She made an indelible mark on the University through her brilliance\, service\, teaching\, and advising\, for which she won numerous awards. Professor Richter passed away in June after a long battle with ALS.  \n\n\n\nAll members of the campus community are welcome for this special celebration in her honor. DESCRIPTION:Date: October 16\, 2025\, 12 – 1:30 pm \n\n\n\nRoom: JC118 \n\n\n\nSpeaker: Balázs Zélity (Wesleyan University) \n\n\n\nTitle: Demographics and International Capital Flows: An Empirical Assessment \n\n\n\nAbstract: This paper empirically investigates whether shifts in demographic structure have an impact on cross-border capital flows. Country-level panel data with global coverage is utilised in fixed effects regressions. Demographic variables are instrumented by their predicted values\, which are calculated using a shift-share methodology. Local projections estimates complement the results with a dynamic perspective. The main finding is that there is a persistent positive relationship between a country’s mean age and its current and financial account balance — suggesting that population ageing increases net capital outflows. In this workshop\, we’ll dive into different techniques such as slab building (perfect for tumblers\, mugs\, and tiny dishes)\, pinch pots\, coils\, and even some clay compressions! Come to the Craft Studio and see what you can make out of clay!

SUMMARY:Illegal Mining and Ecosystem: Destruction in the Okapi Wildlife Reserve\, DRC
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, Pacifique Madibi\, M.S./GIS ’26\, will explore the contradiction between Congolese law\, which bans mining in protected areas\, and the reality of widespread illegal gold mining within the Okapi Wildlife Reserve\, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. He will highlight how illegal mining contributes to water pollution\, deforestation\, and threats to Indigenous communities\, while demonstrating how geospatial technologies and AI can strengthen environmental governance and conservation in the DRC.
