She currently is an Assistant Professor of Studio Art at Clark University in Worcester, MA.<\/p>\n<p>Sherry has been teaching hand lettering and typography for over a decade and presented research on it at numerous academic conferences including SECAC, AIGA National Conference, and CAA and published her research in <span><em>Plot(s) Journal of Design Studies<\/em><\/span> and as an open-source teaching resource.<\/p>\n<p>Her most recent book, <em>Surviving the Creative Space: Teamwork Techniques for Designers<\/em> was published by Bloomsbury in October 2022. In the book, Sherry provides candid interviews and case studies from large multinationals\u2014including IBM, OH Partners and CitiBike\u2014to smaller firms and start-ups. She presents emerging designers a realistic picture of the design field today, and provides inspiration and guidance on how designers around world have overcome challenges and utilized the benefits of working in teams.<\/p>\n<p><span>Sherry has been awarded a Clark University Higgins School of Humanities grant as well as a one semester sabbatical to support her current research about hand lettering history and practice. She plans to visit numerous archives including the Letterform Archive and the RIT Graphic Design Archive in 2023 and 2024. <\/p>\n<p><\/span><span>Sherry came to Clark University in 2020 with eight years of university level teaching experience. This project evolved into a comprehensive framework addressing the needs of children with disabilities by promoting accessible and meaningful engagement. Through collaboration with speech and behavioral therapists, an adapted version of the book featuring repetitive text was created to support material retention. Additional supplemental activities were designed to deepen learning in therapy sessions and educational settings. Input from caregivers, teachers, and therapists ensured the development of user-friendly and engaging resources. This provides an opportunity to develop my teaching and professional experience into scholarship that supports advancement towards tenure and promotion. In this case study, I detail how I\\u2019ve used lessons from the classroom to develop conference presentations and articles about my creative interests in traditional typographic processes such as calligraphy, letterpress, and hand lettering.&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;\\\/p&gt;\\n&lt;br&gt;\\n&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style=&quot;font-weight:400;&quot;&gt;In the early 2000s began an upward trend in hand lettering, letterpress, and other traditional design practices. My students were exploring these trends in their own work, so I started teaching letter press and hand lettering techniques in my classes. I\\u00a0 first reflected on this in my research by presenting a paper at the 2013 SECAC conference titled: Examining the Resurgence of Hand Lettering in Contemporary Poster Design. In 2017, I presented a paper: Hands on History: Learning the History of Typography with a Letterpress Workshop, which was later published as an article.\\u00a0&lt;\\\/span&gt;&lt;\\\/p&gt;\\n&lt;br&gt;\\n&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style=&quot;font-weight:400;&quot;&gt;Hand lettering is still widely popular, however, I\\u2019ve noticed a lack of understanding behind the historical influences of styles popularized on online platforms like Instagram and Behance. This process was hard work, but I found a new joy in my teaching through the process of engaging with faculty from across campus.
