Elucidation of these complex structures and motions is possible with the use of advanced scattering, both neutron and x-ray, and solid state NMR techniques. The combination of scattering and NMR allows for the study of dynamics over a large timescale (picoseconds to seconds) and of structures looking at the local environment through to long range order.<\/p>\n<p>1) Local Structure and Properties in High Surface Metal Oxides via NMR<\/p>\n<p>The local coordination and symmetry of a surface species affects the properties of that site. An understanding of what factors control the distortions necessary to alter the surface properties is needed to intelligently tailor the reactivity of mesoporous or nanoscopic oxides and exfoliated nanosheets. These materials are of interest due to their potential to serve as catalysts, proton conductors, and building blocks for novel nanostructured materials. In the case of materials that are not amenable to traditional characterization via diffraction, these surface sites are difficult to characterize. However, spectroscopic methods that are not dependent on long-range order and are element selective have the potential to illuminate the nature of these species. To develop this correlation, we employ solid-state NMR methodologies such as multiple quantum magic angle spinning (MQMAS) and quadrupolar phase adjusted sideband suppression (QPASS), to examine the NMR active isotopes of early transition metals in these oxides. Information based on the electric field gradient sensed by a quadrupolar nucleus and the chemical shift anisotropy, both created by the arrangement and bonding of oxygen atoms surrounding the metal atom, are used to determine the local structure.<\/p>\n<p>2) Nanocomposite Materials using Metal Oxide Mesoporous Hosts<\/p>\n<p>Use of mesoporous oxides as confinement hosts is desirable due to their ordered nature, high surface area, and tunable well-defined pore sizes. These factors make mesoporous oxides useful hosts to study the effects of encapsulation of organic or inorganic species using NMR and quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS). The oxide host can affect the motion of the polymer through the interaction between the walls and polymer units. Confinement can also alter the phase that is produced from the synthesis of inorganic oxides in the cavities. Our research will focus on the incorporation of polymer electrolyte materials and lithium conducting inorganic oxides.<\/p>\n<p>3) Polymer-blend based Lithium Polymer Electrolytes<\/p>\n<p>Solid polymer electrolytes have been pursued as a replacement for the liquid solvents used in current battery systems due to safety and performance issues. The polymer bland work centers on combining a high molecular weight PMMA lithium ionomer block co-polymer with a low molecular weight species to create a semi-rigid film that contains a mobile phase for lithium conduction. The goal is to introduce the dynamics of a liquid phase while retaining the mechanical strength of a heavier polymer. To determine the efficacy of these materials as a transport medium, the environment and mobility of the lithium cation in the channels are characterized through solid-state NMR methods. To better understand &lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;where in the layered structure these novel transition metals &lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;are &lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;located&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;,&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt; 93&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;Nb &lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;NMR&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt; at 9.4T&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt; &lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;w&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;as &lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;utilized&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt; to examine the changes in Nb site population and thus indirectly &lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;determine&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt; the &lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;location of the other metals.&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt; Spectra was observable in both the diamagnetic (M = Zn) and paramagnetic (M = Co, Ni) samples. &lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;Static &lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;wide line&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt; and &lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;MAS&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt; &lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;spectra&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt; were &lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;collected with&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt; quadrupolar&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;-&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;coupling&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;-&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;dependent &lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;double frequency sweep&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt; signal enhancement methods&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt; &lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;to separate the different Nb sites based on the&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;ir&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt; &lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;electric &lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;field gradient values. &lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;Remarkably similar&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;spectra &lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;observed&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt; in all three sample&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;s pointing to a &lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;similar&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;, select&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;i&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;ve atom&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt; sit&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;e&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt; pattern&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;for the M&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;2 &lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt; transition metals&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt; in the lattice&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;.&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;\\\/p&gt;\",\"Include description in output citation\":0,\"Origin\":\"Manual\"},\"facultyid\":\"C17261342\",\"status\":[{\"id\":13836,\"status\":\"Completed\\\/Published\",\"term\":\"Summer\",\"year\":2024,\"termid\":\"2023\\\/05\",\"listingorder\":6,\"completionorder\":6}],\"userid\":\"C17261342\",\"attachments\":[],\"coauthors_list\":[\"Luis J. Disruptive advances in these technologies face challenges stemming from fundamental knowledge gaps that limit power density and durability in the batteries. Both performance attributes are impacted by the nature of charge transport within solid-like ionic conductors that would be used in these batteries. A better understanding of these processes will benefit a wide range of technologically and commercially promising areas beyond sustainable electrical grid load-balancing and transportation. Specific additional examples include deployable sensors, gas separation, actuators, ion exchange membranes, and optoelectronic devices. This study will focus on understanding the fundamental aspects of ion diffusion through nanostructured polymeric matrices, and on using these insights to guide the design of solid polymer electrolytes for high power density lithium-ion batteries. As part of education outreach activities, the Principle Investigators will participate in the Academic Clark Excellence, program, ACE. This effort focuses on preparing and mentoring entering first-year students, especially those underrepresented in STEM, so that they can take full advantage of the research opportunities available in the sciences and can successfully fulfill the requirements of today's science careers or post-graduate studies in chemistry. The PIs have structured a series of activities and practices seeking to guide and mentor graduate students on job-seeking best practices, intellectual property law, and scientific writing.&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;span&gt;The goal of this project is to examine the lithium-ion (Li+) dynamics and population distribution within nanostructured polymeric ionic conductors to understand the mechanisms controlling charge transport through matrices with solid-like mechanical properties and liquid-like ion diffusion. The two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation correlation experiments of the project are used to study a wide variety of ion conductors in an effort to achieve a more complete understanding of the dynamic processes controlling ion diffusion through polymers. This research plan aims to use lithium-conducting, poly(ethylene-imine)-based, diblock copolymers as a model system to study ion transport through mechanically robust membranes containing &quot;ion-permeable&quot;, yet mechanically reinforcing, domains. Since the dynamics of most ion conducting processes through polymer matrices are governed by the same fundamental principles, the results of this work will impact the design of a wide variety of ion-transporting media. This research plan will quantify the effect of polymer backbone structure and dielectric constant on the effective concentration of charge carriers and their mobility through a nanostructured polymeric matrix. The target copolymers will serve as model compounds for fundamental phase behavior ion-bearing diblock copolymers.
