Approximately 80% of the population continues to rely on traditional medicine, including for the prevention and treatment of viral diseases. Many antiviral plants are available to and widely used by communities in areas where access to conventional healthcare systems is limited. In some cases, pharmacological studies also confirm the potent antiviral properties of Ethiopian plants. Building on traditional knowledge of medicinal plants and testing their antiviral properties may help to expand options to address the global pandemic of COVID-19 including its recently isolated virulent variants and prepare for similar outbreaks in the future. Here, we provide an ethnobotanical and pharmacological inventory of Ethiopian medicinal plants that might contribute to the prevention and treatment of viral diseases. We identified 387 species, about 6% of Ethiopia's known flora, for which records of use by local communities and traditional herbalists have been documented for the treatment of viral diseases. We provide a framework for further investigation and development of this vital resource much anticipated to help combat emergent viral diseases along with existing ones in Ethiopia and elsewhere.","Include description in output citation":0,"Origin":"PubMed"},"facultyid":"C70263653","status":[{"id":10305,"status":"Completed/Published","term":"Fall","year":2023,"termid":"2023/01","listingorder":6,"completionorder":6}],"userid":"C70263653","attachments":[],"coauthors_list":["Mekbib Fekadu","Ermias Lulekal","Solomon Tesfaye","Morgan Ruelle","Nigist Asfaw","Tesfaye Awas","Kebu Balemie","Kaleab Asres","Sebastian Guenther","Zemede Asfaw","Sebsebe Demissew"],"sort_date":"2024-9-01"},{"activityid":13093,"fields":{"Type":"Presentations","Title of Presentation":"Plant diversity and food sovereignty: Stewarding species and varieties in Ethiopia","Conference / Meeting Name":"Annual Meeting of the Botanical Society of America","Location of Conference / Meeting":"Grand Rapids, MI","Month / Season":"June","Year":2024,"Sponsoring Organization":"","CoAuthor":null,"URL":"","Description":"","Include description in output citation":0,"Origin":"Manual"},"facultyid":"C70263653","status":[{"id":13093,"status":"Completed/Published","term":"Summer","year":2024,"termid":"2023/05","listingorder":6,"completionorder":6}],"userid":"C70263653","attachments":[],"coauthors_list":["Morgan L. One of the greatest challenges is the lack of predictability, especially at local scales. Indigenous and rural societies face an ever shifting “new normal” through increasing inconsistency in the seasonality of temperature and precipitation, and greater frequency of extreme weather events. With global food systems dependent on local producers, climatic variability disrupts access to affordable, nutritious, and culturally relevant food. Since the late 19th century, farmers in the Ethiopian highlands have planted eucalyptus (Eucalyptus spp., family Myrtaceae) as an alternative source of construction material and fuel wood, as well as to generate income. We conducted individual interviews, vegetation surveys, participatory mapping, and direct matrix ranking with farming communities in the Debark District of northwestern Ethiopia to understand the value of trees in general and Eucalyptus globulus in particular. Our vegetation survey confirms eucalyptus is the dominant woody species, while indigenous cedar (Juniperus procera) and olive (Olea europaea subsp. cuspidata) are rare. According to farmers, eucalyptus does not propagate on its own, so its proliferation could be taken as enthusiasm about this species. Indeed, farmers assign high socioeconomic values to eucalyptus, in large part due to its rapid growth rate, coppicing ability, and multifunctionality. However, our interviews reveal widespread ambivalence toward eucalyptus due to its negative impacts on water resources and concerns that it is replacing indigenous trees. Push-pull technology (PPT) is an agronomic package designed to reduce the effects of Striga and stemborers on maize and sorghum production. As PPT is promoted in new areas, including Ethiopia, there is a need to review the evidence that the technology helps farmers mitigate or adapt to climate change. Furthermore, proponents need to consider whether tasks associated with establishing and maintaining PPT may worsen existing gender burdens. We assess whether PPT is climate- and gender-smart based on a review of 40 publications that included field experiments or farmer surveys. We find strong evidence that intercropping with drought-tolerant Desmodium effectively reduces Striga abundance and enhances grain yield. Although gender influences PPT adoption, there is a lack of knowledge about additional labor requirements