SUMMARY:¡Fiesta!: Latine Heritage Month Kickoff
DESCRIPTION:Latine/Latinx Heritage Month\, observed from September 15 to October 15\, is a national celebration of the histories\, cultures\, and contributions of Latine/Latinx people. The observance begins in mid-September as a nod to the anniversaries of national independence for several Latin American countries\, including Costa Rica\, El Salvador\, Guatemala\, Honduras\, Nicaragua\, Mexico\, and Chile. It is a time for community\, celebration\, and recognition among our Latine community members. Their achievements\, contributions\, and efforts offer inspiration to others in honoring their heritage\, cultures\, and experiences. We hope that you engage in our Latine/Latinx Heritage Month programs to gather\, honor\, and learn as we observe the month at Clark University\, beginning with our kick-off event\, ¡Fiesta! \n\n\n\nJoin us for a taste of Latin food\, music\, dance\, and culture. We welcome all students\, faculty\, staff\, and alumni to join us in celebration.

SUMMARY:Biology Fall 2025 Seminar Series Speaker - Alex Bradshaw\, Clark University
DESCRIPTION:Alexander Bradshaw is a mycologist with experience in microbiology\, including work with bacterial and fungal specimens. He values biodiversity in all forms but has a strong passion for Fungi. His past and current research has primarily focused on systematics and evolution of the genus of “Magic mushrooms” Psilocybe\, which produce psychoactive compounds with high therapeutic potential for the treatment of myriad mental health issues. However\, more broadly\, Alex is interested in exploring the complexity and evolution of fungal secondary metabolites\, which have been utilized by humans throughout history for food\, medicine\, and in reclaiming polluted environments. Embracing the breadth of biological and chemical diversity that Fungi exhibit is paramount to understanding their role in nature\, how they shape the environment around them\, and how they influence the organisms the interact with.Another unexplored realm of mycology is the functional development of morphology\, such as how a mushroom is produced. For his post-doctoral research\, Alex is working in the lab of Dr. David Hibbett and Dr. Javier Tabima\, where he is studying the systematics\, functional genetics\, and population structures of the gilled\, and sometimes secotioid\, polypore mushroom\, Lentinus tigrinus.

SUMMARY:The Constitution in Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Professor Aziz Rana will deliver the Constitution Day Lecture\, addressing the question: “What is the relationship between the constitutional system and today’s democratic backsliding\, including with respect to basic civil liberties?” The talk will explore the strengths and weaknesses of the Constitution\, highlighting its role in current legal crises as well as the costs of our still pervasive culture of constitutional veneration. \n\n\n\nProfessor Rana’s research and teaching center on American constitutional law and political development. His first book\, The Two Faces of American Freedom (Harvard University Press)\, situates the American experience within the global history of colonialism\, examining the intertwined relationship in American constitutional practice between internal accounts of freedom and external projects of power and expansion. His latest book\, The Constitutional Bind: How Americans Came to Idolize a Document that Fails Them (University of Chicago Press\, 2024)\, explores the modern emergence of constitutional veneration in the twentieth century — especially against the backdrop of growing American global authority — and how veneration has influenced the boundaries of popular politics. \n\n\n\nA prolific scholar and public intellectual\, Professor Rana is the author of numerous articles essays and op-eds for such venues such as The University of Chicago Law Review\, California Law Review\, UCLA Law Review\, Texas Law Review\, the Yale Law Journal Forum\, n+1\, Dissent\, The Boston Review\, The Washington Post\, The New York Times\,  New Labor Forum\, Jacobin\, The Guardian\, The Chronicle of Higher Education\, The Nation\, Jadaliyya\, Salon\, and The Law and Political Economy Blog.  \n\n\n\nDr. Rana received his A.B. from Harvard College summa cum laude and a J.D. from Yale Law School. He also earned a Ph.D. in political science at Harvard University\, where his dissertation was awarded the University’s Charles Sumner Prize. \n\n\n\nRefreshments will be served\, and the event is open to the public. \n\n\n\nSponsored by the Provost’s Office and the Political Science Department through the Francis A. Harrington Public Affairs Fund
