SUMMARY:Geography Colloquium Series: Dr. Timur Hammond
DESCRIPTION:The Transmitted Past: Toward a Rethinking of Geography\, Temporality\, and Community\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do we make a common world? This talk answers that question by focusing on the role that temporality plays in the making of both places and communities. Articulating a concept of the ‘transmitted past\,’ Timur Hammond\, associate professor in the Geography and Environment Department at Syracuse University\, argues that geographers ought to think of the past as what Annemarie Mol would term the ‘multiple.’ Such an approach helps us better understand the instruments through which we both know and construct the past; the possibility for different pasts to be spatially co-present and yet socially distinct; and the moments of friction and encounter when different places and their pasts breach one into the other. These insights\, Dr. Hammond suggests\, have broader implications for how geographers and others understand the politics and possibilities of the present moment.

SUMMARY:Fresh Check Day
DESCRIPTION:Fresh Check Day is a program created by the Jordan Porco Foundation\, and is put on by colleges and universities across the country. This is a mental health promotion and suicide prevention event specifically designed for college students. \n\n\n\nRed Square will be transformed into an expo-like\, lively\, social atmosphere to bring together interactive and educational booths combined with music\, prizes\, treats\, and giveaways for those who participate! The booths feature peer-to peer messaging in a positive\, community-focused setting that reflects a comprehensive approach to suicide prevention with topics including specific mental health issues\, high-risk populations\, stigma reduction\, positive coping\, life skills\, and more. \n\n\n\nBy engaging the entire college community in this campus-wide movement\, students are reminded that they are not alone and that their mental health is valued just as much as their physical health or their academic standing. The event is free to our Clark community and is sponsored by the Office of Wellness Education. The planning and running of this event would not be possible without collaboration from various other campus departments at Clark\, a large number of passionate student volunteers\, and representatives of The Jordan Porco Foundation.

SUMMARY:Defining Antisemitism and Protecting Academic Freedom After October 7
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: \n\n\n\nFrances Tanzer (Rose Professor of Holocaust Studies and Modern Jewish History and Culture\, Strassler Center) \n\n\n\nJohanna Vollhardt (Associate Professor\, Psychology and Director\, Peace and Conflict Studies) \n\n\n\nAlready before October 7\, institutions (including colleges and universities) began to adopt narrow definitions of antisemitism—especially the IHRA (International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance) definition—and use them for purposes outside of their original intention of preventing anti-Jewish discrimination. Instead\, institutions have deployed definitions of antisemitism to restrict academic freedom\, free speech\, and to repress activism on campuses—a development many experts worry will increase rather than curb antisemitism. In this workshop\, Professors Tanzer and Vollhardt will examine and historicize this paradoxical situation and the controversies around definitions of antisemitism. Participants in this hands-on workshop will learn what exactly the IHRA definition of antisemitism states and how its original drafter\, Kenneth S. Stern intended it to be used. We will also examine alternative working definitions of antisemitism (the Jerusalem Declaration on Antisemitism and the Nexus Project definition). Together we will discuss questions such as: What is antisemitism and what is it not? How should antisemitism be distinguished from criticisms of Israel and of Zionism? What are the consequences of adopting definitions of antisemitism in institutions of higher education\, and how can we avoid the repression of academic freedom and free speech in the name of preventing antisemitism? \n\n\n\nPresented by the Strassler Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies and Peace and Conflict Studies. Cosponsored by the Center for Gender\, Race and Area Studies.

DESCRIPTION:Anthony Amore / Portrait by Seth Jacobson\n\n\n\nArt theft is an illicit\, multi-billion-dollar industry each year\, and the world’s most significant heists share one thing in common: the priceless works of Rembrandt. The great Dutch Master’s paintings are renowned for their value by everyone from novice art enthusiasts to museum curators. Hollywood often portrays the theft of such valuable art as the work of dashing\, likeable thieves hired by evil\, reclusive geniuses. Yet\, the reality is quite different—and infinitely more interesting. \n\n\n\nAnthony Amore is Director of Security and Chief Investigator at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston\, where he is charged with the ongoing efforts to recover thirteen works of art stolen from the museum on March 18\, 1990. He has written multiple bestselling books and is the author of The Rembrandt Heist\, forthcoming from Pegasus Books in November 2025. In this talk\, Amore will take us behind the scenes of one of the most notorious heists in history\, revealing the untold story of art theft\, from conception of the crime to recovery of a masterpiece. \n\n\n\nAdmission is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:School of Business Faculty Research Seminar
DESCRIPTION:For the first fall faculty research seminar\, Xiaodong Zhang\, a visiting scholar\, will be presenting his research on political career concerns and firm-level credit rationing. The seminar will take place in CH203 and via Zoom. All comments and feedback are welcome. His talk will be offered both in person and online. Please find the presentation topics below.  \n\n\n\nZoom Meeting ID: 923 2657 7294Passcode: 539642 \n\n\n\nTitle: Political Career Concerns and Firm-Level Credit Rationing: Evidence from Chinese Cities \n\n\n\nAbstract: Efficient credit allocation is central to private-sector growth\, yet political incentives often redirect financial resources. Using China’s cadre promotion system\, we show that mayors eligible for promotion expand infrastructure investment through bank-financed debt\, raising local government liabilities by 13% of GDP. This debt expansion crowds out private firms\, reducing their credit access\, investment\, employment\, and productivity. The distortion is weaker for state-owned and infrastructure-related firms\, highlighting unequal access to finance. Our findings reveal how career concerns of local officials translate into financial repression\, offering new evidence on the institutional origins of capital misallocation in developing economies.

SUMMARY:Economics Seminar: Mehedi Hasan Oni
DESCRIPTION:Department of Economics hosts our first Department Seminar this Fall. Our new colleague\, Oni\, will introduce us to his work. See the link for his draft. \n\n\n\nTime and place: Thursday\, Oct 2\, 12-1:15 pm\, JC 118 \n\n\n\nTitle: Commuting\, Home Utilities\, and Production: The Distributional Effects of Energy Price Shocks \n\n\n\nAbstract: Energy price shocks are large and persistent relative to other price shocks. How do these shocks affect households across income groups? To quantify the welfare effects of energy price shocks\, I develop a heterogeneous-agent incomplete market model featuring non-homothetic consumption preferences\, commuting costs\, and energy as a factor of production for non-energy goods\, taking the energy price as exogenous. A calibrated version of the model successfully reproduces many salient features of United States data\, including the cross-sectional distributions of employment\, income\, wealth\, and expenditure shares on energy consumption for both commuting and residential utilities. Quantitatively\, I find that a positive energy price shock similar to the one in 2021 results in disproportionate welfare losses across income groups\, with the bottom quintile losing almost twice as much as the top quintile in terms of consumption on impact. While the shock’s direct impact on consumption dominates for low-income households\, high-income households are mainly affected through changes in wage and rental rate. I also show that between work-from-home and targeted transfers\, the former boosts welfare but widens consumption inequality\, while the latter does the opposite.