for women. We recommend research focusing on 1) the efficacy of PPT under different climate conditions, 2) optimal timing of planting push and pull species; 3) evaluation of fodder outputs; 4) water requirements associated with establishment; and 5) implications for gender burden across cultural contexts. We suggest a participatory approach that integrates farmers’ perspectives to support climate mitigation, adaptation, and gender equity.","Include description in output citation":0,"Origin":"Manual"},"facultyid":"C70263653","status":[{"id":3892,"status":"Completed/Published","term":"Summer","year":2021,"termid":"2020/05","listingorder":6,"completionorder":6},{"id":3892,"status":"Revise & Resubmit","term":"Spring","year":2021,"termid":"2020/03","listingorder":3,"completionorder":3}],"userid":"C70263653","attachments":[],"coauthors_list":["Ryan W Kopper","Morgan L. This study explores intraspecific diversity of field pea and its contribution to farmers' livelihoods in two agroecological zones of South Tigray and South Wollo, northeastern Ethiopia. Interviews were conducted with 168 farming households. The number of varieties and the Shannon Diversity Index (SDI) were higher in South Tigray (seven varieties, 0.35 SDI) than South Wollo (two varieties, 0.025 SDI). Farmers in South Tigray plant field pea during two growing seasons, allowing for integration of multiple varieties into their farming systems. The price of one field pea type from South Tigray known as “dekoko” was twice as high as other field pea varieties, most likely due to high demand and relatively low supply. Key informants reported “dekoko” has become less common in their communities, with diseases and pests reported as major production constraints. This study assessed the diversity of farmers’ faba bean varieties and local knowledge related to their use and management across multiple cultural and agroecological contexts. We conducted 288 structured and 48 semi-structured interviews in five agroecological zones and four cultural areas in northeastern and southwestern Ethiopia. A total of seventeen farmers’ varieties were identified and documented based on phenotypic descriptors. The tepid sub-moist mid-highlands of South Wollo had the highest number of varieties (five) of any area sampled; however, the humid mid-highlands of Jimma had a higher Shannon-Wiener diversity index based on the area planted to each variety. Most farmers reported that they had originally obtained their traditional varieties from family members, whereas new varieties were typically purchased from local markets. According to farmers, both male and female adults participated in the production and processing of faba bean, with some distinct differences among cultural areas. The greatest number of plants were used to treat hypertension (14 plants), followed by kidney aids (12), analgesics (11), gastrointestinal aids (11), and dermatological aids (9). Comparisons with hospital records suggest that medicinal plants treat common ailments and preempt the need for some hospital visits. In addition, medicinal plants provide a source of livelihood for approximately 25% of participants. Many gatherers are concerned about the impacts of harvesting on medicinal plant resources. Where some disciplines have explored the theoretical and methodological implications of power relations, the engagement movement writ large has suffered from a lack of explicit conceptual models and in-depth analyses of the role of power in the process of knowledge co-creation. Over the last 30 years, considerable attention has been paid to how resources and expertise within academic institutions can be brought to bear on the intractable social and economic problems of local communities. A necessary, yet under-theorised aspect of these dynamics is the extent to which the positionality and interpersonal relationships between actors impact the outcomes and durability of these processes. In this introductory article, we describe our effort to cultivate a conversation about power in engaged research. We organised an Author Collective for scholars and practitioners with a wide range of perspectives to expand our theoretical understanding of power’s role in university-community engagement. By reflecting on identities, approaches and experiences, the authors in this issue explore power as a vehicle for understanding the impact of positionality and interpersonal relationships on the process and outcomes of collaborative research.","Include description in output citation":0,"Origin":"BibTeX"},"facultyid":"C70263653","status":[{"id":5974,"status":"Completed/Published","term":"Fall","year":2021,"termid":"2021/01","listingorder":6,"completionorder":6}],"userid":"C70263653","attachments":[],"coauthors_list":["Margaret