong> (Cambridge University Press, 2021);\u00a0Diversity and Inclusion in Higher Education and Societal Contexts<\/em><\/strong> (Palgrave Macmillan, 2018); and\u00a0Techno-Orientalism: Imagining Asia in Speculative Fiction, History, and Media<\/em><\/strong> (Rutgers UP, 2015). Techno-Orientalism 2.0: New Intersections and Interventions<\/em><\/strong>, a follow-up volume to the first Techno-Orientalism <\/em>anthology, is forthcoming in July 2025, on the ten-year anniversary of the publication of the first volume. SF is built on the assumptions of scientific rationalism and therefore follows an identifiable internal logic, relying on our implicit or explicit belief in the plausibility of the story. The weird, by contrast, is resolutely committed to the inexplicable. Both, however, use horror to disrupt our reliance on realist modes of representation that flatter our epistemological certainties. Cheng negotiated two very different lifestyles while he moved between the working-class, ethnic, and largely immigrant neighborhood of Queens, New York where his family resided, and the famous Hotel Chelsea in Manhattan where he lived, painted, and socialized with the hotel\\u2019s regular rotation of notable literati, artists, and musicians until his death.
