Sherry Freyermuth is a published, award-winning graphic designer with experience working for large corporate brands and non-profit initiatives. She currently is an Assistant Professor of Studio Art at Clark University in Worcester, MA.<\/p>\n

This provides an opportunity to develop my teaching and professional experience into scholarship that supports advancement towards tenure and promotion. In this case study, I detail how I\\u2019ve used lessons from the classroom to develop conference presentations and articles about my creative interests in traditional typographic processes such as calligraphy, letterpress, and hand lettering.<\\\/span><\\\/p>\\n<br>\\n<p><span style="font-weight:400;">In the early 2000s began an upward trend in hand lettering, letterpress, and other traditional design practices. My students were exploring these trends in their own work, so I started teaching letter press and hand lettering techniques in my classes. I\\u00a0 first reflected on this in my research by presenting a paper at the 2013 SECAC conference titled: Examining the Resurgence of Hand Lettering in Contemporary Poster Design. In 2017, I presented a paper: Hands on History: Learning the History of Typography with a Letterpress Workshop, which was later published as an article.\\u00a0<\\\/span><\\\/p>\\n<br>\\n<p><span style="font-weight:400;">Hand lettering is still widely popular, however, I\\u2019ve noticed a lack of understanding behind the historical influences of styles popularized on online platforms like Instagram and Behance. I wrote and illustrated <\\\/span><span style="font-weight:400;">Hello at the Farm<\\\/span><span style="font-weight:400;"> as an inclusive read aloud picture book that focuses on farm animal actions rather than sounds to allow kids like my son, Ollie, to participate fully in the reading experience. What started out as a personal project has developed into a methodology that fills a broader need that promotes inclusivity for children with disabilities and different communication needs.<\\\/span><\\\/p>\\n<br>\\n<p><span style="font-weight:400;">As I shared the book concept with Ollie's speech and behavioral therapists, I found they had a need for specially developed learning materials. For instance, I was able to develop a modified version of the picture book text, allowing therapists to use the repetition to aid in retention of the material. I also developed supplemental activities to deepen the learning experience in therapy sessions or classrooms.<\\\/span><\\\/p>\\n<p><span style="font-weight:400;">By incorporating feedback from caregivers, teachers, and therapists, I have designed tools that are user-friendly and engaging for children to use. This process was hard work, but I found a new joy in my teaching through the process of engaging with faculty from across campus. At times I felt vulnerable and challenged to think in new ways about my teaching practice, but I always had the sense of \\u201cwe\\u2019re in this together,\\u201d and this shared experience built a strong community with my peers.\\u00a0<\\\/span><\\\/p>\\n<p><span style="font-weight:400;">What was more surprising was how I built a similarly engaged sense of community by sharing this work with my students in the classroom in spring 2023. I was transparent about the work I was doing to update my teaching and how it was impacting their learning experience. Students used human-centered research methods to discover what was preventing the two communities from collaborating and develop a solution from there. Outcomes included an Online community newspaper, an app for communication and requesting volunteer services, and a neighborhood beautification initiative.