A Post","Morgan Ruelle"],"sort_date":"2021-9-01"},{"activityid":5975,"fields":{"Type":"Reviews, Abstracts, Pamphlets","Title":"The Edible Gardens of Ethiopia: An Ethnographic Journey into Beauty and Hunger","Outlet":"Economic Botany","Month / Season":"","Year":2021,"Publisher":"Springer","Publisher City and State":"","Publisher Country":"","Volume":"75","Issue Number / Edition":"2","Page Number(s) or Number of Pages":"175","CoAuthor":null,"URL":"","Description":"","Include description in output citation":0,"Origin":"BibTeX"},"facultyid":"C70263653","status":[{"id":5975,"status":"Completed/Published","term":"Fall","year":2021,"termid":"2021/01","listingorder":6,"completionorder":6}],"userid":"C70263653","attachments":[],"coauthors_list":["Morgan Ruelle"],"sort_date":"2021-9-01"},{"activityid":5977,"fields":{"Type":"Presentations","Title of Presentation":"Ecological Calendars of the Standing Rock Nation","Conference / Meeting Name":"Rhythms of the Land: Indigenous Knowledge, Science, and Thriving Together in a Changing Climate","Location of Conference / Meeting":"Ithaca, NY","Month / Season":"","Year":2021,"Sponsoring Organization":"Cornell University","CoAuthor":null,"URL":"","Description":"","Include description in output citation":0,"Origin":"Manual"},"facultyid":"C70263653","status":[{"id":5977,"status":"Completed/Published","term":"Fall","year":2021,"termid":"2021/01","listingorder":6,"completionorder":6}],"userid":"C70263653","attachments":[],"coauthors_list":["Morgan L. As in many parts of the world, dietary diversity and crop diversity have declined in tandem in Ethiopia, where locally adapted farming strategies are rapidly being replaced by homogenous crops and introduced cropping systems. However, there is a limited understanding of the complex impacts of rapidly disappearing traditional cropping systems on nutrition, especially their impact on nutritional yield, crop resilience, and soil health. One of the strategies farmers have traditionally employed to provide dietary diversity and mitigate risk is crop mixtures—combinations of multiple crops or varieties planted in the same field. In the Ethiopian highlands, many staple crops have traditionally been grown as mixtures. For example, multiple varieties of wheat and barley are often sown together in the same field, as are fava beans and peas, multiple varieties of sorghum, and multiple varieties of tef. However, these mixtures are being replaced by single-cultivar plantings of wheat, maize, or other crops with unknown consequences for human nutrition and agroecosystem resilience.

To address the interconnected issues of nutrition, climate resilience, and loss of traditional farmer knowledge in Ethiopia, and to contribute to identification of culturally appropriate, food-based strategies to alleviate widespread micronutrient deficiencies, we aim to generate detailed nutritional, agronomic, and ethnobotanical data on four traditional mixed cropping systems which are being replaced in the Ethiopian highlands. By leveraging PTFI’s new metabolomic analysis platform, generating participatory field experiments at agricultural research stations and farmers’ own fields, and conducting interviews with farmers, this research would generate valuable knowledge about the benefits and limitations of traditional crop mixtures. Furthermore, through partnership with the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI), Wollo University, Addis Ababa University (AAU), Clark University, Cornell University, and the Ethiopian Biodiversity Institute (EBI), this research would inform policy-making in agricultural development, public health, and climate adaptation in Ethiopia and other countries facing similar challenges.

This project would provide training for eight Ethiopian and four U.S. graduate students, metabolomic data for 180 samples of sorghum, tef, wheat, barley, fava beans, and field peas grown and processed under a variety of conditions with associated cultural and agroecological metadata; pilot data for the application of data sovereignty mechanisms to the PTFI database; the collection and deposit of farmer landraces and mixtures in the Ethiopian national germplasm bank; open-access scientific publications and conference presentations; and outreach and dissemination of results via the Ethiopian Public Health Institute and Wollo University’s agricultural extension system.
