Clark University\u2019s Kaloosdian\/Mugar Chair in Armenian Genocide Studies, Elyse Semerdjian<\/strong>, in collaboration with Martin Christ<\/strong> of the University of Erfurt (Germany), will host the second of two workshops, “Necrogeographies and the Marginalized Dead,”<\/strong> at Clark University on September 17\u201318<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first workshop was held at the University of Erfurt in May 2025<\/strong> and was funded by the German Research Foundation through the Max Weber Institute. Building on those discussions, the second workshop will continue to cross disciplinary and chronological boundaries, bringing together scholars to examine how marginalized dead have been treated across diverse societies and historical periods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participants will workshop original research spanning Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, South Asia, Indigenous communities in the Americas, and the remains and burial practices of enslaved Africans. Panels will explore topics including the spatial politics of death; necro power and state violence; burial rights and expulsion; genocide and warfare; memory and commemorative practices; and the role of power in the marginalization of the dead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Papers presented at the workshop will be collected for publication in a forthcoming edited volume co-edited by Elyse Semerdjian and Martin Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
