Shaw is an Assistant Professor of English at Clark University where he teaches and researches Shakespeare and early modern English literature. His work explores the intersections of race, emotions, and disability in 16th and 17th Century texts. In this way, Dryden disciplines Shakespeare and further whitens what were unsatisfactory and rebellious white characters in Shakespeare's earlier plays. I gave a well-recieved lecture on this essay for the Shakespeare Seminar of the Mahindra Center at Harvard in February 2021. I am thankful for the feedback on the essay in this venue. Abstract: What does disability justice look like in Shakespeare, and how does whiteness interrupt it? My presentation highlights plays such as King Lear, Richard III, and The Tempest to show how systems of white racial power are celebrated on the early modern stage at the expense of both white and nonwhite disabled characters. While building on scholarship that has shown us how to identify disability in Shakespearean texts, this presentation also considers the functions of disability, or how disability works, in this literature.