","Number of Periods":3,"URL":""},"facultyid":"C70263653","funding":{"8242":{"id":8242,"grantid":2351,"fundedamount":"8998","yearfunded":1,"fundedtype":"Total","currencytype":"USD","startdate":"2023-01-01","enddate":"2024-01-01"},"8243":{"id":8243,"grantid":2351,"fundedamount":"34867","yearfunded":2,"fundedtype":"Total","currencytype":"USD","startdate":"2024-01-01","enddate":"2025-01-01"},"8244":{"id":8244,"grantid":2351,"fundedamount":"0","yearfunded":3,"fundedtype":"Total","currencytype":"USD","startdate":"2025-01-01","enddate":"2026-01-01"},"8245":{"id":8245,"grantid":2351,"fundedamount":"8180","yearfunded":1,"fundedtype":"Direct","currencytype":"USD","startdate":"2023-01-01","enddate":"2024-01-01"},"8246":{"id":8246,"grantid":2351,"fundedamount":"31698","yearfunded":2,"fundedtype":"Direct","currencytype":"USD","startdate":"2024-01-01","enddate":"2025-01-01"},"8247":{"id":8247,"grantid":2351,"fundedamount":"0","yearfunded":3,"fundedtype":"Direct","currencytype":"USD","startdate":"2025-01-01","enddate":"2026-01-01"}},"coauthors":{"7678":{"authorid":7678,"grantid":2351,"firstname":"Alex","middleinitial":"C.","lastname":"McAlvay","authortype":"PI","percenteffort":null,"sameschoolflag":0,"facultyid":null,"primaryunitid":null},"7679":{"authorid":7679,"grantid":2351,"firstname":"Morgan","middleinitial":"L.","lastname":"Ruelle","authortype":"CoPI","percenteffort":null,"sameschoolflag":1,"facultyid":"C70263653","primaryunitid":17},"7680":{"authorid":7680,"grantid":2351,"firstname":"Zemede","middleinitial":"","lastname":"Asfaw","authortype":"CoPI","percenteffort":null,"sameschoolflag":0,"facultyid":null,"primaryunitid":null},"7681":{"authorid":7681,"grantid":2351,"firstname":"Asmare","middleinitial":"","lastname":"Dejen","authortype":"CoPI","percenteffort":null,"sameschoolflag":0,"facultyid":null,"primaryunitid":null},"7682":{"authorid":7682,"grantid":2351,"firstname":"Endale","middleinitial":"","lastname":"Amare","authortype":"CoPI","percenteffort":null,"sameschoolflag":0,"facultyid":null,"primaryunitid":null},"7683":{"authorid":7683,"grantid":2351,"firstname":"Alison","middleinitial":"G.","lastname":"Power","authortype":"CoPI","percenteffort":null,"sameschoolflag":0,"facultyid":null,"primaryunitid":null}},"status":[{"grantid":2351,"status":"Funded - In Progress","statuslabel":"Funded - In Progress","term":"Spring","year":2025,"termid":"2024/03","listingorder":3,"completionorder":5},{"grantid":2351,"status":"Funded - In Progress","statuslabel":"Funded - In Progress","term":"Spring","year":2024,"termid":"2023/03","listingorder":3,"completionorder":5},{"grantid":2351,"status":"Funded - In Progress","statuslabel":"Funded - In Progress","term":"Spring","year":2023,"termid":"2022/03","listingorder":3,"completionorder":5}],"userid":"C70263653","attachments":[],"sort_date":"2025-12-31"},{"activityid":2352,"fields":{"Title":"Co-Creating Research and Education Capacities to Understand, Visualize and Mitigate Climate-Change Impact Cascades and Inequities in Central Mexico","Sponsor":"National Science Foundation","Grant ID / Contract ID":"2230723","Award Date":"2022-08-24","Start Date":"2023-04-01","End Date":null,"Period Length":1,"Period Unit":"Year","Indirect Funding":1,"Indirect Cost Rate":null,"Total Funding":"1499365","Total Direct Funding":"0","Currency Type":"USD","Description":"","Abstract":"The news brings more and more reports of the growing impacts of climate change around the world: shrinking water reservoirs, severe drought, flooding, forest fires and dangerous heat waves, to name a few. These impacts are beyond human experience, catching us off-guard and therefore are causing catastrophic losses to lives, livelihoods, and properties. To make matters worse, one impact often has a domino effect or "impact cascade". It is becoming clear that, while climate change will impact us all, some of us are more at risk than others. Those living of the ‘edges’ of society, under social and economic stress, will suffer the most and are the least prepared. This project mobilizes diverse partners and social groups in the U.S. and Mexico to understand, visualize, and address the myriad impacts of climate change on water resources, ecosystems, food and agriculture, health, and livelihoods - in and around Mexico City. It also reveals how these impacts vary across populations and landscapes. The researchers integrate diverse data - including rainfall, temperature, population, land use/land cover - and tools to anticipate future impacts. The overarching goal is to create new ways to simulate and virtually inhabit future climate change/impact scenarios to be used by communities and policy makers to implement mitigation measures. This project, thus, re-imagines the way research, policy, community action, and education can join forces to address climate change and social justice. Its outcomes will be applicable not only in the U.S. and Mexico, but globally. The project also supports the training of graduate students at Clark University, notably from underrepresented groups in science, and outreach to the public.

