The Geller Jazz Series at Clark University is proud to present an extraordinary evening of jazz featuring legendary saxophonist and composer David Murray, performing with both the David Murray Quartet and the David Murray Octet. This one-night event, Tradition in Motion<\/em>, offers audiences a rare opportunity to experience Murray\u2019s music in two distinct ensemble settings, highlighting the breadth and depth of his artistic vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since his arrival in New York in 1975, David Murray has established himself as one of the most prominent saxophone players and jazz leaders. He has released over 200 albums under his own name, working with the likes of Max Roach, Randy Weston, Pharoah Sanders, McCoy Tyner, Taj Mahal, Mal Waldron, Amiri Baraka, Jerry Garcia, and Quest Love, to name just a few. A well-known bandleader and a noteworthy composer\/arranger, Murray\u2019s memorable melodies and approach to improvisation are instantly recognizable. Even in his music\u2019s freest flights, he acknowledges the gravity of a tradition he honors more than most, combining all of his influences: gospel, jazz, free\/avant-garde jazz, R&B, and, in his associations with writers, poetry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The David Murray Quartet showcases Murray\u2019s intimate, expressive side, emphasizing improvisational dialogue, groove, and lyricism. In contrast, the David Murray Octet expands the sonic palette, drawing on Murray\u2019s long-standing engagement with extended forms, layered compositions, and rich ensemble textures. Together, these performances will reflect Murray\u2019s singular ability to move fluidly between small-group intensity and larger-scale compositional power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