How do diverse social groups co-create a shared understanding of complex climate-change impact cascades to water, ecosystems, food, health, livelihoods? How do we map and model impact inequities? How do we transform governance and social learning to chart sustainable, socially just, climate-resilient pathways? Here, the team works in a setting powerfully emblematic of this global climate and sustainability challenge: Mexico-Lerma-Cutzamala Hydrological Region, that includes Mexico City. To respond, for the first time, their approach combines four components in synergy: C1) Co-creation with partners (including pilot communities) of an open-source GIS/Remote Sensing-based Regional Climate-Change Atlas to map and spatially analyze social, climate and environmental conditions; C2) Co-creation of a System Dynamics Model informed by GIS, representing interactions/impacts among climate change, water, population, urbanization, land-use/land cover change, ecosystems, food, health, and livelihoods – and revealing of impact inequities and injustice; C3) Piloting of eXtended Reality (XR) decision analysis, simulating climate-change/development scenarios diverse stakeholders can inhabit virtually and interact with in groups, informed by C1 and C2; C4) Integration of research and education such that they reinforce each other, including the co-creation of courses and field research that U.S. students and their peers in Mexico can experience together as learning teams.","Number of Periods":3,"URL":"https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=2230723&HistoricalAwards=false"},"facultyid":"C70263653","funding":{"8236":{"id":8236,"grantid":2352,"fundedamount":"1499365","yearfunded":1,"fundedtype":"Total","currencytype":"USD","startdate":"2023-04-01","enddate":"2024-04-01"},"8237":{"id":8237,"grantid":2352,"fundedamount":"0","yearfunded":2,"fundedtype":"Total","currencytype":"USD","startdate":"2024-04-01","enddate":"2025-04-01"},"8238":{"id":8238,"grantid":2352,"fundedamount":"0","yearfunded":3,"fundedtype":"Total","currencytype":"USD","startdate":"2025-04-01","enddate":"2026-04-01"},"8239":{"id":8239,"grantid":2352,"fundedamount":"0","yearfunded":1,"fundedtype":"Direct","currencytype":"USD","startdate":"2023-04-01","enddate":"2024-04-01"},"8240":{"id":8240,"grantid":2352,"fundedamount":"0","yearfunded":2,"fundedtype":"Direct","currencytype":"USD","startdate":"2024-04-01","enddate":"2025-04-01"},"8241":{"id":8241,"grantid":2352,"fundedamount":"0","yearfunded":3,"fundedtype":"Direct","currencytype":"USD","startdate":"2025-04-01","enddate":"2026-04-01"}},"coauthors":{"7674":{"authorid":7674,"grantid":2352,"firstname":"Timothy","middleinitial":"","lastname":"Downs","authortype":"PI","percenteffort":null,"sameschoolflag":1,"facultyid":"C15101343","primaryunitid":17},"7675":{"authorid":7675,"grantid":2352,"firstname":"Yelena","middleinitial":"","lastname":"Ogneva-Himmelberger","authortype":"CoPI","percenteffort":null,"sameschoolflag":1,"facultyid":"C40191261","primaryunitid":17},"7676":{"authorid":7676,"grantid":2352,"firstname":"Cynthia","middleinitial":"M.","lastname":"Caron","authortype":"CoPI","percenteffort":null,"sameschoolflag":1,"facultyid":"C70009481","primaryunitid":17},"7677":{"authorid":7677,"grantid":2352,"firstname":"Morgan","middleinitial":"L.","lastname":"Ruelle","authortype":"CoPI","percenteffort":null,"sameschoolflag":1,"facultyid":"C70263653","primaryunitid":17}},"status":[{"grantid":2352,"status":"Funded - In Progress","statuslabel":"Funded - In Progress","term":"Spring","year":2025,"termid":"2024/03","listingorder":3,"completionorder":5},{"grantid":2352,"status":"Funded - In Progress","statuslabel":"Funded - In Progress","term":"Spring","year":2024,"termid":"2023/03","listingorder":3,"completionorder":5},{"grantid":2352,"status":"Funded - In Progress","statuslabel":"Funded - In Progress","term":"Spring","year":2023,"termid":"2022/03","listingorder":3,"completionorder":5}],"userid":"C70263653","attachments":[],"sort_date":"2023-04-01"},{"activityid":382,"fields":{"Title":"Seeding Food Resilience though Anchor Institutions","Sponsor":"National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA - NIFA)","Grant ID / Contract ID":"","Award Date":null,"Start Date":"2021-01-01","End Date":null,"Period Length":1,"Period Unit":"Year","Indirect Funding":0,"Indirect Cost Rate":null,"Total Funding":"49953","Total Direct Funding":null,"Currency Type":"USD","Description":"","Abstract":"
We propose a seed project to assemble a team, collect pilot data, and compose a full proposal which will include research, education, and outreach components. Ethiopia is a center of agrobiodiversity, including crop diversity developed and maintained by smallholder farmers for thousands of years, which provides farmers with options in the face of climate change and enhances nutrition through dietary diversity3.
